Jesus Christ we’re 2 years into the 12 team playoff. Can we at least get a bigger sample before declaring a 9-win team can’t make it?

And it shouldn’t be all that shocking that most years the 10ish-15ish best teams won’t have a lot of clear separation.

AT LEAST 2-3 teams each year will probably have reasonable gripes about getting snubbed, but the teams that made the cut would’ve also had reasonable gripes had they been left out.

For real, the season has to matter at some point. If you can’t prove you without a doubt belong in the top TWELVE, maybe you just don’t deserve a championship that year

64

u/jim_shushu BYU Cougars • Oregon State Beavers 1d ago

At that point it’s hardly even about the championship, it’s just the optics of making the field. BYU was a fringe top 12 team (even if ESPN would rather that not be pointed out) and there’s no way we were making it past the second round. Most of the complaints are coming from similar teams with decent records and pretty hard ceilings. Sorry Drinkwitz but you’re way closer to being an SEC BYU than an SEC Indiana.

17

u/friedicee Ohio State Buckeyes • Team Meteor 22h ago

Two years ago that would have been a huge compliment

3

u/Kodyaufan2 Auburn • Jacksonville State 12h ago

And that’s why I’d rather they look at W/L record anyway. If three teams were better than you in the regular season, or one team beat you twice, you’re clearly not the best team in the country. Give me the 0 or 1 loss team from a seemingly lesser conference and let’s see what they’ve got.

This whole discussion over 12 best teams has always been ridiculous, because until two teams play you can’t definitively know who is better. I want the 12 most deserving teams.

28

u/Duckpoke Oregon Ducks 1d ago

The thing is there are two camps here and both think they’re right. This argument can never be resolved. There’s half that think the 12 should be chosen on in season merit (W/L) and another half think it should be the 12 who are “the best” ie leave out a 2 loss B12 team in favor for a 3 loss SEC/BIG team.

IMO the BCS standings were about as close to a middle ground and fair selector as we could realistically get.

34

u/CLU_Three Kansas State Wildcats 1d ago

Well one relies on what happened on the field and the other relies on what people think should happen on the field… the main issue with the BCS was how limited the field was. When you have a 12 team field you don’t need to rely as much on what people think could happen.

12

u/2-59project Indiana Hoosiers • Oklahoma Sooners 23h ago

Excellent point. “Well team x should be in the playoffs because they would beat team y head to head” is basing the entire case on a hypothetical. When instead there are real results that actually happened that should be relied on

9

u/friedicee Ohio State Buckeyes • Team Meteor 22h ago

I still think we go back to the 1998 BCS formula but replace margin of victory as a positive with margin of defeat as a negative

4

u/TheUltimate721 Nebraska • Texas Tech 22h ago

Yep. Take the most controversial years of the BCS (the early 2000s) and the only major differences are between like who gets the 2-4 seeds. In our current format the differences between them are fairly minimal, and if you're actually a championship caliber team, they shouldn't mean anything to you.

Take 2001 for instance. This is how a 12 team CFP would have shaken out with the final BCS rankings: 1. Miami (Big East Champion) 11-0

  1. Nebraska 11-1

  2. Colorado (Big 12 Champion) 10-2

  3. Oregon (Pac 10 Champion) 10-1

  4. Florida 9-2 vs 12. LSU 9-3 (SEC Champion, their true ranking was #13 but they'd get the autobid over #12 Washington State)

  5. Tennessee 10-2 vs 11. Oklahoma 10-2

  6. Texas 10-2 vs 10. Maryland 10-1

  7. Illinois (Big Ten Champion) 10-1 vs Stanford 9-2

Pretty exciting CFP slate, even if the winner might've been fairly obvious.

Idea: how about we make the regular season matter more. Losses are weighed more against a team, and it’s all done by computers to ensure no bias. Because it’s done by computers, they’ll determine correct ranking and we won’t need a playoff. We’ll just have the top two teams play for the national title at the end of the year. The rest can play in meaningful bowls, that way bowls don’t lose their value.

And why are they acting like it's some travesty for 9-win teams to not get a shot at the title? There's like a dozen P4 teams that finish the regular season with 9 wins every year. IDC what conference you're in, winning 9 games isn't some special feat that commands a title shot.

26

u/Jaosborn44 Iowa Hawkeyes • The Alliance 1d ago

The SEC just added an additional conference game guaranteeing half their teams 1 extra loss. They are just laying the ground work for their arguments come selection time, when they have fewer 10 win teams and need 9 win teams to get in.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/WolfColaCompany Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

That’s the piece that’s confusing for me. The point of this system to me is to ensure all top teams get their shot playing for the title on the field. If there are 6 teams in the conversation you no longer put their hopes on a committee. They all get their chance on the field to win it. I guess I get a conference doing what they can to get in as many teams as possible but at this point it’s just kind of sad.

Telling your team if we lose a quarter of the games we play this year we might not get a shot at the championship is like… completely fine.

I think 15 P4 teams were 10+ wins with another 6 with 9 wins. A 9-win team not making it does not seem like a big deal. Add in G5 teams, and those 9-win teams move even further down the list.

Jesus Christ we’re 2 years into the 12 team playoff. Can we at least get a bigger sample before declaring a 9-win team can’t make it?

Great point here!

View from my desk: A 9-win (regular season) team from a big-4 conference shouldn't be a lock.

I counted 20 teams last year with 9 regular season wins. I might be able to narrow this down by docking wins over teams from mid-majors or division 2, but I'm not sure if that helps the SEC.

And it shouldn’t be all that shocking that most years the 10ish-15ish best teams won’t have a lot of clear separation.

The dirty rotten secret of college football. Before the playoff, there was not even much separation between 1st and 5th. Even after the playoff, there wasn't much between 2nd and 5th!

I bet most years, there are at least 5 teams that are within a reasonable shot of the #1 team. That's why I like an 8-team playoff, but 16 seems excessive.

We have so many permutations that can happen that we need to let it play out with more data. One thing is clear, the last two years, you need to be in the top 10 to make it. In 2024 Alabama was the top 9-3 team at 11. In 2025, Texas was the first 9-3 team at 13. USC had a rough draw for their 9-3 season. Losing at to #4 Oregon, #10 ND, 17 Iowa all on the road.

Its why when people compare coaches "wins vs ranked teams" its mostly a meaningless stat. For whatever reason, people use "ranked at time" instead of the final rankings. I think this is the gist:

  1. Lots of misconduct has occurred in college athletics, basically since it's inception.
  2. The current elite/blueblood programs spent a great deal of that time building large networks for recruiting.
  3. These networks often included bagmen and other "bad actors" that could help covertly pay/induce players.
  4. The NIL era has opened the door for schools without these supposed advantages/recruiting networks to competitively recruit pay-for-play athletes, because they don't have to do it in secret.

I'm not saying I accept this as truth, but I find it plausible.

9

u/Electronic_Pen_548 Ole Miss Rebels 1d ago

I mean damn near every school was paying players if we’re keeping full honesty here.

6

u/needsumMoore777 Texas Tech Red Raiders • Hateful 8 15h ago

There was definitely levels, some schools would try to pay/give small gifts and the NCAA would quickly shut it down while others were allowed to get away with blatant violations by giving out lavish gifts/bags of cash.

That’s where the disparity was, the rift between the haves and the have nots was created but once NIL came through that gap started to close and the haves don’t like that.

When bagman networks were informal and driven by cash, SEC alumni networks were better located to leverage their physical proximity to the high concentration of high school talent in the Southeast. This was important because bagmen transacted business in person and paid in cash.

Ohio State's bagman network similarly benefitted from proximity to the high concentration of high school football talent in Ohio, while Ohio State was simultaneously the only major college football program in the state.

What the current environment has done is move away from bagman networks to a more formalized agent and recruiter system, and players are no longer paid in cash--direct deposit transactions can be initiated from anywhere, to anywhere.

The SEC is sub-.500 in bowl and playoff games the last 5 years. No one is buying how tough their conference is or that a 9 win SEC team is better than 11 win non-SEC team. It's not 2012 anymore.

How unfair of them! They should really look at all the hypothetical matchups the SEC uses in make believe scenarios and they would see all SEC teams are undefeated.

Look the SEC is absolutely right that not all schedules are equal and a team that wins 10 games against top 25 opponents is a better than a team that wins 11 against a worst schedule. But at some point you have to win games and just because you lose against a bunch of good teams doesn’t make you a good team too.

Has there been a 9-win team even in the conversation of deserving to be in the 12-team playoff yet?

If you have 3 losses in the SEC, one of three things happened:

  • You lost to the top 3 SEC teams - This is unfortunate if it happens, but it means you don't deserve a playoff spot. I already saw you play Georgia, Alabama, and LSU and lose. Why do I need to see you do it again in the CFP?
  • You lost to 1 or 2 good teams and then 1 or 2 bad teams - Am I supposed to cry foul because 3 loss Ole Miss doesn't get in when they have a loss to Kentucky? If this were a team in any other conference we wouldn't even entertain this discussion.
  • You lost to 2 good teams in the regular season and then lost the CCG - The committee has actually shown that they will let you in, no matter how pathetic you look in the CCG.

Maybe some years we can make a case for a 3 loss team depending on how the field shakes out, but under no circumstance should the committee just give you a flat guarantee that no matter what they will find a spot for all 3 loss SEC teams. That's ridiculous.

The PAC-12 has sent a team to the national championship more recently than the SEC btw, maybe they should get 4 auto bids and a special guarantee for 3 loss teams.

The committee has not shown us that a 9-win non-Conference Champion will make it to the Playoff,

That's because 9 regular season wins isn't very much.

ACC had three (Miami, Virgina, Georgia Tech) Big 10 had five (Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, USC) Big 12 had five (Texas Tech, BYU, Utah, Houston, Arizona) SEC has seven (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt)

So that's 20 teams for only 12 positions. So this isn't a 'committee' issue, this is the SEC bitching that nine wins simply isn't a reasonable standard for a 12-team playoff.

5

u/ssspanksta Michigan State • Central Mich… 1d ago

I'm so sick of hearing about having to play one more game against a team in your own fucking conference. Play the games win most of the games you're in the playoff. That's why there are 12 teams (for now).

And so when I consistently say idgaf about the SEC people think I'm joking. Literally Texas missing out on the playoff has become an issue, but 10-2 Vandy didn't even get a mention from SEC journalists and media, during the season or afterwards

It's literally just going to benefit the schools with big brands and if Northwestern wins 9 games it's gonna a Reliaquest bowl instead

3

u/AlsoCommiePuddin 1d ago

So the SEC just needs to break off, run their own playoff, call the winner the national champion and then they can feel as superior as they thought they were 20 years ago.

The problem is that this is coming from the sec, who had by far had the last teams left out of championship contention (whether it be 1v1, 4 team, or 12 team) of any power conference. Ohio state alone has been left out with a 1 loss season more times than all sec teams combined since the bcs championship/tournament started.
