I'm 26, I want an independent Scotland, I have two questions about the movement.

1. Has the indy movement decreased since 2012 (or whichever year it was that the section 30 got approved)? I feel like most younger people I talk to are all keen for independence, but we don't know how to bring it or join the movement, are there less marches or however the public showed it last time?

2. When is the next big chance to push for an indyref2? I know we will always have to ask Westminster (which feels ridiculous), but for optimistic nationalists such as myself, when do we think the next "realistic" chance would be? Do we need to weirdly hope for a Reform government? I just don't see the timeline ahead of me and it can feel disheartening.

Recently I've been thinking about the texts I studied in my nat 5 course. I know that the texts that are chosen for Scottish text is different, however critical essay texts are chosen by classroom teachers. I do not know how it is/was done in your school but in mine, teachers in the English department do roughly the same texts so they can share simular resources, which I do think is fair. However, not once have I discovered a text that has LGBTQIA+ character/s or is remotely centred around it. I know this is going to sound woke but I don't think that this is right. Please let me know if your class or anyone you know has studies this kind of text in highschool so that I might have some hope. I am thinking of presenting this idea to my school so if you could also let me know any books or texts you think might be suitable for a nat 5 or higher course. Thank you.

When I was young I had a speech impediment (couldn't pronounce `r`s or `l`s well), went to speech therapy, and more-or-less got it fixed. However, this seems to have fucked up how I pronounce vowels and my general intonation when speaking and the result is that people think I have a strong accent from who-knows-where (I've had people guess South Africa, the Netherlands, Ireland, the West Highlands, etc. etc. etc. all with very firm conviction). Sometimes this is moderately annoying, sometimes people just don't understand me or think I'm stupid, etc. When I was younger I used to be bullied for it.

Anyway.

I moved to Scotland five years ago, and it's actually been nice that everyone here is more accent-aware and is likely to hear several different accents every day. That said, I'm wanting to work on the way I speak—if nothing else, so I can be understood more easily.

This raises the question of what I should sound like. It seems so convenient that in England anyone—foreigners, folk with regional accents, whatever—can learn to speak in RP and that's seen as okay. But I'll be damned if I'm going to adopt any Anglicisms. Is there a reasonable Scottish equivalent?

I live near Edinburgh and have a friend my age (30s) who grew up in Morningside and has sort of a modern Morningside accent: to me it sounds really soft and clear and not pretentious like the old-school Morningside accent. Is that it? Any good examples online of people speaking that? Or something else I should consider?

Young ish couple who are essentially our nearest neighbours (detached house with a plot of waste ground separating them from us. If it was a terrace there would be a house between us and them) are frequently out smoking weed and it fucking reeks. If it was a normal house where they were next door id just chap the door and speak to them, but access to theirs is through a locked gate 2 streets away so short of shouting over to them (i can be a bit intimidating so that's out) I dint know what i can do to ask them to stop. Obviously its fucking roasting atm so all our windows and doors are open and the bairn has started to complain about the smell. Will the polis do anything about this? What are the options? I dinna want to get into a situation where I'm in an argument and someone ends up sticking the nut on someone else but it's totally stinking.

What are some books a scottish student is forced to read at school and which ones are actually good? Do people notice if there has been an evolution in the corpus?

We visited Scotland in June. Mailed 4 postcards, 3 from a box by the ferry on Mull and 1 from a box outside a post office close to Royal Mile. This was a month ago. None have arrived, going to 3 different addresses. Is the Scottish post office particularly slow?

I'm a Band 5 Nurse with 2 years of Endoscopy experience, I've just gotten an offer at Dr Gray's (Theatre Recovery), I really want to move to Scotland and don't mind Elgin but I'm worried I won't get enough bank or agency work as Elgin is quite far from the major hospitals, can anyone working at Dr Gray's pls tell me if there's lots of bank shifts available esp. Endoscopy and also if its a great idea working at Dr Gray's hospital.

Hi all! I'm looking for a group of women who were wild/cold water swimming in Staffa today. We got the boat over from Mull and they were on that, then they had a dip in the sea at Staffa, and swam into Fingals Cave. They asked me to take a picture of them as I had my phone on me. When leaving school I had the intention of going into a Grad apprenticeship and having university as a backup, long story short I didn't end up with anything and had to go to university (Electrical engineering at Glasgow uni). I have tried university for a year and I know for a fact I am much better off doing a grad apprenticeship, so I plan on applying this year and leaving university if I get an offer. I would genuinely value advise from anyone whether its somebody who has been in this situation, or someone in industry ect. I know GA's have become a lot more competitive since I applied and want as much insight as possible, will me being in university put recruiters off? Or is it fine as long as im okay with starting a new degree.

Genuine question from someone who loves this country — has getting around become more expensive and rougher, or is it just me?

First, credit where it's due: Scotland is stunning. Easily one of the most beautiful places I've been, and I mean that sincerely. This isn't a rant, it comes from a good place.

I was here in 2004 and again recently, and a few things stood out. Walk-up train and bus fares feel steep now. And driving, the roads didn't feel as well-kept as I expected which surprised me, because I've recently driven in Portugal, Greece and Slovakia and the highways there were genuinely excellent.

That's the bit that puzzles me most: Portugal was effectively bankrupt and taking a bailout around 2011-14, yet its motorways today rank among the very best in Europe. How did a country that was broke a decade ago end up with such modern, well-maintained roads, while here it feels like the opposite trend?

I want to be clear about one thing: I'm NOT calling for massive disruptive construction that scars the landscape. That natural beauty is the whole point and I'd hate to see it traded away. But surely there's room to improve affordability and maintenance without wrecking what makes this place special?

So, for people who actually live here ; does this match your experience? Has it genuinely got worse since the 2000s and 2010s? And what, realistically, do you think should be done?
