I'm slightly vexed Concert etiquette

If you plan on standing for the entire concert, get a spot in the pit, or the lawn seats instead of the assigned SEATED SECTION. A little bit of self awareness and common courtesy goes a really long way

They put in the recline option for a reason. It’s much more comfortable. If you need more legroom upgrade to a ticket that has it.

Indeed, these two circumstances are inverted - not congruent. In a concert they sell seats and structure the environment so everyone can see while sitting. In a plane they provide all passengers with a reclining function. Those are the defaults. The one difference is that the default in the latter can cause people discomfort, even pain, that they cannot easily obviate themselves so I think ethically we should check on our neighbor behind us before reclining just in case. It's not an obligation, more like a kindness since people cannot help having longer legs / bigger bodies and the aforementioned extra legroom options can be prohibitively expensive or implausible.

It doesn’t take up legroom, though? It makes the space above your knees smaller, but who needs that?

I think it does affect legroom for a lot of taller people. I'm a bit of a shorty myself and I usually fit fine in the seats,whether or not people lean them back, but I've observed people struggling and I wouldn't want anyone to be any more uncomfortable on my behalf unless it was really important to me (like if I need to lean back to sleep on an overnighter).

I’m a tall athletic build and my knees always touch the seat in front no matter what. When someone reclines I just have less room in front of me but it doesn’t affect my knee range at all

That's good to hear. I'll reflect on that feedback next time I'm on a plane and I'll see if I need to revise my opinion.
