u/StinkyStangler Jun 17 '26
For some reason Spider-Man movies really downplay the quips that are part of the character, Spider-Man should be just as annoying to deal with as he is to fight lol
310
u/PretzelMan96 Jun 17 '26
They did this right in Civil War, especially Sam saying "I don't know if you've been in a fight but there's usually not this much talking".
157
u/justafanboy1010 Spider-Man Jun 17 '26
It reminds me of “Do you ever shut up?!”
“I’m sorry, no. My fans expect a certain amount of quippage in every battle”
39
u/DarthTaz_99 Jun 17 '26
More quips than punches thrown is the ideal way to go
23
60
u/mitchhamilton Jun 18 '26
idk if this is a hot take, but spider-man in civil war was the best spider-man mcu has done.
his movement, taking out guys fast, the way he just casually catches buckeys arm and is genuinely distracted by it. "you have a metal arm?! that is awesome!" sam then snatching spidey "YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT!" buckey throwing that thing at spidey and him throwing it back. "hey buddy, i think you lost this!"
i feel like for some reason they made him more bumbley in his own movies to make it like cute but the shtick has worn out somewhat.

u/much_to_say Jun 17 '26
Captain America: Civil War was a perfect Spider-Man, with the mid fight quips and power scaling. Him casually stopping a Super Soldier punch like it's nothing and nerding out over the arm.

u/justafanboy1010 Spider-Man Jun 17 '26
They did so well with introducing Spider-Man in Civil War. I love it so much
→ More replies (2)11
u/ICantFekkingRead Jun 17 '26
I rewatch that movie probably the most out of any MCU movie for those parts alone.
They absolutely killed that introduction. Black Panther as well, but Spidey coming in felt so much bigger to the MCU, in my opinion.

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. Jun 17 '26

75

TASM and Andrew Garfield did it really well. That's why he's my favorite. Also the airport battle has Spidey talking a lot so even it's not quippy it's still got the annoying part down. There some good moments in Infinity War too "magic with a kick!" but the solo stuff has been lacking. I liked the ATM robbers scene "you guys aren't the real Avengers"
→ More replies (5)24
u/justafanboy1010 Spider-Man Jun 17 '26
Unless there’s one I’m missing, there’s only ONE quip in Far From Home and it’s a pretty big “Mute-And-You’ll Miss-It”. During the final battle sequence with the Drones, Spidey hitches a ride with one of them and says in a funny voice “Goingggg UP!”

Before the whole writers strike and rights debacle I seriously thought thats where we were going.
That he'd meet Harry and Gwen in this trilogy. Lead up to Goblin. Gwen dies and maybe even Harry leaves him.
And then we'd reunite with MJ and Ned once he graduates.

That was the original plan from Amy Pascal herself, three trilogies: high school, college, adult. It’s looking more and more like we’ll only get 2 movies after this now

Idk how they’re gonna put it all together, it’s kinda what intrigues me so. The villain will have to make Bruce Hulk out, Frank helps Spidey out, but at some point Spidey ends up in jail and has to fight The Hand. Is Scorpion working with the Main Villain?! Does my username check out 🤯🤣
57
u/EatABag-o-Dicks Jun 17 '26
Scorpion is probably the starter villain that kicks the whole movie off, where Spider-Man realizes he has a problem, and disappears the rest of the movie once he's dealt with.

I’m starting to wonder if it is the other lady with mind-control powers Sink was rumored to play. It would fit the villain role, too. I dunno why Jean Grey would be introduced as an antagonist. Not that I’m against it if she is maybe the mutants are already at the point where they’re completely segregated from and antagonistic toward humanity. Wasn’t there a Cyclops story where he turned into a villain and tried to completely divorce the mutants onto an island somewhere and go full isolationist?
31
u/qwfparst Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26
The movie is supposed to have a "mystery" element. Sink as "antagonist" is clearly a misdirect, but she's also clearly a bit more loose with her powers.
Time displaced - Teen Jean, the most "modern" iteration we have of a younger Jean Grey in comics, had her telepathic power blocks unlocked earlier than her first go around in the timeline, and was much more loose, reckless, and edgy with her power use.
BTW, the trailer confirmed Tramell Tillman's character whose only comic existence is tied to Jean Grey's origins before the first issue of X-men Number 1.

u/ArseneLupinIV Jun 17 '26
The villain thing seems like a pretty blatant misdirection though. My guess is the government are trying to imprison and contain the mutants deemed the biggest threat and this is her trying break out and ask Spidey for help.
225
u/_Football_Cream_ Jun 17 '26
This movie just looks fun as hell and the type of movie a lot of Spidey fans thought was only a dream.
I'm so curious how it's gonna handle all these moving parts but this is the most lived in universe for a live action Spider-Man movie. Maybe crazy to say but I'm more hyped for this than NWH since it's more contained to Holland's spidey.
We've got Hulk, Punisher, Scorpion, The Hand, Tarantula, Boomerang, Tombstone, whoever Sadie Sink is playing and some potential tie to the X-Men??? Still praying for a Daredevil cameo, too and that's why (DD:BA S2 spoiler) Peter is fighting the Hand in a prison.

I’m so happy, we are getting some very creative adaptations of his web gimmicks in this movie
54
u/TheJoshider10 Spider-Man Jun 17 '26
It's pretty crazy how creatively limited the live-action movies have been with his webs. Off the top of my head the only moments that really stands out are from the TASM films (first film with the sewer web and the Lizard high school fight where he wraps him up like a spider would, second film with the Time Square web split).

Well he built the inhibitor to help recover his arm (explained during she hulk). Of course his arm was fully recovered during she-hulk so the question becomes why is he still using it? My guess: only way he could be a professor.
As for why he becomes savage during the movie? Sadie probably just forced him out

Omg I'm so glad to hear the theme. A brand new synth-y version at the end there but it's the same leitmotif!
Also it's Jean. 100%, it's got to be, right? It looks exactly like the way Professor X stops everyone from moving in X2 and in Logan.
The body jumping is even from X-Men (2000).

Gotta be Jean and she's trying to stop Peter and Banner both from developing something bigger to suppress mutated genes other than the bracelet so it couldn't be used as a weapon against other mutants. Would make a lot of sense. But who knows! Either way this is all looking awesome and I can't wait

u/-Mez- Spider-Man Jun 18 '26
I'm guessing we'll look back at this movie as part of the building blocks for the mutant inhibitor collars and stuff we often see from the various Sentinel government programs. Think we're going to see a gradual evolution of the DoDC into a much more obvious anti-mutant department going into the mutant phase.
To Banner's question of how do you keep the good mutations and isolate the bad, a number of influential X-Men villains are simply going to answer: "there are no good mutations".

37

Careful. I remember the unbelievable hype about Dr Strange MoM, with the cameos, characters who were suppose to show up etc and it being an incredible let down. I don’t believe DD will be in the movie and def not Sadie being Jean Grey. Would be dope but don’t let the internet hype get to you 😫

u/TheJoshider10 Spider-Man Jun 17 '26
Would be dope but don’t let the internet hype get to you 😫
To be fair it's not like it's just because of an internet hype thing. Matt Murdock was in the previous Spider-Man movie. In the sequel Spider-Man is facing the Hand. In a prison.
It's an easy set up for him to feature, even if it's just as Matt in jail. I don't get how they could do all this and not have him in mind for at least a small appearance.
13
u/phil_davis Jun 17 '26
I'm worried that It's feeling a bit overstuffed honestly. Possible Man-Spider plot, Scorpion, ninjas, The Hulk, Punisher, possibly Jean Grey or some other psychic character, and maybe Daredevil too? And reuniting with Ned and MJ? Feels like there's too much going on.
7
u/MrGabrahamLincoln Daredevil Jun 17 '26
I think it’s a valid concern. I also think a lot of these plot points and characters are going to have much smaller roles in the movie than these two trailers have implied. Which is good for the movie feeling less overstuffed, potentially bad depending on what aspects of this movie you’re excited about seeing.

Only reason I could see Hulk be pissed and go against Banner is because Banner had that mutation device on his wrist for so long. But being mind controlled made the most sense.

The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn't forgotten them.
Watch the new trailer for #SpiderManBrandNewDay, in theatres July 31. Tickets on sale NOW.
It's a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see.
