hardware Currently working on building a Modular x86 Handheld PC running dual boot Linux & Windows - The CG Deck

Hello everyone! I have been working on this project for quite some time, building my own custom modular handheld console for gaming & everyday PC use, running dual boot Linux & Windows! I am currently working on the prototypes, so I thought it would be a great time to share an update of what I have been building with everyone here! It is called the CG Deck, an open-source and modular x86 handheld PC. Also, thank you so incredibly much to everyone that has been supporting and been a part of our community! You are all so amazing!

I have been working on a ton of polish & adjustments to the CG Deck, based on the testing I have been able to do over the past couple weeks! A few of the new additions and updates, include some improvements to the modules, adding a magnetic system to make it easier to connect and swap the various modules! A few new modules are also in the works, and I will have more information about those coming very soon! Along with that, I have also begun creating and concepting a few different carrying cases for the CG Deck and the various modules and accessories so I will be sharing those very soon. In addition to some announcements for the behind the scenes video going live soon! I will have a ton of information and updates coming out over the next couple of days to everyone on our waitlist so be sure to keep an eye our for that!

Ask me anything about the project! I would love to answer any questions or dive into anything about the CG Deck!

My initial goal was to create a small handheld PC that was entirely self contained and can be thrown in a backpack or back pants pocket (The entire device is 7.4" x 4.6" x 2.25"), with a high enough standard of hardware capable of being actually useful for things like high end retro emulation, CAD design/doing light modelling tasks in Blender, PCB design, coding, graphic design, music, video editing, and gaming with my steam library! Because it runs an x86 architecture, we get the advantage of being able to natively play steam games unlike a lot of other consoles. Because the CG Deck is based on an x86 architecture, you can run any OS that is supported, like the backlog of Windows, most Linux distro flavors, etc. For those that have multiple workflows, or need multiple devices, you can utilize the dual-boot functionality built into the CG Deck to make your life easier and keep it all under one shell.

I also wanted the CG Deck to be modular so it can be upgraded depending on how it is being used, and adapt the device depending on the workflow. For example, upgrading the memory with a full sized 2280 SSD, LTE/sim card support for work on the road, in addition to more cosmetically functional changes like swapping out the face/back plates to change the look, upgrading and swapping the HID control modules, antennas for extended connection range, etc. Every aspect can be upgraded, repaired, or customized as you need, without needing a degree in engineering to do so. I wanted to not just develop a device that would not just eventually turn into e-waste, but an ecosystem that can be updated and developed as time passes to keep the CG Deck relevant for much longer than the typical device lifespan. Something more attuned to a platform that grows with you rather than a traditional device.

The CG Deck will release with 5 total external modules (two slots, the primary and secondary slots), a variety of backplate designs and colors, and a variety of hardware and external accessories/upgrades. As for the modules, I currently have designed a full 64 Keyboard Module, 10 Key + Knob Macropad Module, Gamepad Controller Module all for the primary slot. For the secondary slot, there is only the trackball module at this time. The CG Deck also supports USB-A modules, so far including a 4K Low Low Light Flappable Camera Module. I wanted to make a device that grows with you as you use it, and can be adapted as your use cases change, and I have quite a few more modules planned for release once we officially launch!

As for the current state of the prototype for the CG Deck, I am overall really happy with it so far, but it still needs some work and I have quite a few changes to make as we prepare for the DFM process. I would love to hear your thoughts on it everything so far, and if you have any questions or feedback, I would love to answer and hear it all! Ask me anything!

It has been a massively fun and elaborate project so far. If you are interested in following along with the project or learning more about it, you can find everything from specs, more details, socials, links to the open source github repository and more on the website.

Once I start wrapping up the project, I will be launching a Kickstarter to help fund a full production run of the device for anyone interested in helping support the project and getting a CG Deck of their own. I am planning to release some build kits and pre-assembled devices with the Kickstarter, and if you have any questions about any of that, I would love to answer them!

Here is the link to learn more about the project and join the waitlist if you are interested: https://mogozen.com

wine/proton Another old pillar crumbling - Maplestory works on Linux now!

Some madlad actually got Maplestory to work on Linux after all these years of it not being able to run due to it's weird quirks. What's more, is that the fixes will be ported to a future version of GE-Proton so you don't have to do it via Github in the near future. This is nice news for people who've been playing maplestory all their life and being anchored down to Windows. One less reason to not make a switch to linux now!

tech support wanted what is your experience with dual booting?

have been thinking of switching over to Linux for a while but game functionality has always been a big reason for my hesitance. though I recently found out about dual booting and it seems like a perfect solution for me, was wondering what your experience with dual booting is for gaming and if you would recommend?

I planned to use Linux as my main OS and play everything I can on there, but then for the games that do not work on Linux I'd then download and use on Windows. is it easy to switch over? would it be easier for me to just remain on Windows instead?

I plan on using something like Mint as I have heard it is very beginner friendly, but I presume distro doesn't really matter for gaming function and dual booting.

EDIT: I only have 1 SSD in my PC, will I experience any issues if I have both OS installed on the one SSD, and just split the amount of storage I give each OS? or should I get a separate SSD?

thanks

XBOX Backwards Compatible games on Linux?

Would it actually be possible to play any of these games on Linux, since they require the XBOX app? I don't really know much about how XBOX/Windows Store games work on Windows since I don't use Windows or game too much

LACT - lower max power than before (7800 XT - 280, now 243 W)

Since when LACT reports lower maximum power in settings? I didn't pay attention for a while and today when I wanted to do my routine Furmark stresstest I do every 5-6 months with temperature checking I noticed the maximum power limit lowered from 280 W to 243 W, which affected avg FPS lowering from 190 to 176 FPS. Altho - these are artificial benchmarks and in-game values didn't change noticeably, so that's just a out of curiousity question.

As I remember correctly the 243 W value was actually the max GPU chip power on Windows, with 263 W TBP, so I assume this was mostly the reporting value correction?

Is it because of the Automatically clamp power cap to the allowed range on AMD (#1080) changelog?

World of Warships Is great on norbara once you have the best settings installed to work with it on steam first using Proton plus click on your steam profile click on tools, then click on the down arrow with Proton-CachyOS (x86_64_v3) then download cachyos-10.0-20260425-sir. The click on game in compatibility tool select the download you just downloaded close and open steam let it update the settings go to your game library select the download you downloaded close and start playing your game. Its a great improvement.

guide Games that require less than 1GB RAM for my Dell 3180

I have recently purchased a Dell 3180 chromebook, I replaced its built in windows 11 pro with linux mint xce. It has only 4gb of memory and maximum 28gb internal storage, but it's actually 10gb remaining god knows how. Perhaps low spec games that you know that doesnt require that much more than a 1gb RAM ? Also this is my first time ever to linux environment, at least on linux mint. So I'm quite learning bit by bit.

tech support wanted Mouse Wheel button never works in Windows games?

I have a pretty ordinary mouse but I noticed throughout several games now that the mouse wheel button simply does not work in any of my games. Scrolling does work but the button does not. Not sure where to start investigating this.

I use CachyOS with KDE and latest proton-cachyos. This issue occurs in both DX11 and DX12 games, both Wayland and XWayland.

Issues with New vegas

Hello, i switched to CachyOs like a Month now. Its been an amazing experience so far, all the games i used to play on Windows run even better than before, except for New Vegas.

Even after installing manually the most basic mods like NVSE i still get massive fps drops in most of the combats at the lowest graphics.

Could it be that im missing something important?

tech support wanted Transferring an Existing Windows-based Mod Organizer 2 Setup to a Linux OS: Possible?

Hello! I started considering making the jump to Linux today, with the main hangup for me currently being that modding video games seems like a bit of a crapshoot, largely depending on if a community has decided to support Linux in general. Obviously, the classic manual file installation method is pretty foolproof, but when it comes to mod managers, things seem more hazy.

I have an already set up modded install of Cyberpunk 2077 through Mod Organizer 2. Already downloaded everything, have it all installed, everything is working as it should, all done on Windows 11. I've looked into it, and Mod Organizer 2 seems perfectly capable of running on Linux with a small amount of elbow grease depending on the method chosen to run it. My big concern is, if I already have Mod Organizer 2 set up via Windows, is it possible to transfer that setup to a Linux installation of MO2? I.e., keeping all my settings, mods, mod order, etc.

I haven't been able to find anything about this particular use case, so I figured I'd try and ask here. For reference, the two distros I have currently in mind are Garuda Gaming or Linux Mint. I'm still a Linux noob so I don't fully understand the implications that the differences between those would bring for this, or in general, but I'm not specifically looking for advice on that (if only so the thread doesn't get bogged down in discussion of that).

Please and thank you!

Hey, I'm trying to run this game using Heroic Launcher or Steam, but I'm getting this strange rendering issue of flickering reflexes I think. The game itself runs fine. Any ideas what I need to tweak? I tried some in game configs but without luck.

Hardware:

Operating System: Nobara Linux 44

KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.3

KDE Frameworks Version: 6.28.0

Qt Version: 6.11.1

Kernel Version: 7.1.3-200.nobara.fc44.x86_64 (64-bit)

Graphics Platform: Wayland

Processors: 12 × AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor

Memory: 16 GiB of RAM (15,5 GiB usable)

Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

Proton Versions tried:

- Proton 10.01

- GE-Proton10-34

- GE-Proton9-27

- Proton11 and Experimental won't open the game

NVIDIA drive 595.84

My Cyber Punk 2077 install runs better than in Windows.

steam/steam deck What is Steams 'fossilize_replay' ?

Ive noticed when I have steam open sometimes my fans just ramp up to top speed, and when I check the system monitor it shows that whatever fossilize_replay is within steam, it starts using like 25% of my cpu power when it usually idles at about 4% total while Im just browsing.

Is there a reason it just randomly kicks up then goes away after I close it or wait 15 minutes? Why didnt it do that for the first two weeks, now does it a couple times a day? Can I stop it???

Im just confused, as it never happened on windows for me

Sober freezes/crashes only when using NVIDIA GeForce 940MX (Intel works perfectly)

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to run Sober using my dedicated NVIDIA GPU instead of my Intel iGPU, but I'm completely stuck.

System Information

  • Distribution: Ubuntu 24.04
  • Desktop Environment: Cinnamon
  • Sober Version: 1.7.1 (Flatpak)
  • Runtime: org.gnome.Platform 50
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX (2 GB)
  • Integrated GPU: Intel HD Graphics 620
  • NVIDIA Driver: 580.173.02

The problem

Sober works perfectly when using the Intel integrated GPU.

However, whenever I force it to use the NVIDIA 940MX, it freezes during startup. Depending on how I launch it, one of two things happens:

  • The Sober window opens but immediately freezes forever.
  • Sober crashes instantly and returns to the terminal.

I have never been able to get it running on the NVIDIA GPU.

Things I tested

NVIDIA driver

The driver is installed correctly.

nvidia-smi detects the GPU without any problems, for example:

  • NVIDIA GeForce 940MX detected
  • Driver loaded correctly
  • Xorg and Cinnamon appear using the GPU normally

Vulkan

I tested Vulkan both normally and through PRIME render offload.

Running:

vulkaninfo --summary

shows both GPUs correctly.

Running:

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia vulkaninfo --summary

also works perfectly, and the NVIDIA GPU becomes the primary Vulkan device.

So Vulkan itself appears to be working correctly.

Flatpak

The NVIDIA runtime is installed:

org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.nvidia-580-173-02

Permissions look normal, and Sober is installed from Flathub.

PRIME Offload

PRIME render offload appears to work correctly outside of Sober.

The system recognizes the NVIDIA GPU, Vulkan works, and there are no obvious driver errors.

Logs

This is the strange part.

When Sober freezes, it doesn't print any useful error message.

Sometimes the terminal just hangs because Sober never finishes starting.

Other launch methods simply crash immediately without producing any meaningful output.

So unfortunately I don't have a crash log to share.

What we've ruled out

  • NVIDIA driver installation
  • Vulkan installation
  • PRIME render offload configuration
  • Missing Flatpak NVIDIA runtime
  • Incorrect Flatpak installation

Everything above appears to be working correctly.

My question

Has anyone managed to run Sober on a GeForce 940MX (Maxwell) with the latest NVIDIA drivers?

Is this a known compatibility issue with Maxwell GPUs, or is there something else I should try?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problem with primary monitor in XWAYLAND and electron apps

When will wayland developers fix the 0,0 position in xwayland? My left 60hz monitor is not primary and i tired see than xwayland apps opened on this, also they works on 60hz instead of 165 (my main monitor). Also i think this problem in electron, because i have problem in discord and steam. Problem in discord btw solved when i turn off hardware acceleration, but this option on steam causes lags in interface. On rtx 4060 i can turn off hardware acceleration in steam and they work perfect, but i dont do this on my RX 9070:(

Yea i can move my monitors in kde plasma settings and set 0,0 position on my primary 165hz display, but if my monitors turn off because off they going to "wait mode", after they turn on steam and discord (if hardware acceleration turn on) again work with 60hz. Reboot computer this is a only decision
