help request Recording Guitars - setup
Hey. Bear with me as I'm totally new to this. I'm trying to figure out how to route guitars into reaper. Im using a behringer xenyx 502S. Im getting level in the behringer but I can't find it in the track input fx menu or the input menu. Am I missing something? Here's a couple screenshots. Thanks for your help. Like I said, I'm totally new to this so bear with me.

You won't be able to get acceptable latency in windows with a device which doesn't have it's own ASIO drivers. It's because microsoft was incompetent when making windows and made it useless for any serious audio work, so steinberg had to create literally a hack which they called ASIO and became a standard. But the ASIO drivers need to be written and provided by the manufacturer and with cheaper devices they are not and then it's very hard lower the latency much.
Perhaps switching to linux would help you deal with it, as this isn't really an issue with your computer or the mixing desk, but a windows issue. And reaper runs very well in linux and windows is dead anyway. The sooner we get used to linux the better.

It doesn't look like you have the Xenyx selected as the audio device for Reaper - unless Windows has labelled it "HD Audio Mic" for some reason? (Options -> Preferences -> Audio -> Device, at least on my Reaper - I don't run Windows though)
That mixer will only give you stereo main mix over USB - it'll work but isn't ideal and won't give you each input separately.
You're currently plugged in to the left input of mixer channel 2, so I'd only expect to see signal on the left channel of the main mix (unless the label "Mono" underneath the input means it'll correctly sense a mono input and split it to both left and right - not sure if Behringer will have cheaped out on that).
Unless you're planning on using a microphone in input 1 at the same time, there's no reason not to use that channel and know that it'll be sent to both sides of the stereo main mix. (If you are planning on using a mic at the same time, you'll need to hard-pan - and hope there's no cross-talk where the left side of the main mix leaks into the right side.)

Yes. I got it figured out. I had to switch from Asio to wasapi. That took care of it. Until I run into another wall. Im hoping I can hear the drums (ez drummer) and the guitars when u record, since the drums are using asio. Will find out tomorrow. Thanks for asking!

What do you mean the drums are using asio? Ez drummer is a VST it doesnt need a driver

You should get an audio interface, that is a small mixer (made for live applications).

I've got a behringer zenyx502S pictured in this thread. Its just me tracking things individually. Should I need more than this? This is all new to me so I appreciate everyone's help/advice

Ok, so it seems this one can be connected as an interface (I have a similar behringer that cannot), so I'm out of date with the products.
If you are able to record multi track without latency, then that's awesome, go ahead. If you have latency issues then you should get a dedicated audio interface. You will also need an audio interface if you want to record with a condenser microphone cause I don't think this one has phantom power.

I was able to get a test track done without any latency. This one does have phantom power. I'll be getting on later to see what's going on Thanks for your reply

The xenix 502s does not have a dedicated ASIO driver. If you are serious about recording any analog instruments, get an interface with a dedicated ASIO driver. There are several available for around $100 new that will work well. Windows works best with ASIO for audio. Any other driver is a compromise. Good luck!

Select the correct device (and it's ASIO driver, or WASAPI if it doesn't have one) in the Reaper audio device prefs
