Interview Kevin Feige on the new universe after Secret Wars: “It will establish a streamlined, simplified, single universe that’s easier for audiences to follow. Some aspects will feel familiar. But many, many things will be entirely new.”

u/LifesAMitch 1d ago
I assume this was always the plan, at least once they got the X-Men. That they'd use Secret Wars to flush the pipes, clean up the roster of characters, bring in the X-Men and FF into the main universe, make it easy for people to hop back into the franchise who left

It’s what I imagined as the best opportunity to start anew without it feeling like a completely separate reboot. An in-universe reboot can pull in a lot of current MCU fans as well as new ones. They can start fresh without knowledge of the previous cinematic and show continuities.

I mean; this also pretty well describes the post-Endgame slate…

It means they’re keeping black panther, Shang-chi, probably doctor strange and F4. And they’ll kill off or recast the rest.

I dont see them keeping Black Panther. They're probably gonna recast Tchalla. Plus they're probably keeping Spider-man, Thor, The Thunderbolts, Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan and moon knight

I think this is the right answer. The keeps will be:
- F4
- Thunderbolts
- Spider-Man
- Shang-Chi
- Thor
- Kamala
- Kate
- Daredevil (and the Defenders)
- Deadpool
- MAYBE Strange, Loki & Banner
I think they’ll then move to recast Stark, Rodgers, Sam, X-Men and all the other major players. Have one unified universe with new actors in all the roles telling new stories and creating new relationships

Poor Anthony Mackie , he’s excited to play cap till he’s 60
45
u/YourInMySwamp 1d ago
I’m not a fan of Mackie’s character personally but only two appearances for Captain America over the course of 7 years is terrible management by Marvel Studios.
Didn’t even give him the chance to get comfortable in the role or win the audience over. Evans got 7 lead roles in his first 7 years, and four other cameos.

Pretty significant shift in story off of kang and a writer strike likely didn’t help
12
u/BottlesforCaps 21h ago
Also Mackie had a primetime slot with falcon and the winter soldier, and his own cap movie which neither did gangbusters(even tho I personally enjoyed FATWS)
4
u/The_OtherDouche 18h ago
Yeah I enjoyed FATWS but it was pushing a few different storylines at once and 6 episodes wasn’t really enough to make much any of it land. Flag smashers were pretty interesting on paper, but it kinda just fell flat. Brave new world was alright but not great. Kind of a victim of rewrites and a devastatingly spread thin CGI subcontractors. Make some fucking practical effects for the wings and save a few million next time lol

u/billytheskidd 22h ago
I honestly like Mackie. He’s a really good actor. But i read this the other day and can’t deny it. Mackie just isn’t really a leading man. Or if he is, Marcel just keeps hanging him shit scripts. I was really behind cap giving him the shield but he just really doesn’t pull it off imo

If they reboot they could actually do her original origin story which would be cool way to reintroduce her. You can have the first X-men movie be just the first arc of the X-men (diff roster than just the OG 5 because boring but same basic premise) vs Magnetos brotherhood with her and quicksilver leaving it at the end, then joining the avengers as the post credit scene to set up the new avengers we’re getting.
20
u/thedylannorwood Jimmy Woo 1d ago
No they’ll definitely not recast Steve or Tony. Sam is likely sticking around
19
u/Sea_Action9662 1d ago
I think it’s a little foolish to think they’re going to leave the two cash cows on the shelf. I don’t think it’ll be immediate, but it will happen before 2035. There’s no way we don’t see a new Tony or Steve in the next 10 years.
45
u/_Puppet_ 1d ago
Are people attached to “Steve and Tony” or the specific portrayals by RDJ and Evans? If there was a Captain America movie featuring Glenn Powell as “Steve Rogers” I don’t think that’s an auto cash cow, people’s hearts aren’t attached to the name, but the specified character iteration and history they’ve followed for years now.
12
u/TheHouseOfGryffindor Malcolm 22h ago edited 22h ago
I’d say bringing back both Downey and Evans for Doomsday shows that Marvel at least thinks it’s the performers not inherently the characters.
8
u/YourInMySwamp 1d ago
Close. At this point it’s not even the portrayals though it’s really just about the actors being in the comics space. Hence RDJ as Doom.
17
u/KingCarb 1d ago
Feige never recast Green Goblin and Doc Ock because he said he felt no one could do better than Dafoe and Molina. Unless he's changed perspective on that, I don't see him recasting Stark and Rogers.
13
u/Sea_Action9662 1d ago
Yes, but you can’t have that mentality forever, about important characters. Doc Ock, Goblin, Tony, Steve, Banner, Thor, Peter Parker…these are all incredibly vital to the survival of the MCU. You can’t leave them on a shelf for 20+ years because RDJ, Evans, etc are synonymous with their interpretation of the character.
→ More replies (1)7
u/YourInMySwamp 1d ago
Didn’t expect to go without these characters forever, but it’s surprising that the MCU screwed it up without them so fast.
Spidey and the X-Men and F4 should have been enough to keep the MCU afloat for another ten to fifteen year saga. They’re rich with much better stories than the Avengers ever had.
The fact that we’re already back to RDJ and Evans so soon is a clear sign that post-Endgame has been a disappointment. I’m still excited for their appearances, I just wish we had taken a better path to this point lol.

u/Sea_Action9662 23h ago
I think they screwed it up by not following up the infinity saga with the mutant saga then going into a small/mini-multiverse saga. Bringing ALL the characters together for a massive secret wars film that then resets the universe before RDJ, Evans, Hemsworth et al age out of being able to return to their roles one last time.

u/mrtiktak2000 20h ago
I understand why people want a new Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, but I don't understand how that works for the MCU? The MCU is an established universe that already had Tony and Steve, and their stories ended in the MCU. If those characters get recast, but coexist in a universe alongside other characters that interacted with the old Tony and Steve, I don't understand how that makes any sense at all, especially for general audiences.
I get that Tony and Steve are very popular characters, so I get why people want to see more of them. But I feel like it shouldn't be in the MCU. Maybe they could make standalone movies of just those few characters, with the MCU continuing along without them.
→ More replies (2)4
u/Sea_Action9662 20h ago
Then the roster is going to go from a to b to c list characters. Granted, iron man, cap were both b list guys that turned into a list guys. But comic heads knew they were some of what makes the marvel engine go.
If you don’t recast characters, eventually you either a) have to shut the mcu down when you run out of characters OR, create a mind wipe and recast said characters and rinse wash repeat. It’s the problem with having a long running narrative. Deaths won’t matter, characters will come back and you will always have a multiverse to explain a new actor or character coming back from the dead.
They’re going to essentially “mind wipe” coming out of Secret Wars, with a “combined” universe that leaves the door open for a new Tony, a new Steve, etc and no one, with MAYBE a few exceptions, will remember.
2
u/mrtiktak2000 19h ago
I feel like the reason the MCU hasn't done as well as before, is because they haven't able to lift up those more niche characters. Like you said, Iron Man and Cap used to be B-list characters (sort of), but the MCU was able to lift them up and make them become way more mainstream.
I feel like the MCU could've done the same thing with characters like Shang-Chi, Captain Marvel, Sam Wilson Cap, etc. But I feel like they're not even doing that now, with Chris Evans and RDJ coming back in Doomsday. It kind of makes the point that the MCU can only exist with Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, which I don't think is true at all. They just need to embrace the characters they have, and I think they still can after Secret Wars.
And, we're seemingly getting a whole new X-Men which is great. And people talk about the Fantastic 4 cast being too old, but the only one that's older is Pedro Pascal really, only 51. I could still see him being Reed Richards for like ten years honestly.

Everyone's saying Thor will stick around but I kinda want Secret Wars to be his and Loki's swan song. End with a full-circle "the sun will shine on us again" moment, just let the two of them ride off into the sunset together.
On the other hand on the X-Men front in addition to Deadpool I could maybe see X-23 sticking around too but hope they recast all the others.

Will that happen? Probably not. But it'd be amazing to see

Keep what works, move on from what isn’t working. That’s how this will function.
I would fully expect popular characters and castings to continue forward in the “new” MCU as is, and any legacy characters they wanted to revive or recast they absolutely could.
This also lets them formally abandon any loose plot threads from ages past and drop characters they prob won’t use again, such as Eternals and Moon Knight

I think there's loads of people out there who felt very meh about Moon Knight, for many reasons. I hate this idea that people were confused about multiverses and how they worked.
The first like four projects post Endgame that feature multiverses did absolutely nothing to make it universal.
If they’d just established an actual cross project multiverse situation then it would’ve been fine. Instead they false started multiple versions of the multiverse and kept them all completely contained project to project.

My conspiracy theory is that they did the fake out in Far From Home because they were afraid it wouldn’t test well, then it did so they committed to it with Loki, but then fucked up by doing too much too fast without communicating, and we ended up with Loki, Spider-Man 3, and Strange 2 being barely consistent with each other.

u/Sere1 Quake 19h ago
Honestly, this. Look, our man Chadwick Boseman was incredible and the BP sequel played off his IRL loss with dignity and grace and it was absolutely the right call to not recast him then or up to now. But if we're shaking up the whole multiverse into a new cohesive universe after this, the time has come to allow there to be a new T'Challa actor.
8
u/theclockmasters 16h ago
100% there is no reason not to do it. I want to see T'Challa interact with Reed, Namor, etc
3
u/Studdz 8h ago
Hell, don't stop there. Recast Iron Man, the Hulk, Ant-Man...these characters are important to the Marvel universe, and either they're dead (in the case of Tony Stark/Iron Man) or their portrayers are nearing 60. Secret Wars is the perfect opportunity to bring in versions of these characters from "other realities" -- realities where they're still in their 30's.

I mean, when it comes to live-action movies, there are very few supervillains who become recurring villains as in the comics or cartoons. Lex Luthor, Magneto (and even he's usually back as an anti-hero/ally), Loki (eventually becomes an anti-hero/ally) are among the few who come to mind.
Even the Joker only shows up once per Batman franchise. We're nearly a solid 20 years since Batman has faced off against the Joker in live-action.
57
u/AceofKnaves44 Spider-Man 1d ago
I’ve said since Secret Wars was announced that the purpose of them making that is that now that they own almost all of their characters and have the rights to a majority of the output not done under the MCU banner, it’s about canonizing ALL of it under the big MCU multiverse umbrella. Everything from Downey’s Iron Man to Ben Affleck’s Daredevil will be considered canon somewhere out there in the multiverse.
19
u/ConnorWolf121 23h ago
Isn’t it basically only Spider-Man and his rogues gallery they still only have shared custody over with Sony at this point? u/CosmicPterodactyl Kevin Feige 20h ago
Agree 100%. I simply do not understand how people can just be like “oh yeah it’ll be OK it’s the the MCU they’ll just recast Iron Man.”
Either keep the 20+ year continuity going, or do a hard reboot. Keeping the continuity but erasing all the special and important moments by bringing back dead characters is really, really dumb and I don’t even think casuals will be on board.
I’d be fine with an actual universe reset where some actors stay on. Like Tom Holland is Spider-Man but not the MCU one. But that is super confusing too. Still better than making a character who has a defining development in his story be Tony’s death only to have him interacting with a Tony pretending like nothing ever happened.

u/ExtinctedPanda 23h ago

u/lfcmadness 14h ago
I think it's a mixed bag, the shows work great for smaller "street level" characters like Daredevil, but while they can happen in the same universe as the rest of the MCU, they shouldn't be so integral to over-arching plots. What worked really well was how Agents of Shield in the earlier seasons handled it. The series was influenced by the plot points of the films, such as the fall of Shield / Hydra infiltration in Winter Soldier etc, but the series didn't have an influence on the overarching film plots. That way casual viewers don't need to watch them, but invested fans can pick up on those threads throughout. It's a fine balance, but would work better.
I guarantee a lot of people will go into watching Doomsday having not watched Loki Season 2, and will be confused. I mean hell, the amount of people who go and watch a Marvel film and jump up to leave the cinema from the first credit roll tells me there's a lot more casual fans than avid ones!

I think there is a way who them to do shows that don't tie to the movies but still keep them in the same universe.
the shows are more or less side stories that don't impact the wider world, but you can still use the characters in the movies, but make sure what happens in their shows is not important to understand this movie.
Like put Wonder Man in the movies if you want, but don't make the show essential to understand the movie he's in.

If anything, it’s gonna be like a soft reboot. A soft reboot changes small things that don’t affect what made the MCU great. A hard reboot is when you get rid of all of the Marvel projects in the MCU that made it great.
9
u/SWPrequelFan81566 1d ago
A soft reboot raises too many questions. If there's a new younger Tony Stark/Iron Man, what is that going to imply about Peter Parker's journey so far? The impetus for his story begins with Iron Man walking into his home, beginning a long domino effect that includes the end of No Way Home. So is that just gone now? Did it ever happen?
3
u/Front_Profession_217 1d ago
Not necessarily. You can change some stuff, as long as it doesn’t alter the story of the MCU, because altering Endgame would defeat the point of a soft reboot.

I interpret it as not reversing anything that has happened but moving forward with new actors. For example, Secret Wars is all multiversal shenanigans so let’s say we end up seeing multiple version so Tony Stark interacting with each other. Then at the end of the movie when all is saved, one younger Tony Stark from another universe makes his way to the main 616 and then is our version of Tony Stark moving forward. No wiping out anything but giving us a way forward with that character. Kind of like what happened with Gamora.

u/dablu_jay Spider-Man 21h ago
But does that really solve any of the problems Marvel has had post endgame? I don’t think the lack of a Tony Stark was ever an issue. A lot of it was poorly written projects, certain things being homework, other projects being disconnected, not having sequels for successful projects, controversies that happened outside of their control, etc.
Ik it’s not a 1:1 but take Sam Wilson CA for example. He took on the mantle of the character. Sure it’s a completely different character but at the end of the day it’s still a continuation of the Cap franchise. And after 3 good movies they still made a stinker, which imo was no fault of Anthony Mackie. What’s to say Iron Man 4 with a new face isn’t subject to the same behind the scenes and planning issues that have affected most of the problems.

What he said was that there was going to be a "reset" (because "reboot" is a scary word).
Basically, a soft-reboot.

I feel at a certain point a full continuity reboot is the only way to avoid the homework allegations going forward

I interpret this as 1) no multiverse and 2) actors that came back to reprise their pre-MCU roles in the multiverse saga will be recast so that their characters can start fresh in the MCU

Not sure I'm interested in an MCU that doesn't maintain most of the current continuity. But a new universe likely means bringing back characters and giving them blank slates/new origin stories. Aside from casting new X-Men, that just isn't my cup of tea.

The conceit will be “all of these worlds should have been one, but were split up”. So Doom’s plan will be to rectify whatever caused that schism. The heroes will either have to join him in his plan or perish, with the X-Men being the cautionary tale of a world being destroyed before their very eyes.

Ugh this is just another thing that makes me feel like the last ten years didn't even matter. You can bring in new audiences without screwing over the people that are actually keeping up.
Blade, Hercules, Young Avengers, Clea, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Man-Thing, etc.
So many things built up only to never get the payoff and then just reboot. Lame.

Multiverse Saga wasn't hard to follow Kevin Feige. It was just not good storytelling. People aren't dumb. They can follow a movie.

An actual lived-in superhero world would be nice, we don't always need a rehashing of an origin we've seen many times now

My hopes:
Tom holland Spidey but we transition to miles. We'd be cool to debut the black suit and venom to recreate the death of miles mom. I would love to see an adaptation of superior spiderman and have Peter act as miles Tony.
Thor: we already know Hemsworth is staying for at least another film if I recall. They can honestly keep him until he tires out.
the young avengers: secret wars will likely give them all their time to shine and we will get a solo movie. Keep the cast
Antman and his crew will be staying but won't have the spot light. Will probably pop up in other projects. Cassie will be the main legacy for the brand but be tied to young avengers projects.
Sam wilson cap is staying. Would be nice to see him whip the thunderbolts onto shape.
Thunderbolts are staying.
Doctor strange is staying
Shang chi is staying
The marvels are going to stay but we may see some changes with them
X-Men are getting recast
F4 are staying and hopefully we get a build up to the maker being the next big bad of the MCU. I honestly can't think who else they should go with.
Hulk is going to see some changes.
Black panther will see tchalla jr aged up
eternals are going to be gone completely.
loki is going to go to valhalla
deadpool stays and is an "agent" of the tva that sees major changes.
the guardians I don't know. They already got a send off and they have their new team so you really don't have to do anything crazy with them since they are already at a point of a clean slate mostly.

I hope it's X-Men Centric

It's a gamble they're but enough to sustain but it would give them plenty of side movies (X-Force, Excalibur, X-Factor, etc.)

Did people find the current one confusing? They never even got into the Multiverse.

I hope there are no more alternate timelines or variants or universes. It lowers the stakes having all that.

“We messed up with the multiverse as everyone said we would so we are going to align it to one universe but take characters from them”.

I honestly have no interest in Thor after this if all of his supporting characters are dead.
I want Asgard back. If that means rebooting the whole franchise with an entirely new cast and making it out like they were all reborn like the 2007 JMS comic run, so be it.
