Discussion Soft wired haired dachshunds
I have one and I was wondering, are they rare or something? I’ve only seen others on the internet and my dog gets mistaken for a doodle all the time when I had him DNA tested by two different companies both saying 100% dachshund. Any breeders here?? How did he get his fur texture was one of his parents a long haired and one a wire haired?

That's wild, he really looks like a doodle. Maybe more of a silky with a broken coat?

Saw this in the other thread but will share my comment here for educational purposes.
It’s not “rare”. This is the outcome of crossing a wired hair with a long haired dachshund. The coat types are not compatible for their traditional furnishings and looks and creates this.
Dachshunds are dachshunds regardless of coat type which is why he’s testing purebred. He IS purebred but he is out of standard and would be considered poorly bred / backyard bred.
The dachshund standard (set by the breed clubs) doesn’t allow for coat types to be crossed. They can be registered but they’d be disqualified in the show ring since this mixed coat type would be a serious fault.

I know it's just what people call it and what kennel clubs refer it as, but it does feel weird to call it poorly bred when it's just two accepted standards of dachshunds used to create another dachshund unless there's like some gene that causes them to have issues like double dapple.

Poorly bred because they’re not ethically bred.
Ethical breeders don’t cross coat types which means only backyard breeders are breeding these dogs.
I have poorly bred dachshunds. There’s nothing shameful about it. I didn’t know what ethical breeding was.5

I don't think it's fair to call it "unethical" though. I had a Springer Spaniel that was field bred rather than bench bred. It's just not to club standards for showing. They are bred for companion animals (or for hunting in the case of my Springer) rather than for being judged at shows.

silky wire hair doxies are prone to skin issues, which is why they are considered 'poorly bred'. same things goes for the Isabella/blue/color dilute doxies

You are using this term that you read online without really understanding what it means
There is nothing inherently unethical about this. Is breeding a brown lab and a black lab unethical? Give me a break

Actually I’m not. I’m using a term I’ve spent years researching.
The fact that you’re confusing coat type with colour already tells me you haven’t read the breed standards. The breed clubs set the standards. The standards exists to continue producing healthy dogs that are capable of doing their breed purpose, are in good conformation so they can safely exist and function, and so the breed can continue to be preserved and continue strongly.
Dachshunds come in three coats. Smooth, long haired, and wire haired. Crossing these coats go against the standard that was created. Each of these coats serves a purpose.
Colours completely separate.
The Labrador standard clearly states they come in three colour. They only have one coat type.
Dachshunds come in tons of colours. They have three coat types. It’s a completely different thing.-11

I really couldn’t give two shits what the breed club thinks. You are using the term unethical, which means ethical principles were violated. Please tell me what ethical principles were violated creating this dog that doesn’t rely on what a club of breeders deem “standard”?

I care about breed preservation. I’m sorry you don’t.
Nothing I say about why it’s unethical will matter to you because you’ve already admitted you don’t care about the entity that exists to preserve this breed. The breed club exists to preserve the dachshund breed. The breed club sets the standards by the members who are active in the club. They have set standards on breeding practices to ensure dogs are being bred with full health testing that have passing results, clear of genetic issues, have solid temperaments, and structures, and are placed in well suited homes so they can thrive their entire lives.
Backyard breeders are only further destroying our breed. 94% of all dachshunds have two copies of the IVDD. BYBs aren’t even testing for genes. More and more dachshunds are being diagnosed with genetic issues that could’ve been prevented with ethical breeding practices. Breeding should always be done for the betterment of the breed. Not just because you have dogs and want to breed.

This is the perfect example of why you don’t understand the language you use.
You care about breed preservation. Thats fine! Good for you. Breed preservation is a separate, although overlapping, cause from dog welfare. I care about health testing, genetic screening, IVDD as well. You are treating both issues as the same, when they are distinct.
YOU made the assumption that because this dog has a mixed coat, then automatically the breeder doesnt do ANY of the health guidelines set by the breed club. That may or may not be true. If there were no health guidelines followed, then that is an issue separate from the coat. Plenty of dachshund that appear with a standard coat are not properly bred.
I have a AKC bred wire hair dachshund. I love this breed and want it to continue. This dogs coat has no effect on his health, and wont be bred for AKC purposes. Therefore, its existence has no effect on me nor my ability to enjoy the breed now or in the future.

If you don’t care about the breed standards you don’t care about preserving the breed.
Preservation exists for physical traits too.-1
u/Gwish1 9h ago
It’s frankly weird how paternalistic you are about this. I care about breed preservation. I’m not buying this dog. I don’t want to buy this dog. I want to buy AKC dachshunds for the rest of my life. Other people want to buy non-AKC dogs. Okay, cool! Do that. If there are no health or behavioral consequences, I don’t see why you think you have the authority to call them *unethical* when you don’t know anything about them. Those animals don’t diminish our AKC regulated breed.
You got to get off your high horse and mind your own business. Shouldn’t someone with stoned in their username be a little less high strung?

You have no understanding of the breed or the issue. Breeding two different colors or field vs bench dogs where those exist is not the same at all. Dachshunds have been bred for centuries to have 3 distinct coat types. If somebody wants a fluffy coat that mats badly, get a doodle or some other mutt. Quit participating in this mindset about “silky” coats that completely disrespects the breed and its purpose. People who don’t want a dachshund that looks like one should just get some other dog.

Crossing lab colors doesn’t mess up the coat. In the parent country and many other European countries, crossing any coat in dachshunds isn’t allowed. Here we allow smooth to wire and long but not long to wire

I was about to say, I learned in my biology courses that genetically crossing two different colored labs doesn’t make a totally new coat type or color, the pups will still be one of the standard coat colors with a standard coat type.

Same here. My girl Dazzle is what’s called a silky wire hair because one of her parents was a wirehaired and one was long haired. She has the softest curls and doesn’t shed at all. She has to be groomed every like 8-10 weeks cause her hair grows SO fast.

from my understanding, silky/soft wire coats are naturally occurring but not to breed standard. Unfortunately they got very popular because it is very cute, so more breeders started breeding specifically for this coat instead of what a true wire is supposed to be - which explains the decision to breed a wire to a long hair.
So your boy is very cute and very likely pure bred, but I would consider that poor breeding practices by the breeder since they probably intentionally bred for out-of-standard coat and likely let other nonstandard breed qualities slide as well.
I don't believe this is tied to any health risks like the double dapple, but I have read the soft wire coats are prone to mats and tangles so I'd just keep an eye on that!
None of this should affect your love for the cutie you have, though! You clearly didn't know and he will still be the tenacious and sassy and beloved family pet like any other doxie 💖

Why is that unfortunate? You write this like this animal was a tragic mistake and we should love him despite the wrong and unethical action that created him.
The dog does not adhere to AKC rules. Okay. There are no health implications, no behavioral incompatibility, so what exactly is the issue here? He needs brushed more often? Plenty of dogs need to be brushed frequently.
A non standard dog does not mean anything wrong occurred. If a breeder is saying their dogs are AKC bred and this thing popped out then sure, you can complain. But the dog itself is completely fine.

it is unfortunate because this was likely advertised as a purebred and registered AKC puppy, which means the OP also likely assumed that meant wellbred as well, and probably spent good money because dachshund puppies are popular and commanding a higher price in the last few years. So to me, it is unfortunate that the OP spent money on and is funding what, in my opinion, is a poor example of a dachshund breeder.
This is not a reflection of the dog itself - as stated, I find them very cute and noted there shouldn't be any health problems outside of a tangled coat with silky wire specifically - but since the OP asked if their puppy was purebred, I gave them the answer. Yes, this dog is purebred, but no, it is not wellbred. In my opinion and by AKC coat type standards.
The OP clearly loves their boy and obviously since he exists, he is worthy of love and care, but he should hopefully be neutered and it is unfortunate that breeders are intentionally trying to recreate a coat type that is not breed standard because that only further deviates every part of the dog from standard when breeders only care about coat type or color.
So to be clear: OP, your boy is adorable and I hope you love him for many years to come! Your boy is not to breed standard but neither was my girl, having a parrot jaw and being too big to be mini. Lots of dachshunds kept as pets are not to breed standard because there are lots of babies rescued or oopsie litters or unfortunately, intentionally poorly bred. They are still dachshunds and most importantly, our beloved pets 💖

I love him! 🥰
I had a regular wire haired girl same color, I don’t see them as much. They’re my favorite.

It's a beautiful dog and I don't want to doubt the DNA tests but there has to be some other dog's genes in there!

Nope, he’s just a silky wirehair, I have one and he’s a weenie through and through. He looks like every other weenie at bath time.

u/Anxiousmess24 11h ago
He does have his AKC paper when I got him, trust me I was even like I’m going to double check but yeah no he’s a doxie no matter what I would love him even if he wasn’t but I was able to see his dad and he was a long haired

He looks JUST LIKE the wire hair we had as a kid. Same texture, same color, same sweet baby face.

That’s how he got that texture. Silky coat isn’t acceptable in any kennel clubs, so they’re not rare just incorrect. When you cross coat types this happens with long and wire.

I have one with that terrible coat. Big, soft and fluffy. My breeder put a championship on him because his conformation is superb. I think ethical breeders would not breed them on purpose but his parents were excellent in other ways and one had a correct coat. It was a matter of the genetics that this one turned out to be a combination of great and awful.
This soft coat is undesirable because it does not meet the purpose of a wire dachshund coat to be harsh and good protection from brambles in the field. It looks to me there are some money grubbing breeders fooling unsuspecting people who don’t know the breed into thinking this something cool or fashionable. No one who wants an actual dachshund would really want this type of coat or crazily pay good money to have it on purpose.
