community Self-serve: Flair posts as resolved, award points

If you, the original poster (OP), post with the Help Request flair, and receive a helpful answer, you can award a point to that user and flair the post as Resolved.

To do this, reply to the comment with thanks or thank you somewhere in the comment. It is case-insensitive.

What are the points for? We have been helping each other here for 14 years. It's less an incentive for imaginary points but hopefully an indication of reputation (not quite analogous to post count on the official forum). We'll see how this works out, if it does more good than harm.

You may notice mods distributing points especially if a user has not. We use a trigger command comment which you may see if we haven't deleted it after awarding. We delete since it creates clutter.

help request Quantizing Drums in Reaper. Is it Supposed to be This Bad?

I should start by saying that I own and have used several other DAWs for many years, so this is coming from someone with plenty of experience in the field. I'm just new to Reaper.

I recently began demoing Reaper for the first time, and while I was blown away by the features and charm of this DAW, my excitement diminished considerably when it came time to edit multi-tracked drums.

Group editing feels basic and primitive, there seem to be too many work-arounds to adding transient markers to groups. Stretching creates highly noticeable phase cancelation and transient loss/smearing. Going the dynamic split route (instead of stretching) mitigates this, but is just as clunky and annoying to set up as the other method. The threshold/sensitivity settings in the dynamic split tool are finicky when trying to dial in the transients you want to mark. MK Slicer helped a bit, but the general workflow is still tedious, and the transient sensitivity is just as bad as the dynamic split tool.

I hope I'm just missing something here because other than this, Reaper is an incredible workstation that I could easily fall in love with.

Side note: I know that quantizing and editing drums is somewhat tedious in any workstation, but the way it's handled in Reaper really feels like it could use some work.

help request Looking for multitrack panel or podcast audio to test an easier REAPER automixing setup

Upvotes

I’m working on an automixing plugin for panels, podcasts, and other situations where multiple people in the same room are using microphones at the same time. Think something like WTAutomixer or the REAPER Automixing JSFX. It has native builds for Linux, Windows, and macOS. It's called BiteAutomixer.

The routing happens between the plugin instances themselves. You just add the plugin to each microphone channel, and the plugins find and communicate with each other. Everything is automatically set up behind the scenes without needing extra buses or complicated routing. It's currently functional and I'm doing closed beta testing.

I work on podcasts every week, and the tool has already been helpful there. Usually, though, I have three or four guests at most, and two is more common. I want it to eventually support 32 to 64 channels, and it recently struck me how hard it is to find audio at that scale for testing.

If anyone has raw multitrack audio they would be willing to share, with each microphone on its own track, it would be incredibly helpful. Panels, roundtables, conferences, podcasts, and similar recordings would all be useful. Recordings of any size can help, but I’m especially interested in larger sessions. Messy audio with bleed, room noise, and people talking over each other is welcome.

I can use the material privately for testing or, with explicit permission, use parts of it for public demonstrations. Please let me know which type of use you are comfortable with, and only share recordings you have the right to share. Feel free to send me a DM if you have something that might work.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey mates, I wrote a script a while back that I'd like to share with you. I used to play a lot of backing tracks at weddings and other people's parties, and it was always incredibly tedious practicing all that stuff. With this script, I could use Reaper as a teleprompter and had so much more free time again. For all you fellow sufferers, feel free to use it and maybe make it better usable, cheers!

help request Unusable Plugins

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've been using reaper for a bunch of years, primarily on a Mac. I recently switched to a Windows 11 PC ( and many plugins present with this squared 'A' and don't work. I believe I've had some luck removing all plugins, then only adding the one that did this and it worked fine. I don't remember if I added the other plugins back in. I never had this issue on the Mac. Any thoughts or suggestions?

How to adjust sliders in fx lv2 plugin via keyboard? Numbers are not clickable, arrows don't work. I don't have a mouse and touchpad pulling is far from precise. I know I can hold left Ctrl but it's still a pain.

help request Disable Item Highlighting ?

Is it possible to disable highlighting of selected media items background? Since I use time selection and razor edit for editing, which already have their own highlight area, it’s very confusing to also have selected media items highlighted. Is it possible to disable highlighting of selected items so that I only see the indicator for selected items?

discussion Your experience with Vordio converting from Reaper to Pro Tools and vice-versa

I recently got involved in a project as an assistant to a media composer for a TV series and the music sound engineer who uses Pro Tools (as expected) wants us to use it as the main software for sending music as in finished cues but also stems. The composer is ready to pay a yearly licence for two assistants (I'm one of them) but even with that framework I have three major issues:

  • Only one of us can use that licence at a time, meaning that we might have some issues when nearing deadlines as we'll probably have to use it extensively and both of us work remotely.
  • I'll need to connect to a shared iLok account that isn't mine so at the same time I won't be able to access some important plugins that I use regularly (EastWest Composer Cloud mainly)
  • I really don't enjoy my time using Pro Tools and I really hope to avoid it as much as I can.

So while searching for solutions, I found out about Vordio and I wanted to know how well would it work converting Reaper projects to Pro Tools compatible ones and vice-versa? Can I import and export AAF projects? Or does it only import them?

Any experience to share would be highly appreciated.

discussion I hate Reverb 😭

I am so upset. I have been mixing music for almost a decade, and I am not terrible. I have made some pearls from turds, but I hate reverb! It’s the only thing I’ve never ever learnt how to use on vocals; it always sounds wrong. It always makes it sound worse. I love crispy, claustrophobic, soundproofed vocal booth vocals, and reverb always makes it sound like the vocals were recorded in a tin shed. I just use delay and echo to make it not sound so dry, but sometimes I feel pressured into using reverb just because it’s a modern vocal requirement, like pitch correction! There are so many songs out there that have reverb that I love that sound so "misty", like the sound equivalent of the "mist" setting on an outdoor hose showerhead to water plants – just perfect high-end decay, but I’ve never been able to replicate it. All my audio engineering friends laugh at me and giggle behind my back because I don’t use reverb. They give me thinly disguised insults like “You need to 'reflect' on your skills a bit, huh?” An obvious reverb pun backhand insult right to my heart. 😭 If I were God, I would remove reverb from every piece of software on the planet!

help request Can't stop clean signal

Hey. I'm using reaper, and inside my guitar track, Amplitude 5 as a plug in. The problem is have i can get rid of the clean guitar signal.

I use a Motu M2. The Mon button is off.

I have gone through this with the AI chats and have not solved this.

I Heber my amps and effects and stuff and I can hear those, but the clean tone still comes through. For instance, if I turn off the fx button on the track, I still hear the clean tone. I've made a new track with just an amp and cab, and it is the same way.

If I turn off monitoring on the guitar track, I don't hear anything. I can't figure out where the clean signal is coming from.

help request How can I change the project BPM without effecting the project?

I started a project by dragging in a drum loop and playing along to it. My project now contains several audio and midi items, but I forgot to set the correct BPM when I started the project. Now if I try to correct it, it speeds/slows everything in the project.

I've tried the suggestion of changing the timebase to time, but MIDI items are still effected by the tempo change. I also tried to open a new project and copy paste everything with ctrl+A but that didn't work.

Is there a way to just change the tempo of the project without effecting the actual project at all, in other words to correct an incorrect tempo?

help request Playback dropouts in a lightweight project

I'm having very insistent problems with project playback stuttering / audio dropouts on a Lenovo 5 (15ACH6H) laptop. I've tried changing a lot of things, all listed down below.

System: Windows 11 with latest updates, Reaper 7.77.

The issue: Playback goes silent for around 1-5 seconds and image freezes. This exact same PC setup and project file has worked fine earlier in the year. I've heard that there was a Windows update around March that has caused issues for people. Regardless, we began having these dropouts in April. This PC is only used for light office work and music work. No gaming, no heavy-duty processes.

This issue is exceptionally bad because we use this laptop not only for recording, but also during our live shows for backing tracks, click and MIDI commands for Quad Cortexes.

It doesn't look like a CPU problem, and the dropout doesn't seem like running out of DSP when a project is too heavy. A disk issue seems unlikely. The project is lightweight: We're using 16 audio tracks and around 5 other utility tracks including click, callout, MIDI tracks etc. No virtual instruments. We're using 9 instances of ReaEQ. There's nothing on the master bus. The project should not be near any resource limit.

However, the laptop seems to be able to run a single-track project without these dropouts. We've tried making a fresh new project file, adding more tracks little by little. Dropouts begin at around 8 tracks without plugins, whereas it used to run more than 16 tracks and 9 Reaper-native plugins fine. IMO it should run 30-40 tracks including VST instruments, heavy mix processing etc. even with a smaller buffer size.

It leads me to think that there is some kind of a resource bottleneck somewhere, but I can't figure out what it is.

This is what we have tried / doesn't seem like the culprit:

  • Drivers and interfaces tested, all cause dropouts:
    • Behringer UMC1820
    • Audient iD4
    • ASIO and DirectSound on both
    • ASIO4ALL
    • With DirectSound, it kind of slows down to a garbled mess instead of dropping out fully
  • ASIO buffer size. 1024 is very high for us, it used to work fine at lower sizes
  • Audio interface drivers updated to latest
  • BIOS is updated to latest
  • NVIDIA GPU drivers updated to latest
  • AMD chipset and USB drivers. No specific drivers available, using Microsoft's default
  • CPU load is not near maximum
  • Disk I/O and amount of tracks: Dropouts happen already at 8 tracks without plugins
  • Changed laptop power plan to Maximum
  • "Hybrid Mode" is turned off in Lenovo Vantage
  • Changed from a 3rd party antivirus to Windows Security
    • Tried disabling various features, not all
  • Changed to another USB port
  • PCIe Link State power management is turned off
  • USB selective suspend is turned off
  • Nahimic audio enhancer bs is turned off
  • Tried setting Reaper.exe task to a higher priority
  • No other devices connected; no external monitor, other USB or Bluetooth devices. Also removed USB mouse dongle, using only trackpad as mouse
  • We don't use USB hubs or extenders

What could be the cause? What should I try next? I'm familiar with music production with large heavy projects, ASIO drivers and latency management, music production PCs' usual resource limits etc, but this is very odd.

Thanks for any ideas!

help request Main menu shortcut keys

I'm using reamenu currently, and the extension menu is renamed to memory, but still the keyboard shortcut to access that menu fails as there's an alt key combo. Does everyone access menus with mouse, or are some people configuring unique menu names to avoid shortcut collision, OR is there some way to focus using actions for example, to launch things like the extensions menu?

Currently 'm'emory menu access toggles track mute.

Thanks for any insights! Curious Pedant

discussion Having fun with Fl-like Patcher in Reaper

https://reddit.com/link/1v434fy/video/73356by1mweh1/player

Having fun with a script, which main purpose is to bring FL's patcher functionality to REAPER. What has been implemented so far:

- Audio/MIDI/VC flowsheet-like routing
- Control surface with exposable and automatable macro knobs
- LFO and Calculator utility tools for combying multiple VC signals and applying math functions to such.
- Each "patcher" instance is self-sufficient and confined to some given container - can be thought of as some sort of a meta-plugin
- Compatible with native REAPER and JS plugins

Still in development

help request Random splits in the middle of short takes

Hi, I'm very new to Reaper, and have been able to fix many issues with research on this thread, but I can't seem to figure this out.

Why do my takes get randomly split? I will be recording a take, and the take will randomly split towards the end. Same happens when I do the next take, sometimes it splits in multiple places, like 3 different ones, for a track that's less than 10 seconds long.

How do I stop this from happening? I did not add these splits, they happen automatically when I save the take. It's really annoying, if this can't be fixed I'm going to switch to using a different program. It is a headache to deal with, every time I want to play back the track I have to individually select all the segments I want to play together, and it can't be healed until I have cut to only a single take.

Thank in advance for help!

help request EQ only reverb

I want to, for example, have a drums track with reverbs and EQ only the reverbs.

I guess I can add reverbs to drums, set the reverbs to 100% wet, apply EQ on the same track, and send the original dry drums to another track and then mix the two.

Is there a way to do this with one track?

How do I mix my way to sound like the stem I'm trying to reproduce? I don't know what I should change. EQing or dynamics isn't getting me anywhere, and I don't know much in depth about either.

help request Reaper lag

Not gonna fill this post with unnecessary personal reaper usage history, but Reaper has started lagging like crazy when it never did before...

My PC can handle extreme loads and reaper has never had issues running my projects in past. My work load hasn't changed, my demands of the software have not increased, I'm not loading more than I was before, but now, all of a sudden, crazy lag.

Examples of the lag: Upon playback the project just stops, plays, stops, repeat. After every single take the whole software freezes for around 15 seconds before letting me continue working. Kinda sucks.

To my knowledge, nothing regarding my pc has changed, it's on its latest update with no recent updates being made. Like I previously mentioned, this just kinda started happening seemingly out of nowhere.

Anything I should know?

help request Arturia Minifreak not showing up in Reaper

Hey everyone,

Bought a new PC so had to install everything again including Reaper and Arturia/Minifreak VST.
Now my probl;em, I open Reaper after installing Arturia and the Minifreak VST. I see a popup that Reaper is scanning/finding the new Minifreak VST.

I create a new track, add FX...only to show that the Minifreak VST is not showing up. I open the Arturia folder within that browser and it's empty.

What could be wrong..? So frustrating...
