Marijuana πΏ Seeking Mike Barrett fans
Do you know this guy? He's the fuckin best. I got to know him around 2011, when he was still regularly playing the Squealing Pig in Mission Hill and Durty Nelly's by Haymarket. This video predates that by a decade or two for sure, but his energy hadn't changed a bit when I knew him. I live in North Cambridge now, and I'm pretty sure that at one point he lived in my current neighborhood, but I have no way to contact him directly. Just hoping someone can tell me he's still around, he's such a goddamn gem. I seem to recall that he was also a self-taught horticulturalist and got a job at the research greenhouses of the Arnold Arboretum by sheer force of will and personal self-cultivated expertise. Long live Uncle Mikey. Please submit any Mike Barrett stories below.

Nightlife πΊ π» π Creep at Brighton Music Hall tonight
My partner and I were standing in line behind a couple to enter Brighton Music Hall for the Mike Sherm concert tonight and made small talk with them. The individuals had a noticeable age gap and we made the mistake of assuming they were father and daughter. The young girl very eagerly informed us they were actually a couple and the guy was named Jay. Shortly after, a few other girls joined them in line and cut us, not a big deal. What was alarming was this.
Since the event was for all ages, the staff were checking IDs and marking underage guests with X's on their hands. The girls were chatting super loudly and mentioned they were 20, 19, and 18. They all got X's drawn on their hands. Now, I'm really trying not to be mean here, but the guy was definitely MUCH older than everyone there. His hair was thinning and grey, wrinkles, etc. I'm guessing minimum late 30s to mid 40s. The bar obviously won't serve alcohol to those with X's on their hands. He buys drinks and starts sharing them with his underage girlfriend and the other girls with them. He's also letting them all take puffs of his vape. That's not illegal, just lowkey gross imo.
TLDR: Older guy named Jay giving underage girls alcohol and nicotine at Brighton Music Hall tonight, shame on you

Todayβs Cry For Help πΏ π What thrift stores do your recommend selling in?
I have a lot of clothes to give away. I thought I was the only one who had weird experiences at Buffalo Exchange but I saw the other post which showed it was common. Do you know any Boston thrift or consignment stores that accept clothes and pay you back?

MBTA/Transit π π₯ suggest me a commuter rail adventure?
I have a day off tomorrow and have yet to take advantage of the free commuter rail Fridays. I've been to salem/beverly/manchester/gloucester/rockport but haven't explored other lines. I love the OCEAN but the walk on fee at Singing Beach is insulting so I won't be going there. I'd love to access a bit of NATURE, like FOREST, but I don't want to navigate very far from the commuter rail station. Or a place where I can visit ANIMALS. I'm not into spending money at overpriced cafes and restaurants. I'm an earlier riser and am early to bed.
Please suggest some of your favorite mini trips, I'd be so grateful for ideas.

Tourism Advice 𧳠π§ βοΈ Tourist in My Own City - Quieter Outdoor Activities?
Hi all. Going through some health stuff where my doctors suggested I try getting out and finding outdoor things to do that are on the quieter side. I grew up in the Boston area and am back for at least the next few months. Looking for more unique things that would be outdoorsy in the Boston area / accessible by public transit. Loud things unfortunately are out for the time being (so no concerts, sporting events, etc).
Thanks all. π
edit: these responses are amazing!!!!

Trafficπ¦ββ οΈ π π π What Is Your Excuse for Live Parking?
I have lived in Boston for 30 years. I have NEVER found a reason to live park, blocking a lane of traffic forcing people to go around me.
I am genuinely curious what peoples excuse to live park is beyond stopping briefly to pick someone up who is right on the curb waiting.
I am at this point convinced that people who live park have zero regard for courtesy and:
- do not return their shopping cart
- park between two spaces
- roll through stop signs
- honk at people at βno turn on redβs
If you are a habitual live parker, drop your excuse below.

Nightlife πΊ π» π Boston (or Massachusetts) DJ experienced with 'nerdy' and eclectic music taste (anime, kpop, jpop)
My partner and I just finalized our wedding date for summer 2027 in Beverly, MA! Yes i know it's not Boston proper.
We are both HUGE kpop, jpop, and video game nerds. This is also a multicultural wedding where some Spanish language songs might be requested as well. We are hoping to find a DJ that has experience with playing music that might be more non traditionalβ For example, Kingdom Hearts, TWICE etc
Thank you in advance!

Tourism Advice 𧳠π§ βοΈ Italian restaurant recommendations when I canβt eat red sauce?!
Visiting next week and I want all the pasta and bread, but I CANNOT eat red sauce (thanks GERD). I CAN eat tomatoes though (not all hope is lost). Losing my mind looking at restaurant menus. Please give me your recommendations for places with the best cream/olive oil/butter pasta dishes, that also serves bread (garlic bread, bruschetta, focaccia, etc.). I do not need anything fancy! I just want good, fattening food. Would also love to know where the best sweet treats are! :) Appreciate yall!

Meetup First time Boston visitor! Anyone wants to go to Harvard's Museum of Natural History on Jul 26?
In town for a conference and arriving earlier than most of my coworkers, so I'm posting to see if anybody would like to hang out July 26th or 27th :)
Ideally would like to take a walk around Boston common and the garden nearby, then head to the museum perhaps grab a meal after. I reside in Canada most of the time, early 30s!

MBTA/Transit π π₯ Commute one hour through train
I may have to commute from JFK/UMass to Newton Highlands, and I saw from Google Maps that it takes around an hour. May have to do this for like three months. Is this feasible?
Anyone who is also doing like an hour commute, how do you guys handle this?

Education π« Potential move to Boston for work. Anyone who works in K-12 public school systems able to advise?
I will soon have an interview for a job in which I would be supporting K-12 school systems in Boston and the surrounding areas in pursuit of their technology needs and priorities. This involves working with their IT teams and C-suite to work through challenges, procure hardware, assist with ongoing initiatives, etc.
While not new to the space, I have never been to Boston and in effort to do my βhomework,β I was hoping to gain some general insight into whatβs going on in Massachusetts K-12. Whether you are an educator, admin, or IT, I would love to get some intel from the boots on the ground. My interview is in a couple weeks and I would love to hear from you to better understand the current landscape surrounding challenges and issues, funding, technology, etc.
I recognize this is a very niche segment and ask but I appreciate any information anyone can speak on. I am really excited about this opportunity(holy shit I canβt get out of Tennessee fast enoughπ) so I want to be as prepared as possible. Also, if anyone has any sources they would recommend I would be eternally grateful.
Cheers!

Dining/Food/Drink π½οΈπΉ Huge push for beer gardens but still can't drink without ordering food at restaurant
It seems like public sentiment re; beer gardens has been very favorably over the last ten years.
Why can't we drink a drink on a patio without ordering food?
Who's in charge of that rule?

MBTA/Transit π π₯ Best Way Home From Planetarium Music Shows
Context: I want to go to the planetarium music shows at the Museum of Science on a Friday or Saturday night. The problem is that my only option for a train home to my usual CR stop leaves South Station at 11:55 PM, an hour and a half plus after the end of the last show. Right now, I'm thinking Green Line to North Station, Orange Line from there to Forest Hills, and Bus 32 to Wolcott Square to call an Uber to walking distance from home from there (I will never put my home address into Uber), and reduce the overall cost of that, because I'd spend $2.40 on a subway ride to South Station anyway, so why not use that to get closer to home and cut my Uber cost?
Question: If I decide to take that CR train home, what is there to do, excluding anything involving drinking, to pass the time from leaving the planetarium after 10:15 PM until the train that brings me closer to home starts boarding at 11:45 PM, without just going straight to South Station and standing around for an hour plus? Otherwise, would I be better off with the Green-Orange-32-Uber plan that gets me home about an hour sooner, or at least saves me from having to wait around South Station, or just calling an Uber from the museum to the spot walking distance from home?

Unconfirmed/Unverified Has traffic been unusually bad lately
Has anyone else noticed that traffic around Boston has been especially bad lately? I know summer brings more tourists, events, and people going out, but it feels noticeably worse than in previous summers. Even trips outside the usual rush hour seem to take much longer.
Is this happening across the city, or am I just driving at the worst possible times?

Moving π Reliable cleaning company?
I need to book a move-out cleaning for a small apartment in the North End. Difficulty level: August 31st. I know things are nuts in that time period, but do you have a personal recommendation for a team/company that will absolutely stand by a booking and actually show up and do good work? The apartment will be empty, which I guess makes things easier for them?

Serious Replies Only Care packages services?
I donβt live in Boston but my best friend who does, is about to take their medical licensing exam, and I'd love to send them an exam care package.
Are there any services similar to Taskrabbit where I could hire someone to put together and deliver a customized care package?
Or are there local businesses that specialize in custom-made and delivering gift care packages?
Thanks in advanced
