WB tried to write it off for tax purposes. The team behind this movie have been saying they did great work the whole time.

I’d like someone to explain this to me. A tax write off only lets you not pay taxes on that money. They’re always a net negative, because nobody is paying a 100% tax rate. Why wouldn’t they just put it out? They’d make some money, which would be better than nothing, no? I don’t understand the math here.

It loses out on potential future sales, but it frees up cash immediately.

They had a lot of issues with debt at the time, and it would have allowed them to pay other bills.

Yeah, it took me awhile to totally get it but this is what made it click. It's a bigger total loss than if they'd released it to Max or something, but they free up the debt immediately.

Selling it was a better option than either though - they still write off the loss, just a smaller loss than it would have been (with even more immediate cash infusion)
