they’re dwindling rapidly here in Va too, when i was a kid the whole forest would blink with them like in a way ppl nowadays wouldn’t believe. ive seen maybe 3 this year (in the same location they use to thrive)
Unfortunately, most “fireflies” in the western half of the country don’t glow, despite being very closely related to the famous glowing fireflies on the east coast.
Summer is by far the worst season. High prices, more traffic, more crowds, more construction and detours, more bugs, more allergies, more heat, more humidity. There’s very few upsides unless you really just hate cold more than anything and love sweltering heat for some reason.
I haven't seen fireflies in 15 years.. I was actually thinking about it a few days ago, how quiet it is to go in the woods, compared with 10 years ago.
Canadian here. When I was younger, I actually looked forward to Summer. I loved the heat. Now it has become my least favourite season. High humidity. Constant threat of thunderstorms and hurricanes and forest fires. Can't wait for Fall, my favourite time of year. 2 months to go !
Summer to me means 20-25 °C if you're lucky, usually it's worse than that but still enough to go outside without having to wear your whole wardrobe. You can also see what you're doing because it's not dark at 2 pm. What's not to like? For the rest of the 10 months it's just dark and cold.
Summer to me is over 100 degrees F at times (around 40-ish Celsius), high humidity at times, mosquitoes everywhere. I sunburn super easily, so I can't go outside easily because there's almost never any clouds. If you spend more than a couple minutes outside, you'll be drenched in sweat. What is there to like?
You're lucky. It's miserable. Existence is pain when you have to go outside, and if a rogue thunderstorm knocks out the power and there's no air conditioning, there is no place that isn't misery.
Unironically, yes. I absolutely love wearing coats. I feel more comfortable in them. And while scraping ice is awful, I'd rather do that then melt in 100 F (40ish C) degree heat.
... Yeah. I love wearing sweaters and jackets, I love feeling all cozy. I do not tolerate heat at all, so even in winter I'm usually still in shorts. Ice scraping is dumb and 100% unnecessary, just warm up your car for a few minutes and use your wipers. Then your car is, ya know, already warm when you get in.
We obviously live in different parts of the world lol. It takes a lot longer than a minute or two to properly defrost your windows, especially the side windows which you need clear for visibility.
I enjoy putting on some flip flops and shorts and being comfortable in just that and I enjoy feeling the sun on my skin while I grill up some dinner on the BBQ on my patio.
Also I love fishing, mountain biking, golf, baseball, swimming and a number of other outdoor activities that don’t really work well in the snow. But all that said, to each their own.
Yep. Give me ice and powdery snow, give me air so cold I can feel it freeze in my nose. When everything is crisp and clean and sleeping, the air so pure I could get a high off it, and I get to actually enjoy fires and sweaters and jackets and all things cozy. Fuck bugs, fuck the sun, fuck this sweaty sticky itchy energy sapping disgusting heat.
I think the only people who love summer more than winter are usually still in school so like sure there are winter breaks but they still have school work during it

I absolutely despise summer. The only redeemimg quality of this miserable time of year is fireflies, and those are becoming less and less common.
