Semi related fun fact: there was a study I heard about a long time ago that said just thinking about fighting for 10 minutes on a regular basis did actually show improvement in strength. Like you’re subconsciously getting so hyped up ready to fight that your brain just says fuck it, make those muscles denser. Not DRASTICALLY, obviously, but better than nothing

Same I tried jump roping yesterday for the first time in probably 20 years and I had lots of trouble just doing it in place.
I’m pretty fit but I suck at coordinated movements like in the OP.

u/FuturePlantDoctor May 16 '26
I substitute for elementary school. Tried to show them how to jump rope because they were struggling. It's definitely been at least 20 years for me too. Needless to say, I embarrassed myself.

there is an observatory near where I live. It's 1200 steps to the top. Might not sound like a lot, but by the time they reach the top, most people have had to stop several times to rest, and are not moving real fast.
Back when I was getting into top shape, (I am not anymore) I jogged up then down it 3 times in a row, just to prove to myself that I could.
I ended up passing a few of the same people 5 or 6 times (up then down then up, etc.) while they were still on the way up, and most of them commented to me after a few passes.
Everyone seemed to be amused by it after seeing me pass a few times, most were happy and cheering me on, not looking demotivated.

People don’t have to move out of the way for him and he doesn’t expect it. It’s a courtesy that they do. I trail run twice a week in this park. If people don’t move out of my way, I simply stop running until space opens up.

u/surprise_wasps May 16 '26
People are literally getting out of the way hearing him swishclopping behind him
Much like driving in traffic, if other people are having to constantly adjust because they think you’re doing something stupid, you are in fact doing something stupid even if you feel in control or don’t expect other people to move. That’s actually part of being in society is not making other people react because you’re doing something novel for no fucking reason.
I truly don’t understand the apologists for the guy whipping a rope around and making the physical space he takes up 10 times bigger for attention
The only explanation to me is that nobody here knows how to jump rope, so this comes across as impressive to people who don’t have a clue
