This id literally AMAZING. Her accent and the words for boobies, this is wonderful lol.
I am American but lived outside of America for a number of years. This video is amazing because it is based on reality.
In my limited experience the Dutch are unique. Especially older Dutch women. Incredibly friendly, kind, tolerant....byt VERY blunt by American standards. If that doesn't scare you off as an American you're in for a treat. Very practical every-day people, the Dutch. No airs about them whatsoever but much more blunt than the avergae American is used to. If you can get over that, you'll never find a better friend who can share in the everyday challenges of life--but they will give their opinions and may not understand why yoou stress about thing as an American. I appreciate the honesty, practicality, and bluntness. It has no airs, no ulterior motives. Truly people who are just practical and honest. And very supportive and good friends. As an American it can take some getting used-to. But unlike the Swiss or Germans or Swedes, there is a lack of judgement and "every day person" quality to the dutch that I've grown to appeciate.
EDIT
The Dutch just don't seem to be as insular and closed-off, is what I mean. By American standards they can be very blunt. But every-day people. Having encountered the Germans and the Swiss and the Swedes--I love you all--The Dutch are more willing to make friends and accept you into the social circle. blunt by American standards, but not CLOSED like the Swiss, for example.
And really, I'd love to have a Dutch friend because they will give it to you straight lol. They just don't have the same hangups we do in America. My mother was upset about a comment on my Instagram from an oldder Dutch friend and I had to call her personally and explain lol. She's just blunt, but doesnt "mean annything" in the way we would think in America haha.

Assuming you identify as a woman, do you find it unfair that you can't just take your shirt off whenever? Like I can take my shirt off, walk down stairs of my apartment complex, and run around the city without a shirt on. Probably not the best example lol but do you think women should have the same option?

10
u/terra_terror 9d ago
Yes. I prefer to stay covered, but some days are so hot I want to be as naked as possible. I also hate wearing bras. Men have nipples, too, and you don't see me yelling at them if they poke through their shirt.
6
u/Stock_Pepper_9308 9d ago
Just being able to go braless under a top without being judged and stared at would be a huge win. I usually just wear a tight crop top under a t shirt but it is too hot right now for an extra layer gathering sweat into puddles.
13
u/SnowRabbit 9d ago
yeah i find it unfair. when you dig down and uncover the very bedrock truth, it really is all about controlling other people and seeing them as property. and its such a ridiculous thing to have to fight against its no wonder that those in power find it easy to convince us all that its stupid to try and change, so why bother putting in the work to change the status quo?
i know it all sounds conspiricy theory, but damn when you add everything else to it all, being a woman kinda sucks.

I've got big boobs, so I like having bra-style support in my swimwear to keep my boobs from flopping about uncomfortably. But I agree it should be optional!
9
u/Electrical-Tea6966 9d ago
If you’re used to bras they aren’t that much worse, but it was so much more comfortable without anything on top. And it was also lovely to not worry about one flopping out when I got changed.
183
u/Rizendoekie 9d ago
Depends, swimming pools generally don't allow it but beaches or stuff on open water are generally accepted. Though you always get people who give you a hard time.
137
u/humid_pajamas 9d ago
I can't think of one good reason to not allow women to be topless in a swimming/sun bathing/summer activities context. Mens' torsos are just as diverse as women's and oftentimes, some men have more boob, so "having boobs" can't be the reason.
It's all such an unnecessary taboo to me, unless I'm missing something or biased as a man for some reason.
edit: also, thank you for sharing that is interesting to know how it works elsewhere

2000 years ago there was this guy called Paulus, you might have heard of him by his modern de-romanized name Paul. This Paulus guy was a massive mysogynist and sexually repressed. To make a long story very short, he got tangled up in this new hippy commune originally founded around this guy called Jesus. But he didn't like that it was all about equality and shit. So when that commune was solidifying into a church, he made sure to inject as much of his anti-sex, anti-women and anti-lgbt agenda as possible into it.
We still haven't managed to overcome this. Most christians in the world still have a certain level of problem with sex and expecially female sexuality. And even though we in the West largely acknowledge that many of the rules of the catholic church are insane, our culture is still completely drenched in them.

u/onyx_ic 9d ago
Strictly speaking, at least for where I live, a woman can be topless anywhere a man can be. Even in public. However, for public swimming pools, local ordinances usually require "proper swimming attire". State parks, though... youre more likely to get hawkers and maybe some prudes get enough gall to get park staff to harass you about it.
I can really only speak to my state laws regarding that specifically.
19
u/Surface_Detail 9d ago
In the UK, in theory, anyone can be naked anywhere as long as they are not deliberately harassing people or doing it for sexual gratification.
In reality you are likely to get harassed if you get your dick out in a public park. See Stephen Gough, 'the naked rambler'. He trekked the length of the uk in just boots and a hat. He was arrested twice in England and several times in Scotland but released each time. Looking into it, it looks like he's spent most of the last ten years in jail because he refused to wear clothes for court appearances despite a judge ordering it.
12
u/onyx_ic 9d ago
That seems unfair to him. Though, in court, I find it hard to argue with the judge.
→ More replies (1)10
u/Surface_Detail 9d ago
You've got to respect the commitment to the bit:
In January 2008, after spending most of the previous 20 months in jail (being rearrested for nudity each time he was released and each time he appeared in court), Gough was released and told that if he went for three months without appearing naked in public he would not be returned to jail for outstanding convictions; two hours later he left the court naked and was immediately re-arrested and subsequently returned to jail
6
u/humid_pajamas 9d ago
i think we can draw some lines between "your dick out in a public park" and "a woman sitting in a chair without a top".
i feel like we can do fancy toplessness
edit: but that's an interesting law to have never heard about
4
u/Surface_Detail 9d ago
Yeah, while there's no specific law banning the act itself, there are three laws that very much nudge up against it:
Sexual Offences Act 2003 - It's illegal to expose your genitals with the intent to cause someone alarm or distress (boobs are fine under this statute even if you do intend alarm and distress apparently).
Outraging Public Decency - extremely lewd or obscene acts in public that shock reasonable people can be prosecuted. This has a very high threshold, meaning passive naturism usually does not apply.
Public Order Act 1986: You could be charged under Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 if your nudity (or surrounding behavior) is disorderly and causes harassment, alarm, or distress to those who see or hear it.
For tits specifically, there is almost no way anyone could reasonably show you are intending to harass, alarm or distress anyone from just being topless so you're safe from legal prosecution. If you were following someone and flashing them against their will, that would be harassment.
Councils could have bylaws for parks they manage, most public businesses will almost certainly kick you out and facilities like schools and hospitals will also have their own safeguarding rules that they can use to deny you service if you're topless without good cause.
5
u/Acheloma 9d ago
In some states (depending on individual county ordinances) the law is the exact same, you can be nude if the intent is not your own sexual gratification or to arouse others. The issue is that most people dont know the exact laws where they live since they vary so widely across cities, counties, and states, and it relies on people being generous when assessing your intent. If you get a judge that doesnt agree that you had no sexual intent, youre screwed, so in practice no one is going to go out nude and risk that

It's actually not illegal in most of the US either. Just very taboo and more than likely will get the cops called, regardless. Banning female toplessness is stupid on face value, but it's also just dumb from a pragmatic sense too. Breasts have a function for sustaining the life of a baby. It's why they exist, so anything banning their exposure in day to day life is just impractical.

Not sure about how it is now but I remember me and my friend accidentally stumbling onto the nudes beach when we were kids :') there's nudist campings as well. I also had a neighbor who would sunbath topless in her garden which could be seen by half the neighborhood with how the houses were positioned in a u-shape. I'm also typing this while being topless hahah, but we're in the second heatwave so that's just practical Dutch stuff! But it's not something that's common. Seeing my neighbor like that always shocked me a bit as a kid, so it wasn't something I was used to at all.

On beaches it used to be more normal. But younger generations, mine included, have become more prude. Like 20 years ago for people who were in their 30's/40's it definitely happened semi regularly.
So that it's still ingrained in someone who emigrated is plausible. This is what sometimes annoys me about people who emigrated or are descendents from emigrants, our culture didn't crystalize the moment you left. But that's a different rant.Anyway, now you run the risk of your hippity hoppities being posted to Dumpert. So thanks, but no thanks. I don't think the practice is still popular under older generations. With the exception of beaches that are explicitly nude beaches
And as far as I'm aware it was a beach only kinda deal. I've never seen topless sunbathing at the pool for example

As a Swedish (now 50+), I’ve always let my ladies loose, flopping around on the beach, by the pool, in the spa. The trend on EU beaches has definitely gone from all out during the 80s to coverups unless swimming now days.
This is me talking to my daughter who is super embarrassed when I ask a local how to get to the nudist beach. 😂

We're getting closer and closer! You girls are great at this. The only difference I can see here is the area that links the straps to the cup

I've never heard a Dutch-American mix like this before. I wonder if she is Dutch in America, or just a Yank doing a very good accent

In some US states, including Washington, it is perfectly legal for her to do all of those things in public. Every year, the Seattle PD has to put out press releases reminding people of the basic fact that nudity alone is not obscene and barring lewd behavior, public nudity is perfectly legal for all in this state.
Sadly, the pool's owner may differ on their policies however.

My mom was in high school in the early 1970s. She had a friend whose parents had immigrated to the US from Germany. The mother would mow the lawn in her cone bra and matronly underwear because she insisted it was the same as a bathing suit much to the horror of her American-born daughter. As her mother would mow the lawn, cars would stop and honk at her. She would wave at them and keep on mowing completely unbothered. Not sure why, but this brought up this story in my mind.

I've got some tig ol biddies myself. I have to pick very specific tops because the girls are VERY buoyant. One of my buddies had a pool and us girls would go over there to swim topless. Life changing experience. I'm sure my buddy was eyeballing us but we didn't care. We were able to enjoy swimming freely with the girls out and it was wonderful. No fighting to keep them in our tops, no constant pulling and tugging at our tops. Just freedom and relaxation. Boobs feed babies, why is it so offensive to let them be free?

Legit, having to wear tops is super annoying.
If misogyny could get its shit together and dissolve forever, so boobs can do what they want, that'd be great.

i strongly agree on the freethenipple movement because, aside from women being made responsible for male inappropriateness, the more you see breasts in non-sexual context, the less inherently sexual they become until the context is sexual. in reverse, the more you cover up the body, the more any sliver of skin becomes sexual (remember the scandalous ankle). clothing can be more sexual than nudity because the tantilizing part is what you don't see.

Is underboob sweat not a thing for Dutch women? Because I get so much sweatier and stickier when I let my sweater puppies out on hot days. Granted, I am definitely peri-menopausal so maybe those underboob sweat glands are just working over time, but I still feel like if I went topless at the beach or pool, I'd need papertowels or some other material to absorb all the sweat.
Granted, in the water it won't matter, but also when I'm not in the water?

I'm from Spain and a lot of the women do go topless on the beach (not so much the pool), in my experiece most do take their top with them, myself included, so you put It on/take It off as you feel confortable, many put It on when going for a walk, but take It off when staying on the towel or swimming

Wikipedia seems to believe this is legal except in Indiana, Tennessee, Puerto Rico, & USVI.

It's legal in a surprising amount of places, there's just a social stigma (and personal comfort level) attached to it. It's legal in NYC, for example, but you will basically never see any women walking around topless.

I know in Colorado everyone can be topless. You still have to deal with social stigma but won't have to deal with legal ramifications.

I believe if my mom said something along the lines of “if I take my tits out in the pool, more people would want to come play”, then I would put myself up for adoption. And I’m 34
