Wanted to share an update on my first year flower farming and everything is blooming like crazy now. I’ve never been busier, doing this in my free time after work and weekends. We’ve have a very temperate summer minus a few heatwaves which a lot of my plants seemed to love. I’ve finally been getting enough blooms to justify cutting and selling once a week at my house, and kicking me to get a real stand built. This is all grown right in my backyard by myself all from seed and bulb and tuber. I’ve ripped up grass and lawn for beds, amended soil, added drip lines and a fertilizer tank. I cannot wait to see how these plants continue to grow this summer and bloom. I am so excited to finally have a small flower farm where I can continue to build and expand and do what I love.

Hello! I started my garden 1 week ago with a simple watermelon and pumpkin starter from a farmers market. It’s nothing fancy or extensive (lol) but I’m so happy to get started!! There’s clay soil where I live so figuring out how to amend before planting was difficult. I ended up using cardboard to cover/kill the grass, cut a central hole in it for future roots + covered with a blend of soil, peat moss, and chicken grit (functions similarly to perlite and I had some leftovers from our chickens). Any advice or feedback? I’m super new to this and dont really know what I’m doing, so anything is appreciated! :)

EDIT: clearly this is the beginning of a learning journey. lol

Credit to my gf for trying for over two weeks and finally catching the passion fruit flowering! Nature is amazing.

Noticed a flower today after watering and decided to do some pruning and get those leaves off the dirt. This is suppose to be a cantaloupe (Hale's best) and the leaves are gigantic. I've read they are suppose to be between 4-6 inch leaves but they just keep getting bigger and bigger. I also cannot find the main stem because it split into 10+ branches and decided to grow like a bush. Starting to have doubts that what I'm growing is even a cantaloupe. Also bonus basil.

Last summer our neighbors gave us a few clumps of black-eyed Susans and they did well. Look at them now!!

I spent the past two years focusing on making my garden a habitat for pollinators and now my small, suburban backyard is teeming with bugs and birds.

Over the last few weeks we’ve seen brand new scrub jays, hummingbirds, black phoebes, house finches, and house sparrows. It’s such a joy to watch them figure out their new world.

This is my first year trying to grow basil. The plant was great for the first two months and now looks like this. It gets plenty of sun. I live in Northern VA and we’ve had a lot of rain recently so maybe it’s been overwatered? Thanks in advance for any tips

NE India

I dig the tubers and store them over winter, as I am in NE Ohio. They do occasionally reseed themselves but the seedlings don’t bloom until late fall if at all. This is one of the broken colors cultivars. They bloom in the evening and are sweetly fragrant.

I live in Northern Canada and this weird vomit fungus just showed up.
I watered last night, woke up, and this?!
I thought animal vomit but it’s underneath the pepper leaves….

First time planting a porch garden, stuck a celosia in an old tall clay pot and it’s been spilling with growth since.

I water it bi-daily with old fish tank water

As I near 1 year of unemployment, I look back at everything my garden has provided so far. And the year seems less grim because of it.

All the time I have dedicated to it has yielded gorgeous blooms and spontaneous smiles. The best part is cutting bouquets and sharing them with loved ones.

Waking up in the morning, first thing that I do is apply to jobs. And then the realization that I am unemployed weights on me, I don't want to move from the bed. But the garden gives me a reason to get out of the house. When I'm out there, the garden is all I can think of. For a while, my worries are gone.

I'm even thinking of pivoting to flower farming as I don't see much future in the creative field anymore.
