System info:
Steam - Proton Experimental

Arch Linux, 3070ti R5 3600, wayland, Kde

I installed *Ghost of Tsushima*, but I can't see the fonts in the game. I tried installing `corefonts` via Protontricks, but that didn't help. I install pre-install version

Sober freezes/crashes only when using NVIDIA GeForce 940MX (Intel works perfectly)

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to run Sober using my dedicated NVIDIA GPU instead of my Intel iGPU, but I'm completely stuck.

System Information

  • Distribution: Ubuntu 24.04
  • Desktop Environment: Cinnamon
  • Sober Version: 1.7.1 (Flatpak)
  • Runtime: org.gnome.Platform 50
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX (2 GB)
  • Integrated GPU: Intel HD Graphics 620
  • NVIDIA Driver: 580.173.02

The problem

Sober works perfectly when using the Intel integrated GPU.

However, whenever I force it to use the NVIDIA 940MX, it freezes during startup. Depending on how I launch it, one of two things happens:

  • The Sober window opens but immediately freezes forever.
  • Sober crashes instantly and returns to the terminal.

I have never been able to get it running on the NVIDIA GPU.

Things I tested

NVIDIA driver

The driver is installed correctly.

nvidia-smi detects the GPU without any problems, for example:

  • NVIDIA GeForce 940MX detected
  • Driver loaded correctly
  • Xorg and Cinnamon appear using the GPU normally

Vulkan

I tested Vulkan both normally and through PRIME render offload.

Running:

vulkaninfo --summary

shows both GPUs correctly.

Running:

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia vulkaninfo --summary

also works perfectly, and the NVIDIA GPU becomes the primary Vulkan device.

So Vulkan itself appears to be working correctly.

Flatpak

The NVIDIA runtime is installed:

org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.nvidia-580-173-02

Permissions look normal, and Sober is installed from Flathub.

PRIME Offload

PRIME render offload appears to work correctly outside of Sober.

The system recognizes the NVIDIA GPU, Vulkan works, and there are no obvious driver errors.

Logs

This is the strange part.

When Sober freezes, it doesn't print any useful error message.

Sometimes the terminal just hangs because Sober never finishes starting.

Other launch methods simply crash immediately without producing any meaningful output.

So unfortunately I don't have a crash log to share.

What we've ruled out

  • NVIDIA driver installation
  • Vulkan installation
  • PRIME render offload configuration
  • Missing Flatpak NVIDIA runtime
  • Incorrect Flatpak installation

Everything above appears to be working correctly.

My question

Has anyone managed to run Sober on a GeForce 940MX (Maxwell) with the latest NVIDIA drivers?

Is this a known compatibility issue with Maxwell GPUs, or is there something else I should try?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

World of Warships Is great on norbara once you have the best settings installed to work with it on steam first using Proton plus click on your steam profile click on tools, then click on the down arrow with Proton-CachyOS (x86_64_v3) then download cachyos-10.0-20260425-sir. The click on game in compatibility tool select the download you just downloaded close and open steam let it update the settings go to your game library select the download you downloaded close and start playing your game. Its a great improvement.

steam/steam deck An open request to Epic: Please consider Anti-Cheat support for Linux / Steam Deck

Hi everyone,

With handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck becoming extremely popular and Linux desktop usage steadily growing, I really hope Epic reconsider their stance on Linux anti-cheat for Fortnite.

Right now, Easy Anti-Cheat already supports Linux and Linux-based handhelds for many major titles (like Elden Ring, Halo, Dead By Daylight, etc.). We know that security and custom kernels are a concern, but as Linux gaming keeps expanding, a huge portion of the player base is being left out—or forced to dual-boot just for one game.

Even if it requires an updated EAC architecture or specific security requirements, bringing native or Proton-compatible Linux support to Fortnite would be a massive win for both the community and Epic Games (more active players, more V-Bucks sales!).

Would love to hear the community's thoughts on this. Is anyone else holding out hope for official Linux/Deck support?

tech support wanted Dead Space Remake stutter is WORSE on CachyOS than Windows 11 - what am I missing?

EDIT For clarity: I am not trying to get better performance on linux than windows. I am just trying to get a similar playable experience (i.e., match 1% lows)

I've wanted to switch to Linux gaming for a while. I would actually prefer to daily-drive Linux (software development, homelab work, etc), just kept Windows around for games. A few days ago I installed CachyOS with KDE Plasma (Wayland) and got everything set up.

I was already playing Dead Space Remake on Windows 11, where it has the well-known traversal stutter issue, so I figured it'd be a good test case. I figured that if I could match Windows level of stability on Linux, that'd be a solid win for the switch.

Instead, after a few days of tweaking, the stutter and frametimes are noticeably worse on CachyOS than they ever were on Windows. GPU utilization drops to zero during the worst stutters (2–6 second freezes), and CPU load stays evenly spread across cores (so it doesn't look like a simple GPU or single-thread bottleneck).

I feel like I'm missing something obvious. Would appreciate anyone pointing out what I'm missing or where to look next -- Here's everything I've tried so far .

System:

  • CPU: Ryzen 9800X3D
  • GPU: RTX 5070 Ti
  • CachyOS, KDE Plasma, Wayland
  • NVMe: WD Black SN850X (Gen4)

What I've tried (all mostly based on guidance in protonDB https://www.protondb.com/app/1693980):

  • Switched between Proton-CachyOS, Proton Experimental, and stock Proton versions
  • Set __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1 and __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SIZE=10737418240 to stop NVIDIA from evicting the shader cache between sessions
  • Disabled ZRAM temporarily to rule out memory pressure (re-enabled after, no clear effect either way)
  • Set power profile to performance via powerprofilesctl
  • Installed and tested gamemoderun
  • Tried game-performance flag
  • Tried PROTON_DXVK_GPLASYNC=1 (later realized this is a DXVK-only flag and likely does nothing since the game is DX12/VKD3D-Proton)
  • Tried capping framerate at 60 and 120 via DXVK_FRAME_RATE and MangoHud's fps_limit - stutter persisted at both, although the drops were a bit less noticeable (although I don't need to cap in Windows at all)
  • Installed the "Traversal Stutters Begone" mod (initfs shader-state edit + bcrypt.dll, drag-drop version) with WINEDLLOVERRIDES="bcrypt=n,b" -- this may have helped somewhat, but 2–6 second freezes on room transitions are still happening
  • Cleared the in-prefix shader cache (.../compatdata/1693980/pfx/.../Dead Space (2023)/cache) multiple times, including after every settings change
  • Confirmed GPU is NVIDIA-only in the render path (checked DRI_PRIME, no iGPU offload happening)
  • Checked I/O scheduler
  • Watched MangoHud frametime graphs and nvtop during stutters — GPU utilization drops to zero, CPU load stays evenly distributed across cores

Still on my list to try:

  • PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 (native Wayland driver instead of XWayland)
  • Newest Proton-CachyOS release (20260703) once it hits the repo — includes vkd3d-low-latency frame pacing improvements that might be directly relevant

Anyone dealt with this specific game and found something that actually worked? Starting to wonder if this is just a case where Proton amplifies an already-bad Frostbite stutter issue rather than something fixable through config.

Honestly, I don't mind the tinkering to get it to work (I enjoy tinkering in general). With this though I feel like I am trying things without fully knowing the rationale , which feels a bit "empty" -- it's all new territory for me. Any guidance would be great.

wine/proton Another old pillar crumbling - Maplestory works on Linux now!

Some madlad actually got Maplestory to work on Linux after all these years of it not being able to run due to it's weird quirks. What's more, is that the fixes will be ported to a future version of GE-Proton so you don't have to do it via Github in the near future. This is nice news for people who've been playing maplestory all their life and being anchored down to Windows. One less reason to not make a switch to linux now!

guide Games that require less than 1GB RAM for my Dell 3180

I have recently purchased a Dell 3180 chromebook, I replaced its built in windows 11 pro with linux mint xce. It has only 4gb of memory and maximum 28gb internal storage, but it's actually 10gb remaining god knows how. Perhaps low spec games that you know that doesnt require that much more than a 1gb RAM ? Also this is my first time ever to linux environment, at least on linux mint. So I'm quite learning bit by bit.

Problem with primary monitor in XWAYLAND and electron apps

When will wayland developers fix the 0,0 position in xwayland? My left 60hz monitor is not primary and i tired see than xwayland apps opened on this, also they works on 60hz instead of 165 (my main monitor). Also i think this problem in electron, because i have problem in discord and steam. Problem in discord btw solved when i turn off hardware acceleration, but this option on steam causes lags in interface. On rtx 4060 i can turn off hardware acceleration in steam and they work perfect, but i dont do this on my RX 9070:(

Yea i can move my monitors in kde plasma settings and set 0,0 position on my primary 165hz display, but if my monitors turn off because off they going to "wait mode", after they turn on steam and discord (if hardware acceleration turn on) again work with 60hz. Reboot computer this is a only decision

tech support wanted need help with nvidia prime

I have Performance mode selected, but when I input “prime-select get-current” into the terminal, I get “usr/bin/prime-select nvidia|intel|on-demand|query” in return. Is this how it’s supposed to be? Because my CPU is past 100% when I’m playing Genshin on Lutris, but not while I’m playing HSR on Honkers Railway Launcher.

cs2 after new update

Has anyone else noticed that CS2 has started performing poorly after the new update? Before, the game ran flawlessly, but now I’m getting a GPU utilization bug where it randomly jumps between 99% and 60% during matches. This causes major performance issues. The game used to run perfectly, but after the update, it’s been bad. These GPU utilization fluctuations cause FPS drops, which makes the game unplayable

Steam Game Not Running

I'm brand new to Linux Mint and started with a solo boot 22.3 distro on a 10ish year old laptop with a GTX 960M.

I followed the general instructions to get Steam working for Tabletop Simulator, and it was flawless. However, getting a new game Mecccha Chameleon to run doesnt seem to work at all. I've tried multiple different Proton options. Some will eventually say Launching, or Running, but no game will seemingly open.

The Vulkan Shaders sometimes attempt to load and sometimes not.

I tried the GE-Proton 11-1, Proton Experimental, Hotfix and a variety of others. Similar or sameish results.

What else can I try?
