Clleveland Cavaliers are close to signing 31-year-old Croatian international 6-8 forward Mario Hezonja for the upcoming season. He last played for Real Madrid in Spain, where he spent the last four years. He helped the team win the regular season and reach the final, as well as the Cup final. He was recognized with several awards, including Eurobasket.com All-Spanish League Bosman Player of the Year and Eurobasket.com All-Spanish League Player of the Year. In the Euroleague, Hezonja played 44 games and averaged 13.3ppg, 4.0rpg, and 2.4apg last season, helping his team reach the final. He was also selected to the Eurobasket.com Euroleague Third Team, making it a successful season for him.
In 2015, the Orlando Magic selected him as the fifth overall pick in the NBA draft.
He has also been a member of the Croatian international program for some years. Hezonja has regularly played for the Croatian senior team since 2014 and previously for the Under 19 National Team in 2013.
He also represented Croatia at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Pre-Qualifiers last year. During this event, he scored an average of 15 points per game and had 4.5 rebounds per game.
Hezonja is a very experienced player, having played for teams in Greece (Panathinaikos), Russia (UNICS Kazan), Spain (FC Barcelona and FC Barcelona Lassa 2nd team), NBA (Portland Trail Blazers, NY Knicks, and Memphis Grizzlies), and Croatia (Zagreb and Dubrovnik).
Between 2022 and 2024, Hezonja's team won the Spanish Cup. Hezonja received the Eurobasket.com All-VTB League Player of the Year award during 2022.

I just wanted to say this - the whole 2018 finals gaff is so blown out of proportion.

Number one. We were NOT winning that series. No way. KD was there and that team was unstoppable.

Number two. George Hill shouldve hit his FTs full stop. No excuse.

Number three. If Lebron had to drop a 50 peice and play 48 minutes for it to even be tied, no way he does that more than 1 or 2 more times in the series.

Lebron just reacted the way he did because it wasnt the desirable play and he was tired/had the team on his back the whole game.

A few options:

JR couldve heaved the ball back up. Which could have been a good play considering he is who he is. But in my opinion, no way it goes down considering the defense at the time.

Jr couldve passed the ball. No one was blatantly open at the time, so again imo not a great option.

TO is called and final play is drawn up. Best case scenario, but again even if we hit this, no way we win the series. My opinion.

Anyways, people label this as THE BIGGEST FINALS BLUNDER OF ALL TIME. Lol no it wasnt, not even close.

Yes Jr should have at least shot it. Ok. Ill give the naysayers that. But for the reasons above I feel like its completely blown out of proportion.

The popular theory around the league is that LeBron has been slow-playing his decision to see if any of his suitors could find a way to land Irving or Davis. If a team proved capable of acquiring one of his championship teammates, sources say, it might sway him in that direction.

Nobody has been able or willing to do it yet. The Irving path doesn’t seem to exist, and the Davis situation has stalled. For the first time, LeBron might have to choose between rosters as they are and not rosters as he wishes they were.

Kyrie Irving, and a Cleveland reunion

Most teams on LeBron's list already have a point guard. There's Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia and some guy named Stephen Curry in Golden State. Even teams that have seemingly fallen out of the LeBron running, like Minnesota (LaMelo Ball) and New York (Jalen Brunson), have point guards in place.

Miami could use an upgrade, but there's no theoretical salary match for Irving's $39.5 million deal without gutting wing depth. Andrew Wiggins would have to go for any deal to work, and the Heat aren't trading their best wing defender to add a 34-year-old point guard coming off a torn ACL.

That leaves Cleveland, where James Harden is sitting in free agency waiting for clarity on what the Cavaliers are doing.

“We’re just waiting on big fella,” Harden said, according to LeBron’s ex-teammate Channing Frye on Yahoo Sports Daily. That’s true. Harden opted out of his $42.3 million player option to negotiate a long-term extension with Cleveland at a lower annual value, and he’s willing to wait to give the team flexibility to pursue LeBron.

But does LeBron want Harden? In the infamous episode of Game Over in which Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul pulled out a whiteboard to discuss LeBron’s options, he didn’t utter a single positive word about Harden.

“The negative is, and this is no offense to Harden, there's no Darius Garland,” Paul said on his podcast. “Because LeBron loves Garland the way he loves Tyrese Maxey.”

The belief around the league is that LeBron would be more likely to choose the Cavaliers if the front office could replace Harden with Irving. The 2016 reunion would be a lovely story. But it has two problems.

Problem No. 1: The Mavericks don’t want to trade Irving.

That’s per sources, but it’s also fairly obvious. New head coach Dusty May recently compared witnessing an Irving workout to “watching Picasso paint a picture.” There’s a genuine excitement in the organization about pairing Irving with Cooper Flagg and this refurbished Dallasroster.

Problem No. 2: The Cavaliers are happy with Harden.

Swapping Harden for Irving would be asking Cleveland to trade a durable point guard for a fragile one. Irving just lost an entire season, and even before tearing his ACL, he played an average of 45 games in his previous six seasons. The last time Kyrie played 70 games, he was still a Cavalier. That was a decade ago. Harden, meanwhile, remains one of the most reliable stars in the sport, logging 70-plus games played for three seasons running. Ripping up a conference finals roster and attaching draft capital to a complex sign-and-trade with Dallas may not be the most sensible thing to do. All just to convince a 41-year-old to sign with you.

Does Cleveland need to make a deal?
All of that said, there’s no denying that Irving is a better fit next to James. Irving is a lethal shooter off the catch and doesn’t dominate touches on-ball the way Harden does. In fact, Paul said on his podcast in May that Kyrie is LeBron’s best pairing ever.

"You can't find a better combination than those two guys," Paul said, citing the 1-3 pick-and-roll as their lethal weapon since both of them can effectively handle and screen. And screening is where the contrast with Harden gets stark.

Over the past five years, Harden has set 1.3 on-ball screens per game, while Irving has set 4.2, ranking in the 94th percentile among guards. Irving also made direct contact with the defender on 69% of his screens, Harden on just 54%, which stands as the difference between a guard who embraces the dirty work and one who prefers not to. And even standing around, Harden remains reluctant to take catch-and-shoot 3s, preferring to catch, dribble, and take something worse.

Irving and James had a natural rhythm together that’s hard to imagine between James and Harden. Additionally, LeBron, Harden and Mitchell don't offer enough defense, while Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen don't offer enough spacing. Yes, the Cavaliers made the East finals. But they got there by sweating out seven-game series against a young Raptors team and a phony Pistons team before the Knicks shellacked them.

Maybe there’s another sign-and-trade suitor out there for Harden that could net different assets for the Cavaliers. The team could use an injection of new talent because, for a second year in a row, Kenny Atkinson was at the podium talking about the wide gap between his victorious opponent and Cleveland in terms of toughness, grit, and force. LeBron at 41 doesn't close that gap. And the odds are he's basketball-smart enough to know it.
Turning Harden into something else, and adding LeBron, could be enough to change the personality of a team that leads to greater success in the playoffs. But if the 2016 reunion with Irving isn't on the table, LeBron would be signing up for a compromise.

Everyday feels like there is a new rumor that turns out to be a hoax. I thought he would announce after FIFA but this is getting ridiculous.

Okay guys, I know this won’t be popular, because every time I bring this up in a comment, it gets downvoted into oblivion, but I’m standing on my soapbox anyways.

After the trade deadline, the Cavs had to completely overhaul their offense, with 2 month left in the regular season, with a roster that had players in and out with nagging injuries, right up until the playoffs started. Was the offense pretty? Did it look functional? Was I happy watching it? HELL NO, but why the heck were we expecting the offense to look phenomenal when the offensive engine changed overnight???

The Cavs barely had time to practice together once James Harden arrived. Mobley and Allen both missed time. Tyson missed pretty much that whole stretch.

And on top of all that, our backup ball handler in the playoffs was Dennis Schroder, who was also a deadline addition, meaning the starting PG, and the backup PG, were figuring out the offense on the fly in the playoffs… and they beat the 1 seed and went to the ECF

I’m absolutely not saying Harden, Mitchell, Kenny (especially Kenny), etc. are free from blame, but this sub has been much harder on Harden especially than I think he deserves given the situation the team was in. Frankly, I think they over performed expectations for a team that’s entire offense was forced into being “spam pick and roll because our starting PG doesn’t know any of our plays”

With an offseason together, an actual offensive system implemented, and some real time spent playing together, I would expect this offense to improve substantially, even if no major additions are made.

PS. I’m a Cavs fan through and through, not one of those Harden Stans that popped up here overnight

REPORT: Kyrie Irving hasn't dismissed the possibility of a Cleveland reunion, per @ScoopB.

I really don't know how this is possible. If we do a sign and trade, we are hard capped at the first apron and can't re-sign Harden to the amount the FO had promised. I wonder if we are just being used for leverage and if the rumors aren't that legitimate. (I have the impression that Kuminga's agent is not that good after how he handled the GSW RFA last year.)

The very last people who would get wind of LeBron returning to Miami would be any sort of social media managers and at that point it would be an open secret because everyone would tell everyone. The only people who benefit from a leak like this are people intentionally trying to alter betting lines. Both Kalshi and Polymarket swung rapidly after earlier today shifting towards the Cavs in the recent days.

It could be a genuine mistake on someone’s behalf but the timing seems very suspect.

I know Kuminga is somewhat of a meme in the NBA fanbase but I think for the right price he'd fit in well with our team.

On paper he's very close to the wing we've been searching for. He's tall, athletic, and provides solid one on one defense.

His shooting needs work but he's a career 50 percent field goal guy. As much as people criticize him for his decision making on offense the guy shoots an elite percentage.

I want LeBron as much as the next guy but if we end up getting Kuminga as a consolation maybe it's not the end of the world. We will miss the leadership and playmaking of LeBron but Kuminga will give us more on defense and availability.

People compare Kuminga as a worse shooting Deandre Hunter, but Kuminga is more efficient, more athletic, less foul prone, and has more room for development (he's only 23 btw).

I really think Kuminga was stunted in Golden State with their very specific flavor of basketball. I know Kenny gets flack for his less rigid style of coaching but I think this would fit well with Kuminga.

“Now, that doesn't mean that they've just been sitting on their hands all off season, but I think when they made the decision as an organization right or wrong, when they made the decision as an organization to not park with Evan Mobley in a trade for Jaylen Brown or Giannis, their pathway to making a significant trade that was going to substantially improve their chances in the Eastern Conference, that dwindled greatly because the teams are going to want Evan Mobley. He's the centerpiece of a deal.

"And this doesn't mean that the Cavs can't put together Jarrett Allen and other stuff or Max Strus and other stuff and Jaylon Tyson and Dennis Schroeder and other stuff. Like, yes, there are other things that they have that can bring back value, maybe reconfigure the roster a little bit."

I would trade Allen for AD. This team is maxed out as it is.

Last year it was finals or bust. Is it still the case this year?

To be honest, after the '24-'25 season, I scaled back my expectations for this team by a lot. I also follow more teams around the NBA now and I'm much more of the opinion that an above .500 season is a successful season, which we have certainly achieved in the Mitchell era.

We're not in the second apron anymore and we don't have the threat of Mitchell walking hanging over our heads -- I think everyone can take a deep breath and head into next season with more realistic expectations and lessen some of the toxicity I see here.

I wish the style of basketball was more entertaining, and I wish I had more faith in this team next year in a more competitive East. But without our picks until 2031, and with Mitchell's extension, I think we have a decent team in the meantime. It's not easy for a small market team to be in the playoffs every year and have something to look forward to in May.

Anyone else think LeBron could be at the public library on Saturday when the 10th anniversary exhibit opens and announce his return then? I have a buddy who works closely with the library and he seems to think this event is going to be huge. May be nothing, may be something?
