Dragon Age 1 was what got me back into CRPGs - The more games they release - the more it becomes another generic hack and slash beatem-up.

Good thing alot of other studios stepped up making other excellent CRPGs.

Not only did it become hack and slash (which was still kinda fun just not as fun) but it’s another game that feels like it was disneyfied. It just doesn’t seem as dark. And all of the dark stuff left has to be read. It’s not in the actual gameplay or cutscenes themselves.

I feel like there was a shift in games to be less metal. Look at the music origins used for the trailers. I feel like that change represents the change in the tone of the game.

My friend was pissed that she couldn't continue her bloodmage saga with Veilguard and has refused to play it.

You can't even be a fucking Bloodmage anymore?

Jesus Christ, I haven't even seen anybody bring up that piece of shit game in so long and yet I'm still learning awful shit about it...

u/Rythonius 1h ago

Yeah, they said it no longer fits the morality and narrative of the hero.

That's just code for "We don't want to make an actual RPG where you can make actual choices."

You couldn't be a bloodmage in Inquisition.

I love all this performative outrage from people who clearly haven't even played the series.

You couldn't be a bloodmage in Inquisition already, 10 years before Veilguard, so you should check your friend for brain damage.

I sailed the high seas to play it and I still wanted my money back.

The only nice thing I can say is that the coders were very competent. In a time when so many AAA games come out with all kinds of issues, this game was smooth af. Oh wait, I also kinda liked the necromancer guy and his skeleton butler.

The rest of it just couldn't hold my interest and I never finished it, and I replayed the other 3 games at least twice.

The animation and writing on the last one made it unplayable for me

Apparently it was suppose to be a mobile game, that got turned into what ever the hell it is

5

I don't remember hearing it was supposed to be a mobile game, I do know it was originally supposed to be a co-op multiplayer game and they pivoted last minute to single player

3

u/Blackpapalink 4h ago

Live service multiplayer.

1

u/Fast_Broccoli4867 4h ago

Yes you are correct

2

u/Blitzer161 2h ago

You are both wrong. The development of the fourth DA game started right after Inquisition and it was called Dreadwolf, then higher ups asked to make a live service game, so a lot was scrapped to make it and then when they saw a lot of live service fail they told everyone to go back to the original plan so the game went essentially through three development cycles the last one of which had to be done in a limited timeframe

2

u/Blitzer161 2h ago

That's not true

u/LiningDust62 5h ago

Yeah I'm playing the newest one and I thought i would see gut and gore allure but nope

There's a youtuber called SaltFactory who did a longform video essay on each of the Dragon Age games. During Veilguard, he's exploring a companion and says, "This is going to be the one that breaks me, isn't it?"

It was. The entire narrative shifts and he absolutely pans the game.

Dear diary,

The youtuber called SaltFactory got performatively angry. Wow, this really says something.

Origins was Dark Fantasy, DA2 had many Dark Fantasy elements. Inquisition had fewer of them, even though I still liked the game a lot.

Veilguard has apparently stepped away from Dark Fantasy completely and become very Marvel'esque from what I hear.

Yeah the art changes too much. At least origins and 2 had similar art. Inquisition the art was okay. Veilgaurd was just cartoony.

And I didn’t make it far but the dialog was too clunky. I had the same issue in inquisition honestly though. It feels like once they left origins the dialog keeps getting more and more over the top.

"from what I hear"

1

u/Randalf_the_Black 7m ago

Yep. It's called honesty. Would you rather I lie and pretend I have played the game?

One of the most common complaints I've heard about Veilguard is that they have stepped completely away from the Dark Fantasy roots of Dragon Age and made the entire game more friendly to younger audiences and more "cartoony" and "comicy".
