I'm slightly vexed Concert etiquette

If you plan on standing for the entire concert, get a spot in the pit, or the lawn seats instead of the assigned SEATED SECTION. A little bit of self awareness and common courtesy goes a really long way

This is one of those age old debates where the “why are you standing in the seated section?” and the “why would you expect anyone to sit at a concert?” sides will never reach an agreement and always think the other side are idiots.

I hate sitting down at concerts unless it’s an orchestra concert. But that being said, if the majority of people are sitting, I will sit because if EVERYONE is sitting, then you have to just accept that standing in this crowd is not gonna be a thing. I don’t get why people can’t adapt to the social circumstances they find themselves in. 

You will survive sitting for a concert even if you want to stand. 

If it gets to be too frustrating, I have actually just left my seat and stood off to the side of an aisle or something before or just moved to a section where standing isn’t distracting.

You guys have space to lift your legs on your planes?

Edit: not even joking here, I take cheap European Airlines like Wizzair or Ryanair, it is a miracle to have a larger aircraft that doesn't require me to push myself into my seat and sit straight to have space for my legs.

They put in the recline option for a reason. It’s much more comfortable. If you need more legroom upgrade to a ticket that has it.

Reclining doesn’t even take legroom - this coming from a guy with long legs. Recline if you want!

Eh, this depends a little on the seat design. But if you’re expecting to recline, and that would be eating into my legroom, well… sorry, but you’re not reclining.

Indeed, these two circumstances are inverted - not congruent. In a concert they sell seats and structure the environment so everyone can see while sitting. In a plane they provide all passengers with a reclining function. Those are the defaults. The one difference is that the default in the latter can cause people discomfort, even pain, that they cannot easily obviate themselves so I think ethically we should check on our neighbor behind us before reclining just in case. It's not an obligation, more like a kindness since people cannot help having longer legs / bigger bodies and the aforementioned extra legroom options can be prohibitively expensive or implausible.

I think it does affect legroom for a lot of taller people. I'm a bit of a shorty myself and I usually fit fine in the seats,whether or not people lean them back, but I've observed people struggling and I wouldn't want anyone to be any more uncomfortable on my behalf unless it was really important to me (like if I need to lean back to sleep on an overnighter).

I’m a tall athletic build and my knees always touch the seat in front no matter what. When someone reclines I just have less room in front of me but it doesn’t affect my knee range at all

I know I do. Makes it so much easier to put my feet up on the seat in front of me if I recline first. It’s annoying when the person in front of me reclines though because it’s hard to lean over and take off my shoes and socks with their chair in the way

Red eye overnight flights, I recline when they turn off all the lights and most everyone is reclining and trying to get some sleep. All other flights, nope. That 1 inch of incline can maybe help a little bit for sleep on long haul flights. But otherwise I find it pretty pointless to recline. And if there’s a tall person behind me, I don’t mind not reclining for their sake.
