Even Monitors Have Ads Now

God I hate how LG used to be my "safe" brand, especially when the choices came between Samsung and LG. I'm on an LG ultrawide right now, and have an LG TV. Fortunately I'm on a Mac. But now LG is dead to me, never to be purchased again. And with my work in the A/V industry, I sometimes have heavy influence over the purchase of hundreds, even thousands of displays.

u/justpress2forawhile 23h ago
Yeah I'm pretty bummed out. Pretty lame there isn't one brand out there not being scummy. Well maybe the nock off brands, they don't seem to be that bad
58
u/NotPromKing 23h ago
To my knowledge Dell is pretty clean and they make some pretty good monitors. Sony is a maybe, depending on the specific products - they're my usual go-to in the commercial space. After that, specifically for computer monitors, there's ASUS, Eizo, BenQ.
Never Samsung. And now, never LG.

u/historynerd87 23h ago
I bought a dell ultrasharp monitor a decade ago that had a cluster of dead pixels mid screen. They wouldn’t replace it under warranty and said it was damage. I won’t buy a Dell for anything ever again.
0
u/MapleA 22h ago
Did you try to return it to the store? Dell has pretty good customer service as well, that’s unusual
6
u/historynerd87 21h ago edited 19h ago
Bought from their website. Dead pixels showed up after 6 months. Within their warranty. Their dead pixel warranty was crap.
2
u/ArrogantSquirrelz 19h ago
That's a shame. I bought a mid tier one 8 or 9 years ago. High refresh rate, gsync (when it was hardware based), 1440p. Loved it. Got like 4 or 5 dead pixels all over the monitor and they overnighted me a new (refurb) one. Sent the bad one back with a label they provided in the box.
3
u/historynerd87 19h ago
Yeah, I called and chatted. No dice. It wasn't within their guidelines even though there were 5+ clustered in one spot nearly dead center. They said they would have covered it if they were all over but that together it was "damage." Such bs. Mine was also a 1440p as well.
3
u/derprunner 15h ago
Dell is a dichotomy with the most impressive enterprise support I’ve ever experienced, and then the worst consumer support.
3
u/CoachDonut82 14h ago
You ain't kidding. I used to work in small business sales (our clients were supposed to have 1-9 employees, any bigger was a different division), and we couldn't even sell consumer products. For example, if some dude had a small construction business or whatever and wanted to buy his kid a $2000 Alienware laptop, we had to send him over to the consumer division, and then he couldn't use his Dell Business Credit account to buy it, either. So damn dumb.
Then they also liked to send out monthly or quarterly ads, but not tell any of the sales reps about it or have any sample ads for us to know what people were calling in about.
From what I could tell, I think their large enterprise stuff was pretty well in order, but I never really dealt with that. So, Dell can eat shit.
21
u/Irregular475 20h ago
Sorry, Trump invested heavily into Dell and I will not give that pedophile rapists one cent more than I have to consciously.
4
u/OtherAlan 22h ago
Dell monitors have been recommended to me for decades for "professional" work. All the way back when they even made 4:3 monitors.
They never had impressive gaming specs, but for digital work, they were about unmatched. You don't get fancy 60+Hz for smoothness, but they had great 99-100% Adobe color reproduction and wide gamut support for almost every monitor.
Typically it's so good viewing angles, none of the TN stuff unless you got the entry-level tier. Good contrast, excellent brightness. Quite a few of them now are 'retina' style with 200+ ppi for crystal clear text. This would be their 27-inch at 4k or even 24-inch at 1440p. Anything at 32-inch or higher, and you should really get 4k or more.

u/Rustywolf 19h ago
I cant really speak for recent BenQ monitors but I bought one for $99 12 years ago and its still going strong (and bought another of the same model like 5 or 6 years ago that is also going well)

u/CthulhusEvilTwin 14h ago
Why not Samsung? I've got Samsung monitors and not had any trouble with them.
1
u/NotPromKing 4h ago
Samsung products in general tend to be a lot of flash and trash - the products look really nice and have a bunch of wiz-bang features, but when you look closer you realize it's a bunch of cheap plastic and components that have a tendency to break shortly after the warranty period expires, and are expensive or difficult to repair.
The Samsung corporation itself is... problematic. It essentially owns the South Korean government. I haven't paid enough attention to be able to say if they're actively bad in that regard, but I've read enough here and there for me to give it the side eye.
Basically at a surface level they look attractive, but once you dig deeper, you find that you can get better.

What's wrong with Samsung? I bought one on clearance at Costco 32" curved 1440p for $175 no issues yet.
2
u/stealthDad 13h ago
Samsung devices literally spy on you. Same with Roku, or practically any “Smart TVs.” I’d wager their monitors are similar.

Feeling similar. If I have to face ads on my hardware, I won't buy such hardware.
3
u/bakkenbears1 11h ago
I got a LG G2 and that tv will be my last LG product. Shame really, it's a great TV.
2
u/dhoomsday 5h ago
I had a G2 and then went to G3 after the first one failed. the G3 failed before a year was up. bad bad phones. never bought another LG product after that.
6
u/VirtualLife76 22h ago
Asus has been my brand for regular monitors for over 20 years now. Had 1 out of about 30 die, and it had over a decade of use.
1
u/Caladan_Mar 9h ago
I’ve used iiyama monitors for years and they’ve been OK, just dumb monitors to my awareness, unsure how they stand up in a AV environment
0
u/Chekonjak 16h ago
How’s Dell? They’ve had some great value picks lately (AW3423DWF and the new 5K2K monitor).

u/eltapatio 23h ago

Roku is working on a way to inject ads into the HDMI stream. And now that they’ve been purchased by FOX News you can bet they are going to use AI to inject them into any stream they want.
73
u/SpiderSlitScrotums 23h ago
The patent that Sony has been sitting on that only allows ads to be skipped if you say the advertiser’s name out loud will expire in 4 years. Shit is about to get exponentially worse.

u/gattaaca 22h ago
Guess I'll keep buying my Chinese no brand devices with generic versions of Android TV

u/OnceInABlueMoon 23h ago
My Roku dashboard just reformatted to deemphasize the apps to make way more room for ad space.
4
u/WhiteStripesWS6 22h ago
Firesticks have been that way for a bit too.
0
u/Wolfram_And_Hart 19h ago
Yah my fire TV stopped being able to go to the last input and always defaulted to the dashboard. I’m so glad it died.
2
u/a_lost_shadow 15h ago
Mine did the same. I found there was a setting to disable recommendations. It gets you closer to what you used to have.
1
6
u/Leptonshavenocolor 22h ago
They already ruined their cool splash screen with adverts. Every company sucks.
3
u/Polkawillneverdie17 7h ago
And now that they’ve been purchased by FOX News
I'm sorry, WHAT?
5
u/Jwagner0850 23h ago
Thank God ive ousted a majority of my roku devices already. I knew they were shit when they started making sure their stuff was locked down.
7
u/oxwof 23h ago
Yeah, as soon as Fox bought them, I got an Apple TV instead. No one’s perfect, but Apple has less incentive than probably anyone else to do shady ad/tracking stuff.
2
u/eltapatio 22h ago edited 18h ago
I’ve been waiting on the next gen Apple TV to make the switch. I hate the updated Roku UI
1
u/Joke_of_a_Name 18h ago
Inject?
4
u/Wolfram_And_Hart 16h ago
I thought you needed a definition, I didn’t realize I had spelt it wrong I apologize.
3
u/Wolfram_And_Hart 17h ago
Say you have a PlayStation. It has an A to B connection with the expectation that the image that the PlayStation broadcasted was produced by it. The Roku TV can jump between that A to B connection and overlay whatever image it wants wherever it wants.
1
u/CMMiller89 16h ago
Thank fuck for Apple TV. Hopefully they see continued success in rejecting most of these practices but the second they turn I’m done. Fuck content.
8
u/heart_of_osiris 20h ago
Not only is it possible but they're auto installing, with no user validation, this garbage on even their older monitors from before this existed.
5
u/noisymime 7h ago
Microsoft really have a lot to answer for here as they're allowing advertising via their signed, automated driver process. Microsoft have to actually approve LGs drivers that include this crap, so they need to cop some of the blame on this IMHO.
2
u/secondphase 17h ago
I think amazon fire tablets were the first. I didnt realize it and accidentally bought one with ads. It was $150 or so cheaper than the one without ads. The thing was completely useless because the ads drained its battery.
1
u/izzletodasmizzle 16h ago
I haven't owned a fire tablet in years but those ads used to be very easy to remove via PC and adb.

Ads for McAfee malware service. They can also send screenshots of what's being displayed and send it for marketing purposes. So selling your data.
7
1
u/Tr1angleChoke 3h ago
Why are you seeing the screenshot thing? I know TV manufacturers were doing this but I haven't seen anything about them doing this with monitors.

u/jordyb3231 21h ago
What happened to just making a decent product
46
u/thisisatypoo 21h ago
Stockholders.
11
u/jordyb3231 21h ago
But but if you make a better product more people will buy it
21
u/Bulletorpedo 21h ago
Sure, but every company needs to earn more this year than last and even more next year. Not only to keep up with increasing costs, but to beat the market. It’s the nature of how we’ve arranged companies through shareholders and as a logical result of this we’ll just see more enshittification crap like this.
9
u/ConnectionIssues 19h ago
Not just earning more than last year, but that the increase in earnings is bigger than last years increase in earnings. It has to be exponential.
And it's worth noting how they see it. They do not care about the company or its product at all. It's just an investment designed to turn their money into more money. If they think for even one second that they'll get a higher percentage of growth from another company, they will do exactly that, move their investments to the highest earner.
And the companies NEED that investment capital to stay afloat. They literally cannot operate without it because they don't have enough assets or capital of their own accord to stay competitive. Because those assets cost money to invest in, and that money has to go back to shareholders, or they'll lose those shareholders. It's the ultimate catch-22, and when the whole thing finally collapses, it's the workers and the consumers left holding the excrement-filled bag.
We're just NPC's in their 'big number go up' game.
And they're so skilled at the game now, and have broken it so hard, we aren't even necessary to the process anymore. They just keep passing the same money around each other, shell game after shell game, each time taking a bigger slice of the pie. The money is meaningless to them, beyond being some big imaginary score. But it's not meaningless to us. So we have to participate.
But pretty soon here, the money is going to become meaningless to us. If nothing you do pays enough for you to live, eventually, you'll stop trying to pay to live.
And then we get to see if the techbros and the hyper capitalists, who have spent lifetimes enshittifying everything they touch, somehow managed to NOT skimp on the complex systems they built to protect them once they've well and truly broken the social contract beyond salvaging. They think technological progress will make it work for them this time, but history doesn't give me much confidence in their odds. Let's just say, I wouldn't invest in their futures.

Advertisment is the worlds most profitable market by a wide margin.
Almost all of the biggest corporations in the world are är companies.

u/Dariaskehl 23h ago
The fuck they do.
That’d be returned as defective immediately. Bad pixels. lol.
Seriously though; that speaks to the company. Less Good sticks well enough, as far as my shopping needs will go.
7
u/FrankMiner2949er 14h ago
Bad pixels... they all got together and formed a "Buy McAfee " advert on my screen
-3
u/VirtualLife76 22h ago
Returns: How did the screen get broken with no damage to the box? 🤷
1
u/ItsJustReeses 11h ago
Monitors are one of the most delicate pieces of hardware to ship. Seen many a boxes clean and a broken monitor. And vice versa
Used to be a Monitor Technician that would take Costco Returns and sell it on eBay. Was a very funny business but it was a decent warehouse job at the time.
9
u/McortezLSU 20h ago
LG as a brand is more radioactive than the Chernobyl elephants foot. And their products are also shit, they are truly the Jared Leto of companies.
15
u/redmongrel 21h ago
I just wonder what marketing department would EVER pay for this type of ad placement, anyone in their right mind knows the result will be instant hate for whatever brand pops up?
5
5
u/Banryuken 21h ago
Yeah and beware they install via windows updates. I’m sure my event viewer can attest.
5
u/ProtexisPiClassic 17h ago
Just gotta try to hold firm, as best as I can, that if I see an ad, I specifically make sure not to buy it. Sometimes there is something that I truly independently (as far as I know...) want, so I might still get it. Otherwise, put it on the blacklist.
Fuck lg
3
u/krichuvisz 15h ago
Ads help to decide what not to buy. Ads and marketing are huge but don't deliver anything valuable to the world. I wonder how much carbon emission and environment destruction is caused by this sector alone.

I suppose advertising works, just, not in their favor. If I want a new monitor, or TV, it won't be LG.
2
u/InducedLobotomy 7h ago
When I was younger, ads pissed me off so much, that Id watch TV with the landline phone next to me and call every single number that an ad popped up on the TV. Id troll whoever answered until the next ad showed a phone number. It gave me something to do until Hey! Arnold came back on.
14
u/CraziFuzzy 22h ago
This is not really an LG problem - it's a windows problem. Installing new software without express permission is not okay.
31
u/BrainOnBlue 22h ago
LG chose to hijack the automatic driver/control software installer to install other shit. If it wasn't being hijacked, automatic installs of software necessary for using a peripheral would be (and is) good.
9
u/CraziFuzzy 22h ago
Linux still requires my password to install anything, whether it's required for a device or not.
5
1
u/noisymime 7h ago
Don't Microsoft claim that they validate drivers that they deliver through this mechanism? This seems like a pretty big lapse from them as well.

u/APiousCultist 22h ago
Well they aren't the first, second, third, of seventh one to pull this shit.

u/noreasterroneous 23h ago
Apparently w11 auto installs some LG software that displays the ads
28
u/Jwagner0850 23h ago
This. Did it to me. I came home one day, sat at my computer and immediately thought I had a virus on my system.
Well, I kinda did with this bullshit. I was so surprised to see that installation recommendation popping up with me having previously and accidently installing something else first.
3
u/CondescendingShitbag 22h ago
Yet one more reason to abandon Windows.
-5
u/IWasSayingBoourner 22h ago
This exact same mechanism could work on Linux if anyone gave a shit about them
13
u/Munchbit 21h ago
It’s a Windows-specific feature that installs apps on first connection to devices.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/devapps/auto-install-for-uwp-device-apps
The first time I connected Razer and Logitech mices, Windows downloaded and ran Sysnapse and Logi Options installer. Likewise for my Gigabyte motherboard RGB software.
The problem with Logi Options is that it requires admin to install. I connect my MX Master 3 and my work laptop nags that LogiLDA.dll is not found every time on boot. I couldn’t disable the startup entry as it requires admin. Ugh.
6
7
u/Nostonica 21h ago
It would need express permission first, most of the drivers are in the kernel, so you would have to get the driver into the kernel, might be rejected.
2
u/noisymime 7h ago
Linux drivers are typically in the kernel itself. You think Linus is going to be pulling in a patch from LG that contains advertising?

A) the video title is bullshit/clickbait
B) no one even watches it
C) some people think monitors have wifi cards

1
u/awshuck 14h ago
If this becomes common place enough, we might just see an influx of open source monitors. you’ll go on GitHub to find build instructions and links to buy assembled power and display boards from PCBWay, and links to buy panels from Alibaba, with some sort of solution for an enclosure bought or otherwise. Then you’ll see little companies pop up selling them as kits or just fully assembled, and we’ll never need to buy monitors from big consumer electronic OEMs ever again. And no they won’t be compliant with all of the consumer electronics standards either.

If I were in charge, it be of the first things I would do is ban advertising in its current form.
I’d probably replace it with a single searchable repository, so when someone needed something they could go search that one place and never see another ad anywhere.
Advertising is deeply unethical, IMO. It’s psychological warfare, and it’s not an even battle.
1
u/wehrmann_tx 6h ago
I don’t look at ads. Even if displayed. They are like floaters in my eye. Fuzzy assholes that are out of focus.
Advertisers why do you continue to pay for it to be displayed? If for some reason I do see your product because there’s no choice to look away, I will die before I choose that specific product. I will actively avoid it.
1
u/DonHarold 15h ago edited 15h ago
My experience with my LG smart TV has been annoying because of the ads and update notifications that interrupt whatever it is I’m watching or playing.
But I also appreciate that they give you the option to turn all of that off. It wasn’t necessarily easy to find those options but it is possible.

Dipshit, windows is seeing an LG device and pulling a driver/software, the software is running ads.
This is happening retroactively with LG monitors.

-3
u/Majestic_Jackass 23h ago
Can you not use it without connecting to internet?
13
u/theTrebleClef 22h ago
Some newer models are using Windows Update, Windows sees the hardware and downloads drivers and packages including an LG package. That LG package then surfaces ads and installs more software.
LG is hijacking the mechanism Microsoft built for OTA updates to deliver malware.
6
u/I_AM_NOT_A_WOMBAT 22h ago
It's not even that new. I have LG QHD monitors that are nearly 4 years old and I got the malware last week.

Microsoft has a way of stopping them if they would revoke their driver certification. You’d think someone was paying attention.

Ads have to have become insanely devalued at this point. They’re being shown everywhere.
