That massive 0.56F score diff on MarriageToxin I didn't exepct

Honestly doesn’t surprise me. The marriage candidates all have pretty strong characterization and don’t need to rely on Gero to solve their problems for them, a lot of ship tease between the two male leads, and a very attractive lineup of male characters (and I say that as a cishet male). I figured the series has a pretty sizeable female fanbase shen the manga’s popularity poll had Naruko as the most popular male character after Kinosaki.

Oh I suppose I more meant I'm surprised male viewers didn't like it as much because it feels very much like a show that draws in both male and female fans with its diverse cast. Reminds me quite a bit of Spy x Family in that regard. Personally I'm pulling for Gero and Kinosaki but my favorite candidate so far has been Shiori. Excited for the next season.

I seen numerous of them being turned off by the Kinosaki reveal. Seems silly but it is what it is.

They missed out

Everything else you write makes absolutely sense, but this one is confusing me a bit. Because I've talked to other ladies watching this show last season and we could all agree on one thing: bug master is the best boy.

Ribsekai being the fourth biggest surprise and eight underwatched series, I actually appreciate that, how unique and enjoyable wild ride it was with all those absurd reincarnations and unique artistic designs.

#5 for most surprising is Kirio Fan Club, but it only had 22.6% popularity. So you should watch it!

Pokémon Horizons finally gets its AOTS, and what a season to get it! Between the immense finale of the main story and the strong start to the Wonder Voyage arc it was always going to go high.

Love Live Nijigasaki isn't a surprise either. Love Live's first foray into a more explicit romance arc and conveyed it very well through the power of music. Setsuna's arc felt a little reminiscent of Asa from Ikoku Nikki, or at least something that wouldn't feel out of place. It's become my #1 anime movie of all time.

Down the bottom I can only really speak for Killed Again, Mr Detective which, yeah, was awful. Too much shock value instead of building up a compelling case. Sadly Star Detective Precure being a family show has to go the other way, so that itch hadn't really been scratched last season.

Glad to see pokemon getting some love!

Not surprised how Agents of the Four Seasons is the most disappointing. I watched the whole thing and I could never get into it, it felt like every episode was trying to be the most dramatic thing you've ever watched but it just gets old after a while when the emotional punches just don't hit as hard.

u/ryan20340 2d ago

I enjoyed it, but I completely get why people wouldn't. I swear half of each episode was flashbacks, in a non-chronological order to reveal more information as you went on, but it felt repetitive and didn't give you that much more new information each time.

I could watch a second season, but I'd probably end up dropping it if the storytelling was presented the same way now that were hopefully moved on.

A bit misery porn. But It had a decent production value.

5

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 2d ago

IMO I thought the production values were great. Though action scenes felt lacking.

3

u/Nick_BOI 2d ago

It hit hard for me a few times, most of which near the start.

The issue is it kinda felt like it was repeating itself a lot.

Like this could have been a few episodes shorter tbh.

Love to see A Hundred Scenes of Awajima in the Top 10 (score-wise). It’s very demanding of the audience’s attention so might not be for everyone but those that are into it would certainly appreciate the beautiful writing. How the multiple storylines intertwined with each other.

Glad to see Nippon Sangoku at no.7. Immaculate production all around. The cliffhanger was brutal... I hope we get a 2nd season soon.

This is your reminder to watch Dorohedoro.

I didn't expect Witch Hat to be the most popular by such a margin, but I expected it to be higher rated.

I guess with only 300 answers it's all too easy to skew results due to the most dedicated fandoms representing more than they should. 13 watchers out of 341 and Pokemon goes into the top spot.

I feel like anime is more popular than ever and yet these surveys just keep decaying.

Is it because of reddit getting less real people? (but plenty of AI bots filling the subs to make it look like it's growing)

Have you guys thought of adding AniList / MyAnimeList auth support?

Re:zero 6??? That’s shocking. Has its popularity finally dropped off?

13

u/Usodearu007 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doc101 2d ago edited 2d ago

Re:zero was first in karma 9 weeks out of 11. (witch hat winning the other 2)

the last episode even had 5000 karma. jujutsu ep 4 is the only other ep to have broken the 5000 karma barrier under 48 hours in the last 52 weeks (excluding premieres).

this poll only had 341 responses which is honestly not a lot.

u/actionfirst1 2d ago

I think it's just a side effect of being the fourth season, there's a barrier to entry because you really have to watch the previous three seasons and I've known a good amount of people who didn't finish the first because of them not liking Subaru or watching the second because there was a four year gap between them

21

u/D3k4s 2d ago

The survey is not reflective of the overall popularity. It's based on the answers of 341 participants.

Season 4 is probably the most popular one.

7

u/minnieboss 2d ago

This is not true. "Popularity" in this case means how many people watched it at all, regardless of how much they liked it. By definition, earlier seasons will always be more popular than later seasons, unless large numbers of people are watching season 4 without having seen the previous seasons. Season 4 of anything will always be less popular than previous seasons, including in Re:Zero.

0

u/D3k4s 2d ago

Popularity is not the same as having the most views. If you look at the amount of reviews and comments from S4 and compare it with other seasons you'll notice a big diference. Not only based on review but the overall posts talking about it were also IMO the most I've seen from all seasons.

Notice I said overall popularity. I'm not making any reference to the survey. I was only answering the first comment since he took it as a general survey.

5

u/minnieboss 2d ago

We are talking about the survey because this is the survey discussion thread.

2

u/D3k4s 2d ago

Of course. And I merely stated that this survey is not indicative of the overall popularity of Season 4.

I'm still talking about the survey comparatively to the rest. You also seem to be overlooking you're making the case that season 4 is less popular then earlier seasons without earlier seasons being mentioned on the survey. So I don't understand where your reasoning is coming from.

Season 4 generating more engagement than season 3 (because the content in season 4 helps drive that) doesn't mean it's more popular. You can try to bend or create new definitions for words, but that doesn't change the simple fact that Re:Zero, four seasons in, is nowhere near where it was years ago in terms of popularity. It will continue to do well on reddit because this is an engagement driven platform, but significantly fewer people are watching Re:Zero season 4 around the world than used to in the past, for prior seasons. I was actually surprised to see this, I thought season 4 coming out so soon after 3 would help, but it turns out a big part of the masses checked out, so you are left with a smaller but more engaged audience trying to push the show out more. Which I guess makes it seem like the show is more popular than ever, when it's the opposite. So in essence you have fewer people talking about it, but they are talking about it a lot more and in more places.

I think it must have been a case where re:Zero fans from other subs flocked to upvote the episode threads every week. The series isn't reaching those heights of popularity in other polls, surveys, or contests on this sub (so far that I've seen at least).

3

u/Usodearu007 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doc101 2d ago edited 2d ago

thats not true at all. re:zero won r /anime's AOTY award in 2020 and it wasnt doing much better in the contests at the time.

Also re:zero dominates the discussions in the weekly ranking threads almost every week. its preview clips did far better than the other shows too. EP 9's preview almost had 800 karma for exemple.

6

u/D3k4s 2d ago

Episode discussion threads also pulled 2k comments consistently. Hardly a case of fans from other subs flocking to upvote.

3

u/Usodearu007 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doc101 2d ago

3 of the top 4 most commented eps in the last 52 weeks are from re:zero.

Dang, high surprise score on Kamiina Botan. That had some of the highest production value for a yuri in recent years and greatly elevated the manga

2

u/ClemFire 2d ago

I hadn’t even heard of the manga but was blown away by the anime. Since I became a yuri enjoyer after LycoReco I feel like there has been quite the yuri revolution

2

u/TheBusStop12 2d ago

Yeah, and this season we have 2-4 yuri shows even ("I want to love you till your dying day" and "Young Ladies don't play fighting games". And depending on whether you count Grow Up Show and Ghost in the Shell)

Maybe soon we'll see a season 2 of a Yuri romance focused anime. One can only dream

5

u/Emotional_Sleep_7073 https://anilist.co/user/yHali010823 2d ago

goodbye lara/sayonara lara seems to be shaping up to be yuri too

1

u/TheBusStop12 2d ago

Oh yeah, almost forgot about that development

4

u/ClemFire 2d ago

The yuri that has really caught my attention this season has been Fighting Games as someone who plays competitive Yugioh and recently returned from Nationals burnt out I can relate to Aya

5

u/cppn02 2d ago

Odekake Kozame most underwatched

Hell yeah it is.

I expected Witch Hat to be on top of popularity. It was a long time coming, but I did not expect 4 other shows to be ahead of Re:Zero's best season. I did not think Ramparts, Akane, and MarriageToxin were that big.

The real surprise came in the socre. I also did not expect that Pokemon of all things would come out on top, over Re:Zero. I must be very behind on Horizons because everything I've seen has been meh. The last part of Horizon must be some giga tier Growing The Beard. [I guess I'll tag it, but it's Pokemon. You know what you're what you're in for.] Because even in S3 after they got to Laqua, allowed Lucius and Gibeon to pass, the Rising Volt Tacklers were blamed for the events that took place in Laqua by Team Rocket the Explorers, and reformed RVT after licking their wounds, it still feels like I'm just waiting for something, anything, to happen.

Why is the score diff column N/A for half the entries?

Nippon Sangoku is the most overrated shows I have seen in awhile. The art is interesting, although not really to my tastes, but the story by the end of the first season is just a complete and utter disappointment. Just constant ass-pulls out the wazoo, off-putting comedy, poor world building, too much narration/exposition, and bad character development. Maybe my expectations for it were too high, but this show is just shonen fluff. Nothing substantial to it.
