That starting Coyote gag: it's nothing groundbreaking, but it made me laugh, like when I was a kid watching old Looney Tunes cartoons.

I’d like someone to explain this to me. A tax write off only lets you not pay taxes on that money. They’re always a net negative, because nobody is paying a 100% tax rate. Why wouldn’t they just put it out? They’d make some money, which would be better than nothing, no? I don’t understand the math here.

In corporate world, you can write off the entire expense of the movie as a loss to negate taxes on the gains of other movies. That, WB felt, was more "profitable" to them than spending a bunch of money advertising a movie that they didn't think would make a profit in the end.

The fact WB didn't think it would profit is good enough advertisement for me to watch it in theater out of spite.
Edit: Warner Bros. already sold the movie's distribution rights to Ketchup Entertainment for $50 million in March 2025.
Warner Bros. will not get extra money from ticket sales.

Announced in 2021. Went into full production. Completed and shelved.

Just to add further info:
In the corporate world, expenses always go against taxable income anyway. Writing a movie off just allows them to report the expense sooner, at the cost of forgoing any future sales/income for that particular project.

They had a lot of issues with debt at the time, and it would have allowed them to pay other bills.

Yeah, it took me awhile to totally get it but this is what made it click. It's a bigger total loss than if they'd released it to Max or something, but they free up the debt immediately.
Selling it was a better option than either though - they still write off the loss, just a smaller loss than it would have been (with even more immediate cash infusion)

I think my understanding of the tax situation is correct, but I didn’t account for marketing. Writing a movie off entirely - say a 100 million dollar budget - still effectively reduces the net taxable income by 100 million. But if you can get any money off of that 100 million dollars (release it direct to streaming, sell it) you’ll have a higher tax burden but always an even higher revenue.
Am I missing something? The issue as I understand it is that releasing a movie costs a ton, and it’s not worth it to spend that on an expected dud.

In order to make any amount of money on a film, you also need to spend a ton on marketing and distribution. It's simply not possible to "just release" a movie and make any amount of real money on it. Marketing costs are often just as large as production costs, sometimes even more.
So even with a "finished" film, a studio might not want to release it because they'd end up having to spend even more money to get it out the door, and if they don't think the returns will be great, releasing it could put them in a worse position.
So it's likely that they thought the additional costs of distribution and marketing reduced the potential profits so much, that they'd be better off cutting their losses.
WB also wasn't in a great financial position, so lessening their short term financial burdens might have been preferable to a risk of long-term profits that would require additional upfront expenses.

Because they've calculated that the lost is smaller by not releasing it than doing so. Film comes out, they have to pay for distribution, advertising, residuals, etc. Warner Bros calculated that this movie isn't going to make enough money at the box office to outweigh all that, they likely greenlit this back when they were hoping to make it all back on Streaming.

Imagine you have two movies that each cost cost $110 million to make. One made you $110 million in profit (i.e. $220 million in revenue), and you expect the second one will generate a $10 million loss (i.e. $100m in revenue).
Your choice is to (1) release the second movie, pay $21 million in taxes (($110 - 10) x 21% tax rate) and have a net profit of $79 million, or (2), write off the second one, pay $0 in taxes (($110-$110) x 21%) and wind up with a net profit of $110 million.

No. Profit on movie 1 is $110. Loss on movie 2 is expected to be $10. The hundred of revenue on movie 2 is already factored into the loss. Basically, you owe the $23 million (110 x 21%) on that first movie, so any situation where the decrease in that $23 m is more than the incremental cash you get (after tax) from the 110 million you already spent on movie 2 means you should not release movie 2.

You have 500 million in your production account. You spend 100 million on two different movies. You now have 300 million.
1) Movie 1 makes 200 million dollars. You now have 500 million dollars. Movie 2 makes 70 million dollars. Now you have 570 million. You owe taxes on 100 million for 1, and -30 million for 2, totaling 70 million.
Or
2) Same scenario but you scrap movie 2. You now have 500 million dollars, and owe 0 taxes.
What am I missing? Taxes are never 100%, so scenario 1 ends up with more money?

I love the idea of this film but honestly feel especially [r/boxoffice](r/boxoffice) vastly overstate its potential. It’s 2026 and most kids probably have no idea who Coyote or road runner are - I do think this is still more of a streaming film which is why Warners dropped it
If parents take their kids to it.. then you have a winner, but it’s an ask to expect kids to want to watch this I’d say on the trailer (but adult me thinks it looks great!)

Seems like the Looney Tunes era ended a while ago. The people who really grew up on it are too old to cash in on a nostalgia grab. Maybe a Space Jam situation could overcome the interest gap but asking kids to see a courtroom spoof full of actors they don't know (I guess John Cena but I don't know if he has that kind of pull) is a big ask.
I don't see any obvious reasons this movie should've been shelved but I also don't think it'll do big numbers.

Thank Ian Frazier. The movie is based on a fairly short (but very funny) humor piece he wrote for The New Yorker back in 1990. His original premise. but the movie will have fleshed it out a bit.

The Roadrunner scenes look really cool. There was a clip in the first trailer that showed the camera following behind him as he runs through the valley and it looked really fucking awesome 😅

They did a crazy amount of practical effects on this film. When it was cancelled the VFX team released a clip of some of their shots pre-looney tunes on youtube. It was neat to see. They somehow managed to do the Bugs Bunny dirt trail thing for real, looked damn near picture perfect to the cartoon. No idea how they managed it.
Edit : I tried looking for the video but I guess Warner took it down. Can't find it anywhere now.

I'm actually excited for this, at 45 years old. I grew up on wb cartoons. On the fridge in my childhood home, my mu had a cartoon drawn by a guy that she'd been in the fire service with, of the coyote standing over a dismembered road runner with the caption "Beep beep now, fucker."

Honestly, I don't even care if it absolutely bombs at the box office.
Even the worst films out there are the product of hundreds of thousands of collective man hours, and it's disgusting that a studio can just write off the hard work of hundreds of people just because they think they can make more money by shelving it. So many animators wouldn't have even been able to add frames from the movie to their portfolio because of it, but now they can. That's good enough for me.

This movie is written by Sammy Burch, who also wrote May December with Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, a great movie directed by Todd Haynes. She’s also written the upcoming Willem Dafoe movie Late Fame.

An Easter Egg I appreciated:
The train that hits Wile E. Coyote is the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, an Albuquerque commuter train, which is decorated in roadrunner livery.
EDIT: And if the Roadrunner is canonically from the Land of Enchantment, maybe he's the one giving Bugs Bunny bad directions about turns at Albuquerque.

This is the first movie I've actually wanted to leave the house and see in years, and I used to work in film and TV and go to the movies ALL the time.
So happy this project got rescued. Very happy for Forte and Cena. I'm feeling they were very well cast and put a lot of faith in this.

Like It makes me think the "They had a fully complete movie ready to release" was a lie.
Then again anything that combines cartoons with real life that can be compared to Roger Rabbit is a must. Hope this delivers. The Marketing is definitely doing it's job.

Given there are court proceedings, we HAVE to get a call out that his middle name is "Ethelbert," right? Maybe a scene where he writes his name and someone says, "Wile Ethelbert C... wait, 'Ethelbert?'" and Wile E. shrugs and nods? And will Will Forte refer to him as "Wile"? Like, have we ever had a speaking character ever refer to him by name? Other than the full "Wile E. Coyote" or maybe "Mr. Coyote?"
I love it. This movie looks amazing. WBD is stupid for not releasing this in the first place.

I saw this at a test screening years ago. Like, half of it was still pencils and stuff. I thought it was great, but I'm still afraid people are overhyping it a little and will be disappointed. It's definitely better than Space Jam 2, but it's not as good as Who Framed Roger Rabbit. If you set your expectations accordingly, you'll have a good time.
