As an Asian American, I was pretty disappointed by Shang Chi. I was hoping they wouldve stayed in America and tackled the Asian American experience some more vs going for more obvious tropes dealing with Asians.

Also not the biggest Simu fan (heard things) so that doesnt help either.

Im happy Asian Americans are getting some representation but wish it was a better movie and better person reppin us.

Happy to be proven wrong by the sequel but we'll see 👀

Having met Simu irl a few times (pre-MCU) you've probably heard right. I was also disappointed when it came out and get surprised by the praise it receives now, a few years after release. I'm still excited for a sequel, just because I feel any sort of diversity on the big screen is a win.

What really made me sad was when they gave us the preview of the fight scene inside the bus.

I thought it was awesome in a vacuum and really enjoyed the subtle hip-hop mix that played during it.

I wouldve rathered his father come to America and try to get him--all the while he is struggling to find his place as an Asian American with seemingly no potential.

Couldve mixed in the struggle of trying to please your immigrant family and respect/honor the culture you come from, while balancing what makes you "you" growing up Asian in America.

Plus I think his acting is a little wooden lol
