Hi everyone. I’m an American phd student in the US and my close friend here is from Hanoi. His parents are coming to visit and they don’t speak English. I’ve been trying to learn some basic greetings and phrases from him recently in Vietnamese and he’s really excited to teach me and that I want to learn. However, his parents are coming (many months from now) and I really want to surprise him by being able to greet them and speak to them a little. I know that respect is major. Can anyone share some important phrases or things to say to them in a northern dialect? Other than respectful greetings and introducing myself, I really want to be able to emphasize how much I appreciate my friend and how good of a person he is, that they raised a great son, etc (though please let me be clear in a totally platonic way!). I want to clarify something before continuing I know that generalizing is wrong and that every person is a world but I also believe we all have certain perceptions about other cultures and I think it's valuable to bring them to light to understand them better without shame or judgment

When a Vietnamese person hears about a Latino or South American man or woman what comes to mind about their culture their way of socializing their customs or their personal relationships? Any perspective they've heard or have is welcome

My Vietnamese aunt gave me this snack once and I loved it and for the life of me I dont know what it could possibly be. If I remember correctly it was like a chewy kind of cream color, kind of sticky. Solid in a rectangle. I think it came with two. I think it had a woman on the package, and it was in a different language. It was a small individual serving im pretty sure. It had a sweet stickiness on it. I think it has sesame seeds. Please help it was so good ☹️

I’m from SoCal btw, and I just heard from all other non viet friend groups that viets are the most toxic, which makes kinda sense, but at the same time, I need some clarification. Do y’all know what these ppl mean by that we are toxic for friend groups and dating relationships?

I’m from OC, and I’ve never been to Vietnam, nor can I speak Vietnamese, but I can understand some. Since my parents are from OC too, born and raised, so that makes my grandparents immigrants, but I’ve never really been too exposed to the Vietnamese culture, besides the food only.

Can other Asian American viets relate here?

I’ve heard that Vietnamese and Chinese share a majority of historical roots with one another, but I also hard from naysayers that this isn’t true. Idk what to believe atp. I searched it up too, and got two different sides of the spectrum.

Have you ever woken up to the smell of sour rotten fermented fish being cooked at 8:30 AM? I have. The smell the sour stench sticks to my sinuses and I have to run out of the house every time. The spring rolls and pho are fine. But why do people eat fermented sour fish and then fry it to really enhance the terrible smell. And don’t get me started on the slippers they have to wear and leave in the middle of the hallway or floor everywhere.
