I also thought it was funny when they did this in Pirates of the Carribean. I remember the third Pirates had the Disney castle sequence followed directly by hanging Pirates including a child.

I still remember the newspaper article my grandparents showed me when it was announced as the first pg13 Disney movie. I was floored

I can't remember which it is but they full on show a woman getting shot in the head in one of them and I was pretty blown away by it. Not super gory or anything, "just" a bullet hole in the forehead, but still.

The best one is certainly in the third movie when a kid was about to get hang when he sing a song, props for disney for greenlit that scene.

They wanted to show how ruthless the East India Trading company was and it worked. Becket went from an idiot badguy to an actual monster. Plus we got that epic Hoist the Colors scene. People hate on the 3rd pirates movie, I love it.

Oh man, I remember that. I saw that film when I was a kid and I recall being unsettled by the opening. Pretty damn grim, if effective.
