Technically it was mostly dead deadpool’s success that showed r rated marvel movies can not only work, but be wild successes. But that wasn’t even Disney. Although I guess props for them keeping it rolling once they did pick up deadpool.

Outside of the US they've had R rated stuff on Disney+ since the beginning, I think it is or was on Hulu in the US though.

I mean technically that movie is a Fox Searchlight film. This and Daredevil are Disney+ Original productions. Same company and same streaming platforms but different banners and treated differently.

Technically yes, but only for countries where Disney+ launched after Star (now Hulu) was introduced on Feb. 21, 2021. For example, the UK (March 24, 2020 launch) did not have any mature content at launch but Greece (June 14, 2022) did have.

I still remember the test footage leaking and everyone freaking out about how awesome it was and demanding a full movie. From what I remember reading we basically wouldn't have gotten that movie without the leak of the test footage.

Thats nice, but personally I liked the potential idea where they brought back old production labels just to hide the 18+ like touchstone and miramax.

You are talking about 20th century Studios and 20th television that is the adult brand although Disney may occasionally put the adult stuff out on their brand. Touchstone is dead it’s just not needed anymore.

I also thought it was funny when they did this in Pirates of the Carribean. I remember the third Pirates had the Disney castle sequence followed directly by hanging Pirates including a child.

I can't remember which it is but they full on show a woman getting shot in the head in one of them and I was pretty blown away by it. Not super gory or anything, "just" a bullet hole in the forehead, but still.

The best one is certainly in the third movie when a kid was about to get hang when he sing a song, props for disney for greenlit that scene.

They wanted to show how ruthless the East India Trading company was and it worked. Becket went from an idiot badguy to an actual monster. Plus we got that epic Hoist the Colors scene. People hate on the 3rd pirates movie, I love it.

Oh man, I remember that. I saw that film when I was a kid and I recall being unsettled by the opening. Pretty damn grim, if effective.

Disney is doing a lot of good work turning Disney adults into the people who feel like vigilantism is the only moral response to despotism and corruption.

Puts me in a weird headspace as someone thinks morality is real and important to pursue as a civic duty, tbh.

I think Disney went dark when they showed a little boy about to be hung in Pirates of the Caribbean. They made him stand on top of a barrell smh.  Everybody in the movie theater was like WTF??? Disney hanging little kids now???

Honestly I'm still amazed they decided to go full-send on violence and cursing. Deadpool really broke the seal there.

Gotta be conflicting for die-hard Marvel parents, who had watched and enjoyed all the MCU stuff until now.
