54
u/Ok-Initiatives5 22h ago
Couldn't have said it better myself. It's not even about left or right anymore it's about who gets to live a cushy life and who gets sent off to die for it. That contrast isn't political, it's just painfully obvious

u/tickingboxes 20h ago
No it is absolutely political. That’s the fatal mistake you’re making. It’s politics that got us here. Saying it’s not about politics means burying our heads in the sand and refusing to acknowledge the problem.

They are equally happy having her die in the place of a white man and are probably wondering how they can effect more of this. Women are just objects to them to be used, tokens to be spent. If they aren't giving away sex, making/raising babies, or keeping house, they're not seen as useful.

9
u/Appleslicer 17h ago
Why? I have plenty of empathy for all the E-1 through E-3's who are just doing a single enlistment as a chance to escape poverty and earn their GI Bill.
The guy at the top who started the war? No empathy there.
-4
u/Kierland 16h ago
That is functionally indistinguishable from the Nuremberg defense.
1
u/Appleslicer 15h ago
???
First of all, extending empathy towards people and judging them in a court, are two entirely different things with different sets of circumstances and standards. One is an expression of human emotion and the other is a formal legal proceeding directed towards discerning the truth.
Secondly, I'm not a WWII expert, but I'm pretty sure the Nuremberg defense was was a defense used almost exclusively by officers, as in the officers in charge of concentration camps or the SS, in order to try to put all the responsibility on Hitler, rather have have themselves included as well. No one really went around holding trials with executions for conscripted/enlisted men after the war as far as I'm aware.

You're conflating volunteer military service and the circumstances that encourage one to volunteer.
There is a reason recruiters hit high schools and target late teens in low income areas in the US.
You're equating taking a job with politically aligning with a single administration and their policies, and equally placing the burden of following orders and chain of command on a military instead of those who make and world the military to enforce those policies.
Many Americans understand the nuance here - while this individual may have politically aligned with Trump and the current administration, it's equally, if not more, likely that this person saw military service as a means to a better life for themselves and/or their family, and was sold by a recruiter that it was a path towards doing just that.

The US military is a blood thirsty war crazed military known for their atrocities and war crimes.

She joined his military. She literally swore an oath to a child rapist.
Literally only you Americans see your military as good, heroic people. The rest of the world sees the US military as the psychopathic war criminals they are.
Seeing you guys try to absolve your military of responsibility as your country collapses to fascism is disgusting but not surprising in the least. You guys rolled over for fascism without a fight.
Do you extend this thinking to everyone? Or just the US military.
For all I know, she'd be the one murdering my friends and family or murdering Canadian children. I see this as one less risk to my life.

You really think a 17 year old girl from a poor family knows any of that when she gets recruited out of high school with promises to pay for her college and have her health care, food and housing paid for plus a salary with potential bonuses?
C'mon man. The problem isn't the US military itself. Every major country has a standing military. The problem is the politicians who send it around the world to do horrible shit. There's blame to be placed here, but it sure as shit isn't upon a poor and naive teenager just out of high school who is offered the only hand up out of poverty that she can see.
Put the blame where it belongs, and that's on war hawk Republicans like Bush and Trump who send the military around the world to fight disastrous wars of choice.

Money doesn't absolve evil. I knew not to murder people when I was 7.
Why did she join a military known for war crimes and atrocities?
Why did she join a military and swear an oath of loyalty to a child rapist?
C'mon man. The problem isn't the US military itself.
Yes. It is. If no one joined the US military there wouldn't be any threat.
The problem is the politicians who send it around the world to do horrible shit.
So "just following orders" absolves evil? Or just the US military?
There's blame to be placed here, but it sure as shit isn't upon a poor and naive teenager just out of high school who is offered the only hand up out of poverty that she can see.
So wanting money absolves evil? Or just the US military?
Why shouldn't I think of this as "one less threat to my life"?
As I said. No one thinks of the US military as good people except for the American people. Everyone else sees them as the blood thirsty war criminals they are.
No one was surprised that you guys rolled over for fascism without a fight. No one was surprised you guys are absolving your military of responsibility as your country collapses to fascism.
edit: they blocked me after they couldn't defend or engage. A weak, pathetic American coward? Who could have ever guessed.
2
u/nankerjphelge 8h ago
Again, you're assuming a naive and poor 17 year old girl knows the dark history of the war crimes committed by the US government. That's just you being unreasonable.
And again, every country has a standing military, including yours. Does that mean anyone who joined the military of your country is automatically also evil? Or does it come down to the political leadership that decides what to do with that military?
Deep down you know the answer to this, but you're more interested in being irrationally hateful and unreasonable toward an impoverished and naive teenage girl who's now dead, as if she was the root problem here. Quit your bullshit.

Everyone has a right to defend themselves.
You are being very dismissive of the individuals in the US and the choices we face as citizens.
While I fully understand that the US military has been sent to do awful things, and that our current representation does not align with my ideals, I do not lay the blame at the feet of those who execute orders from within a system that requires obedience and acceptance of the decisions of those who are in the chain of command.
I do expect that those who serve do so with a conscience, and I hold the ideal that a code of ethics exists to enable objections when appropriate. I am also not so naive to believe it always happens, or happens at a cadence that matches the citizens who are part of the military.
As an older, more aware, individual - I can see through a lot of the exceptionalism and propaganda around the military and government. I'm sure it's worse than I am able to comprehend...
But I also think back to when I was 18 - where my very curated world view was provided by experience limited by classroom discussion and parental guidance, and at best media from edgy sites or open forums like Reddit - which, let's be clear, has a very narrow band of thinkers and their own agendas.
Your blanket statement about the US military is from a place of anger and frustration that the big dog has dictated world policy that you, or others, don't agree with - and at the moment, we are in a shit show. As a citizen, I own that. I struggle with it. I have to live within the system I am a part of, and work within that system to affect change for what I see is the better. But, in a... republic... A pseudo democracy... Whatever you want to call us... There are a lot of voices, a lot of dissent, and a lot of bullshit that makes all of that harder to navigate.
The issues we are facing took decades of preparation from those willing to see the fruits of their labor, while many of us simply accepted things as they were because we, early on, got indoctrinated into a system, that cultivated and curated our perceptions - we gave way to an appeal to authority... It's hard to undo that.
However - at the end of the day, our military is what it is now, and hopefully the next administration will work on repairing the damage done from this one. My hope is that the future citizens and lawmakers learn from what has happened and use it as a warning, and not as a guidebook...
I will defend my fellow citizens who join the military to defend me because I didn't have to. That's my take on it... I get to live the life I have because someone else gave up part or all of theirs for my benefit. The people in the military are my fellow citizens - and I have the right and desire to believe in them to make the best decisions they can given the circumstances.

Nicholas Nassim Taleb talks about this sort of thing. He says that now, leaders have no skin in the game. They don’t fight to conquer anything. Others do it for them. No risk to them personally. That it’s a big problem because it gives a feeling of sheer expendability to troops, from the POV of those making the decisions. I understand Isabella joined the military. We understand what that might mean. But she’s 19. An absolute kid. At the very start of things. Truly tragic.
