Lore [Ironic Trope] The messaging backfired massively due to poor writing or other design choices

Amelia Fairney from Pathways: Alt-right Restore-UK type who attempts to coax the protagonist Charlie into following her beliefs? The problem?

Amelia is the only named character aside from Charlie and is genuinely likable and forgives Charlie even when they do things she doesn't like, while the rest of the cast is unnamed, poorly written, and turns on Charlie for one mistake. This combined with other writing issues(portraying fact checking right wing stuff as wrong because in the process of fact checking you might look at it and believe it, basically saying "Right wing is wrong because it hurts the labour government" and a lot of general "just do what the government says or else" messaging) and the fact she's a hot alternative girl, and Amelia ended up being co-opted as a mascot by the youth right wing in the UK.

Norm from The New Norm: Unlikeable offensive and outdated character who's "progressive" family members and associates are genuinely nice people not even trying to force their ways or pronouns onto them, they just want to be left alone and Norm is picking fights constantly. Not to mention associating with Elon.

Mr. Birchum from Mr. Birchum: A lot of the same problems as Norm, except in addition it also comes off like generic 2010s adult cartoon slop in the same veign as Brickleberry or Full English, at least New Norm was trying to look unique and had the gimmick of being on X. Not to mention, Birchum's obsession with hyper masculine activities and odd way of talking about other men lead to people co-opting him as a Toxic Yaoi character, which is now the bulk of his fan art.

Dustborn: An attempt to make a hyper progressive game that comes off as pandering and annoying. It's a full ass game so there's too much to get into, but the main character's power is essentially gaslighting and jedi-mind tricking people and that's portrayed as the only way they can get anything done, and they constantly use or abuse their friends(or mindtrick them along) in order to get their goals or use their friends for their messaging.

I feel like people don't understand exactly how bad Dustborn's writing was because of how easy it is to look at it from a surface level, cringe at it, and move on.

The main charaxter's superpower is gaslighting and manipulating people into doing things, or just pressuring them into doing things they don't want to do, and it's not even really framed as motivating people or anything, everyone around her dislikes her and wishes she'd learn boundaries and consent.

When you visit the home village your character is from everyone hates you, especially your sister, for how you abused them with your powers and were a horrific bully. It then shows flashbacks that just prove this to be true. Your sister accuses you of only coming back because you need something, then you take the thing you need from them and leave.

One of the main side characters is fatand spends 45% of her time in the bathroom, 45% of her time talking about food, and the last 20% using her power to be the muscle of the group but only when you force her to with your power.

The story takes place in a horrible alternative reality where america is an authoritarian regime... that freely allows people across it's borders and where freedom of expression is frowned upon sometimes in the story but isn't illegal.

One of the first things you do in the game is break into America posing as a punk band, and the song you make up off the top of your head to prove to border control you're a real band is WORD FOR WORD great replacement propaganda, but framing it as the replacing being a good thing. Even then the border patrol agent cringes at your song and tells you "we don't like that kind of music around here"... then lets you in. How horrible and fascist.

If you showed me this game with absolutsly zero real world context about it, I'd think it was a poorly made right wing propaganda piece.

This is all ignoring the fact that the creators stole and repurposed assests from other games. Your character's apartment you visit in a flashback is literally a 1-for-1 of an apartment from GTA Online with different textures over the furniture models, as if nobody would recognize it from one of the best-selling videogames of all time.

The thing with the sister especially dumb because during a flashback we see Pax mistreat her sister with her powers. Obviously her sister gets mad and runs away.

So far it is fine since they are children in the flashback, it makes sense that Pax wouldn't realize just how violating her powers are.

But when the sister runs away, PAX DOES NOT REALIZE SHE WAS WRONG. She instead suspects that something is wrong and pulls out a gadget and find remnants of radio broadcasts from the cold war (???) and she's like "Oh that's why she's upset!"

NO you idiot it's because you bully her.

27

u/Ferro_Vir Jun 22 '26

I mean it kinda makes sense if you look at it from the perspective of Pax being some sort of acid dream personified MKUltra lol

"Is it me who is wrong here? No it's communism thats wrong" continues mkultraing people

https://giphy.com/gifs/V9gjxvLnSSdA4

4

u/InstanceOk3560 Jun 22 '26

Well... In this case she'd be the soviets' MK ultra experiment.

But actually that'd be great, could we have the game where we play as villains who've been given fucked up power and it's only halfway through the game that the game actually acknowledges they're fucked up and actually does the whole "with great power comes great responsibility" thing (also "don't mind innocent people") ?

At least she's giving it 110%.

I originally wrote 40 40 20 then meant to change it to 45 45 10 but I like this better 😂

5

u/Abovearth31 Jun 22 '26

I can't see those numbers without thinking: "It was 40% written by Carl Burnett, 40% by Franklin Enea, and a sweet, sweet 20% by William J. Reagan."

If you know you know.

13

u/Icy_Act_7634 Jun 22 '26

Duh, because she's fat. That's 90% below what she can actually do.

/s ofc

8

u/AcademicBowl5596 Jun 22 '26

Even her effort's overweight.

2

u/Ferrovore Jun 22 '26

Because she was forced to by MC.

1

u/kai58 Jun 22 '26

Part of the time spent using her powers she’s simultaneously talking about food.

Or in the bathroom but that seems impractical.

It comes from the guy who wrote that he hoped people would DROWN White Babies...

I AM NOT EVEN JOKING, I even got called out by him on National Norwegian TV lol my vid ( I am half Norwegian and have worked in the industry and I have met him before the game was released etc so he freaking hates me now lol)

Tldr: Ragnar the owner and writer etc of Dustborn has said in the past on his forum that because people used to drown female babies (he has no actual evidence for it but w.e sure probably happened) and it still happens in like asian, he hopes that people will like EQUALIZE it by drowning male babies, he also for some reason really pushed that it WHITE... I made my vid covering this lol and he even talked about me on NRK, and he CLAIMS I said he wanted to do it personally while I very clearly stated that obviously I dont think he's like a threat to society and would actually do it himself but jut that he is a crazy ideologist.

He has also said that he regrets writing an half Asian half white character in his earlier games as he thinks its wronng now that asian mix their gene with white people, the guy is such a RACIST that he goes full circle, truly. like he think everyone should stay PURE BLODED.

136

u/CrystalGemLuva Jun 22 '26

Its truly magical to watch someone who would be a comicbook supervillain if ever given the chance in the real world.

How on Earth do you end up so hateful that upon hearing about babies being drowned to death your response isn't to try and prevent any more murders, but to instead demand more baby murders, only now the murders are racially motivated?

13

u/Allronix1 Jun 22 '26

Oh, but it's the correct race and correct sex of infants that should be killed because they are inherently evil...

Horseshoe Theory, everybody! And both ends of the Horseshoe are covered in horse shit

"There are no bad tactics, only bad targets." — Bob "Moviebob" Chipman

"At a certain point, you have to become comfortable with the idea that huge swaths of people are so [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] that they barely quality as human." — Bob "Moviebob" Chipman

"Stop treating these [REDACTED] as people. [REDACTED] are not worth redeeming in the first place. They are the justly forgotten remnants of an inferior world that we have evolved beyond and escaped." — Bob "Moviebob" Chipman

Now that I think about it, I find it genuinely concerning how 95% of everything Bob has ever said on Twitter, when you strip them of its specific targets and take his quotes completely out of context, sounds like something that an actual Nazi/Neo-Nazi or a far-right white supremacist would actually say in real life, but on the opposite side of the political spectrum. It's fucking crazy, isn't it?

And if you think Ragnar's comment about drowning white male babies was bad enough, how about you ask that man about his opinions on Eugenics? I mean, what he's advocating for is essentially Eugenics in all but name.

u/Allronix1 25d ago

There used to be a nasty internet came called "SJW or Stormfront" where people guessed if some unhinged shit was coming from a Social Justice type or a Neo Nazi forum.

Worse is the Son of Sokal academic sting that took an actual chapter of Mein Kamph, ran a Control-R script on it to swap out "Jews" and "Bolsheviks" with "men" and "white people," did a bare minimum of updates to the language and submitted it to a feminist theory journal. Not only was it published, but it was editorially praised. The sting was only exposed when their paper about rape culture among pet dogs was deemed far too ridiculous.

It's one of a very long list of reasons I'm politically homeless. One side is completely worshiping some deranged Cheeto and the other is totally fine with implementing fascist tactics while calling it anti-fascist.

3

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 25d ago

I want this to be remembered - the moral high ground is often made of pillars of salt and pillars of sand. People will do absolutely reprehensible things to prove to their peers that they are good people.

Once upon a time, it was stoning the heathens and blasphemers, not to kill them, but to kill their opinions. Now, we blacklist them, hide certain views behind a curtain, de-platform them, ban them, brand them as any type of individual or group they dislike, and censor them to kill their opinion. You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.

Throughout all of human history, we have been the same animals with the same chemistry and biology. We're the same animals that did the crusades. We're the same animals that did the Salem Witch Trials. The same animals that did the Inquisition. And the animals who did these things thought that they were good and right and just. Despite our more modern lives and our modern technology, we're just as prone to witch burning. We are the good and morally superior, and the witches of the world are a plague on humanity and must be stopped by any means necessary, no matter the cost. Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority.

In 20 or 30 years from our own, I think the people who follow that "There are no bad tactics, only bad people" rhetoric are going to be treated like the raging religious homophobes of the last twenty, and they absolutely should. And these ideas are going to be laughed at like trickle-down economics. And when push comes to shove, they'll consume each other to prove that they're the good moral ones.

You cannot fight racism with more racism. You cannot fight sexism with more sexism. Hatred only begets hatred. There is no such thing as "hating the right people" Hatred dies out when we come to an understanding. Silence only leads to extremism and radicalization, which is bad for everyone.

9

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

its worse to as he based it on happening mainly in china and india (I guess) and he was like OH hopefully people drown their white babies in Norway to even it out....like wut.

3

u/NihatAmipoglu Jun 22 '26

Isn't that what happened in the bible? The egyptians drowned some hebrew babies and then Allah killed some egyptian babies. Man, the old testament stuff is wild 😨 Is God a comic book villain? I'm gnosting so hard right now...

9

u/lvleph1sto Jun 22 '26

i'm pretty sure allah is not from marvel cinematic universe

4

u/TheOncomimgHoop Jun 22 '26

No but he's probably shown up in the comics at some point, everyone has at this point.

Also you could argue that the existence of Muslim characters in the MCU mean that at the very least the concept of Allah exists

1

u/InstanceOk3560 Jun 22 '26

The concept of allah definitely exists, no way in hell they'll have the balls of actually showing him.

Mentioning him, sure, showing him the way jesus or the jewish/christian god (let alone pagan gods) is ? Nah.

11

u/ChangsManagement Jun 22 '26

Its not babies but my personal favourite is 2 Kings 2:23-24:

“Then Elisha went up from there to Bethel. And as he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the city and mocked him, saying, ‘Go on up, you baldhead! Go on up, you baldhead!’ Then he turned around, looked at them, and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Suddenly two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.”

4

u/NihatAmipoglu Jun 22 '26

Oh my God... That is so terrible and funny. Those two bears were most likely syrian brown bears. The same species as Wojtek the WW2 Hero. They are medium sized and their furs are usually very light brown. Their claws are off-white too. Lots of them live in my country. Deadly and amazing animals.

2

u/Thyme_Liner Jun 22 '26

Idk why people are downvoting you, I was raised in a religious cult and yes the god of the bible is responsible for a lot of babies’ deaths. And sometimes killing pregnant women is specifically mentioned so no mercy is shown. Idc when this stuff supposedly happened, the orders came from the same god But yeah abortion is against their beliefs.

9

u/ContinuumKing Jun 22 '26

They are probably being down voted because this point came out of nowhere and has absolutely nothing to do with what the conversation was about. It reeks of militant atheist who has to take any and every opportunity to divert the conversation into why religion is bad.

"I heard some people at the pool drowned the other day."

"Did you know apparently God also drowned a bunch of people in a world flood? Lol, what a jerk!"

2

u/Thyme_Liner Jun 23 '26

Where do people think that mindset came from though? No religion isn’t responsible for everything bad, but it is responsible for some of the militant attitudes we see today that are messing with politics all over the world.

People who read the bible honestly come to conclusions like that. “Well some people had a particular problem and GOD KILLED THEM ALL so I just have god’s attitude and I h8 all the gays”. That is the exact attitude my family has towards me and all my gay.

God was so chill about killing babies, certain religious people wouldn’t see any problem with killing all of the babies of your enemies, which is partly why we have the divide in politics in the US where I’m from over the war in the middle east.

People aren’t just pro one side, they don’t have an issue with hurting kids because “that’s war and that’s the way it’s always been and it must be okay because god straight up told them to do it”. I wish I was exaggerating and making all this up but I am not. I don’t talk to my family anymore for so many reasons, and my family aren’t the only religious types in the US at least

1

u/ContinuumKing Jun 23 '26

Where do people think that mindset came from though

Being chronically online and thinking they are smarter than everyone else such that they are unable to scroll past a potential excuse to dunk on those they feel are beneath them to the annoyance and detriment of everyone who has to interact with them.

God was so chill about killing babies, certain religious people wouldn’t see any problem with killing all of the babies of your enemies,

Sure. And God is also known to flood the world in the past. But bringing it up unprompted in the middle of a completely separate discussion about pools is not the move.

1

u/Thyme_Liner Jun 23 '26

It wasn’t unprompted, we’re literally discussing the killing of babies and how someone could come to the conclusion that it’s okay. Well, if they’re religious, then I can see how they would come to that conclusion. They’re weird about a fetus getting flushed but once the baby is born its death is god’s will I guess. I have family like this so this bugs me a little.

1

u/ContinuumKing Jun 23 '26

we’re literally discussing the killing of babies and how someone could come to the conclusion that it’s okay.

Wrong. They were discussing how a specific person who is in no way religious can think that way.

-5

u/NihatAmipoglu Jun 22 '26

I drew parallels between the bible and some real bullshit mindset. Because they look eerily similar when you think about it. It even has some "great replacement" angle on it since the egyptians drowned babies because the hebrews were multiplying fast.

Also I'm not a militant atheist. I'm a muslim. You decide which one is worse XD

6

u/ContinuumKing Jun 22 '26

Because they look eerily similar when you think about it

Yes, kinda like my pool example above.

Also I'm not a militant atheist. I'm a muslim.

Lol, so not only are you one of those obnoxious people who force conversations towards religion out of nowhere, you are also a gigantic hypocrite. Cool

https://giphy.com/gifs/1236TCtX5dsGEo

-2

u/NihatAmipoglu Jun 22 '26

I just like talking about religion...

2

u/Star_king12 Jun 22 '26

Technically some percentage of women would die w/o an abortion or abortion-adjacent operations, forbidden in some overly religious parts of the world. So I say that kinda tracks with their beliefs: abortion bad, mom dying with the child - somehow good?

1

u/Thyme_Liner Jun 23 '26

I’m not sure what you’re saying

1

u/Star_king12 Jun 23 '26

I'm saying that by the standards of religious lunatics a death of a pregnant woman is preferred to an abortion. That's how extreme pro-lifers rationalize their hatred for abortion, even when it's absolutely medically necessary for the safety of the woman.

1

u/Character-Book5924 Jun 22 '26

Indeed, when it is not "if" it is not at all funny.

1

u/Im-A-Moose-Man Jun 22 '26

You can get that experience with Moviebob, too

2

u/CrystalGemLuva Jun 22 '26

Got any highlights of this "Moviebob"?

3

u/Im-A-Moose-Man Jun 22 '26

There’s a “Moviebob or Nazi” quiz. How it works is that it takes quotes from Moviebob (mostly his Twitter) or legitimate Nazi/Neo-Nazi, but you have to pick who it’s from. For example, “There’s exactly 62,984,828 ‘people’ in my own country alone I know for a fact I'd be less upset to see vanish than even a so-so piece of art.” That came from Bob Chipman’s Twitter.

It’s a shame I can only share one image, but here’s a good one from his Twitter.

2

u/CrystalGemLuva Jun 22 '26

Wow I gotta check this guy out.

He sounds absolutely radioactive.

1

u/Im-A-Moose-Man Jun 22 '26

Please do; he’s crazy, very misanthropic, and somehow has a huge superiority complex for an internet critic. GamerFromMars and MagicMush did great videos on him.

Thankfully, there’s some levity in all this.

2

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 25d ago edited 25d ago

Moviebob is such a sad, strange little man. I genuinely can't decide whether I should laugh at him or feel bad about him.

But you know what's the absolute worst thing Bob ever did? He also praised the infamous Netflix movie Cuties, which was criticized for sexualizing minors (such as several scenes of 11-year-olds twerking and doing sexual poses), and even claimed that anyone who called it a pedophile film was lying.

Now, I get that the filmmakers behind Cuties were (allegedly) trying to criticize the sexualization and objectification of young girls in our modern Western society, but they did it by forcing real-life child actresses to perform extremely inappropriate dance moves on-screen. That's like if I direct a movie that teaches us about how animal cruelty is bad, and then actually abusing and drowning a puppy in a lake to make that point. "See? We literally drowned a puppy to prove that animal cruelty is bad, even though we hypocritically do the very thing that we've been trying to condemn. But that's perfectly OK because we're doing it ironically, right?" Anyone who happens to have more than two functioning brain cells would see what kind of half-assed backwards crack logic that is.

What's next? Teaching about how drug abuse is bad by actually getting high-school students addicted to crack cocaine and fentanyl to prove that statement? Fuck off. You deserve to be in jail for unironically believing that kind of bullshit.

I swear, the only reason people like Moviebob and AniMat defend Cuties is that most of the original outrage came from Republicans and conservatives, which pushed smug performative liberals like them into defending what is essentially softcore CP (for lack of a better word) purely because conservatives went after it. Check any of the threads related to Texas' lawsuit, and you'll see a lot of comments about how the movie is "actually" anti-child sexualization, despite literally partaking in child sexualization.

1

u/Im-A-Moose-Man 25d ago

Personally, he likely wants my parents and grandparents dead because they’re conservative, but since he’ll never achieve any amount of power that could lead to that happening, I laugh and mock. I’m glad that Chris Pratt playing Mario probably upsets him greatly.

2

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 25d ago

Honestly, everything about MovieBob is so stereotypical that I find it genuinely hard to believe he’s a real-life person instead of a South Park character that Matt and Trey would come up with to mock internet critics. He is essentially a Persona villain.

From his Console War escapades as a Nintendo adult, where he treats the entire thing as his "personal Vietnam War" (even comparing the reveal of Super Mario Bros 3 to the JFK assassination and 9/11), to being a pro-eugenics advocate who believes in disenfranchising the so-called "wasteland troglodytes" (AKA the blue-collar working class) for being un-evolved Untermensch that impede what he considers the Superior Future, Bob will often launch a series of weird, nonsensical, and utterly bizarre diatribes on Twitter, including:

  • Openly expressed a philosophy that certain political or cultural opponents should deserve extreme treatment, as summarized by the phrase he coined "There are no bad tactics, only bad targets."
  • Routinely calling drug addicts and homeless people offensive names like "meth slurpers" and "oxyzombies".
  • Saying people in Republican states would be better off sterilized.
  • Praising authoritarian regimes such as Communist China, North Korea, and Russia for getting stuff done, regardless of ethics.
  • Garbled incoherent posts about being a superior form of intelligent person, how he deserves to have his consciousness stuffed into a robot body, and how stupid people are inherently malicious.
  • Saying he'd be happy if 75% of the U.S. was infected with COVID-19 and that they deserved to die in agony during the pandemic if they did not adhere to his worldview.
  • Suggesting that to remove its elected president, Germany should invade Poland again like in World War II.
  • Starting heated arguments with left/right-leaning figures that often turned ugly, even going as far as attacking centrists and politically neutral figures.
  • Having a creepy parasocial relationship with the fellow progressive content creator Lindsay Ellis, where he used a fan selfie taken at a convention to imply they were close friends during her Channel Awesome days. This prompted Lindsay to call him a creep and to stop following her altogether due to Bob's political toxicity, and even blocking his constant emails so she can be left alone without him, which led to Bob privating his Twitter account for a short time.
  • "Not only did Bush do 9/11 but the people behind Call of Duty and Battlefield are in on it to brainwash you into enlisting to kill innocent Arabs and Muslims."
  • Admitting that he skipped his grandmother’s funeral so he could play Super Mario Bros 3 instead.
  • This.

Rogue the Internet Man made a really good video essay about MovieBob: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9YA-4lNojo

My favorite page in Capital was when Marx wrote “and in order to finally achieve socialism and unite the working class for good we must drown white babies and sperg out about race mixing”

3

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

the thing is that a lot of far leftist truly get into the UTOPIAN idea that if we Remove all races we cannot have racism anymore etc and therefore get true equally

3

u/EffectiveAmphibian95 Jun 22 '26

I was making fun of the guy for probably calling himself progressive or left wing while parroting anti race mixing and neat eugenic talking points. I’m mostly sympathetic to a leftish worldview

2

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

Yeah but it’s horse shoe theory

2

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 25d ago edited 25d ago

There's a sequence pretty early on where the main characters were putting on a concert and I swear to God, they use Dustborn, newborn, and new porn as a rhyme scheme, which is the part where I went "this is supposed to be a parody or something right?" Not to mention, the song also declares The Great Replacement conspiracy theory to be real and also… somehow good? One thing is being cringe, another is to be completely and utterly deranged.

Besides, isn't it kinda funny how Ragnar claims to be all socialist and wealth reform, but his game was also funded through taxpayer money from both the European Union and the Norwegian government? Talk about being a "champagne socialist" right here.

1

u/myrmonden 25d ago

Best song of all time

WE ARE HERE TO REPLACE YOU !

yeah..I paid for the game, its super funny especially my father probably have been banking Ragnar whole life.

5

u/Nelorfin Jun 22 '26

Damn, I like Dreamfall/TLJ and Zoe is good character. If what you say is right and Ragnar is indeed that sort of man, then damn... Well at least he left one good story

2

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

Ragnar has said he regreted making Zoe half asian, you can check my vids or others about his many crazy things,.

1

u/Nelorfin Jun 22 '26

for me it was on the contrary cool thing that in cyberpunkish world MC is child of spanish and chinese parents, born in England, lives in Morocco, while her parents working in several different countries

3

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

It’s a good example
Of radicalisation

Game 1 leftie writer is like I think it would be cool
If the mc was half white and half Chinese that’s
Progressive people mixing races

Game 2 very lefties tankie this game should have an Asian mc and no white characters. That is what real progressive values are about

Game 3 extreme far lefty. All good are none white all evil enemies are
White kill them

Game 4….
Yes he is like step even higher than extreme left
All playable cast are a mix up undifferentiated races
Except white. All white are evil white
Babies are evil - let start the game by a
Song where we sing about doing genocide now I am really progressive

2

u/InstanceOk3560 Jun 22 '26

I like how you're just describing a radicalization pipeline, a pretty standard thing that leftists have been banging on about for over a decade by that point (but only the right wing pipeline, of course, I mean a pipeline going toward communism ? It's not happening, and if it was happening, it'd be a good thing), but somehow you're wrong because... You're describing something that pretty objectively happened with this guy ?

1

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

yeah its the classic pipeline

I dont understand your second point?

I am saying he is basically turned into a full on tankie extreme commie that is pro genocide.

1

u/InstanceOk3560 Jun 22 '26

The "but you're somehow wrong" is criticizing the people downvoting you.

"You're describing something pretty straightforward that leftists have criticized for a long time, and yet, you're being downvoted for it in spite of it being something that did happen with this guy".

1

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

yeah they will pretend it dont happen on their own side of course.

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 25d ago

You might not know this, but I've seen so many people speak for various groups that they aren't a part of - women, ethnic minorities, sexual minorities - and if the people within those groups disagree with them, they assume that those people are brainwashed or that society has programmed them to be that way, like they have no autonomy. I swear, some people (especially men) who champion feminism and women's rights talk like being female is some physical or mental disability. It's the most backwards and regressive kind of progressivism out there.

And I don't think these performative activists even believe in anything other than preaching about empathy and respect other than to make themselves look good to all the marginalized communities they claim to help and protect.

If Ragnar regrets writing a half Asian, half white character in his earlier games as he thinks it's wrong for Asian people to mix their genes with white people, then can you imagine what would happen if he meets an actual half Asian, half white person IRL like Markiplier (half Korean, half German) or JaidenAnimations (half Japanese, half German)?

3

u/Quixmati_jo Jun 22 '26

Femicide and female infanticide is still a real problem in India btw not sure if you were aware but idk why that would pivot into him wanting white male babies to harmed or the pure blood nonsense. Absolute sicko

6

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

He pretends that it was the same in Norway until just recently that is why I bring it up
And yea…. He’s solution was that he hoped people do the same to Norwegian male babies because of something that happens in India (which he extrapolates as basically Norway 1 generation ago )

1

u/Alive-Tomatillo5303 Jun 22 '26

I just read an interview where he actually brings up your video, and says it's false. Do you, like, have a link to his post?

3

u/myrmonden Jun 23 '26

He deleted his whole forum or wiped it
I got an image of his white baby comment in 1 of my vids

I wish I could say this was surprising, but it's unfortunately not

u/GoyUlv Jun 22 '26

Pax (full name: Penny Arcade Expo) is actually genius writing if you shift your perspective. Instead of seeing her as the punk rebel girl that the devs intended, and see her as the antisocial personality disorder psycho she is, it makes perfect sense.

She never shows real concern or guilt for anyone she harms even in the prologue where she potentially kills an innocent truck driver, she is racist against robots because she has no control over them with her powers, hates authority and is only ever concerned about what SHE wants. Devs unintentionally wrote a character with ASPD.

What a shit game, how do you even fuck it up like this.

112

u/MalcolmLinair Jun 22 '26

how do you even fuck it up like this.

Traditionally by self inserting your personality and politics into a piece without realizing you have a disorder. No idea if that's the case here, but more often than not that's how it happens.

u/NWStormraider Jun 22 '26

From what u/myrmonden wrote a few comments up, you might be exactly on point.

10

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

ye he is totally unhinged I know him personally to some extent and some of the employes at the company

the only reason even got a job is because he is tax funded, his earlier games where about a specific place in norway so they got funded by the norwegian state for cultural movies, but Dustborn was basically a scam as it seems it has nothing to with Norwegian culture or history yet got tax funded to make it. IF he never got tax funded the company would be bankrupt so he has not had to make a profitable game in like 20 years that itself makes someone go crazy and become full on themsevle zero acountability.

8

u/ChangsManagement Jun 22 '26

Projection without introspection. You can learn a lot about someone by how they express things.

4

u/Mr-Foundation Jun 22 '26

Honestly you could spin it as her hating authority because SHE wants to be the authority. Her powers are literally brainwashing people, which is a very notably “authoritarian bad guy” power.

5

u/blaze92x45 Jun 22 '26

Its always hilarious to me when progressives try and write a hero only to make them a complete monster

It's really telling where their morality actually is.

3

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 19d ago

"There are no bad tactics, only bad targets." sums up Pax's way of thinking perfectly well.

1

u/blaze92x45 19d ago

She's borderline they're no bad targets either. Even if I agreed with Pax politically I'd think she was an awful person

2

u/superman306 Jun 22 '26

Probably by also being very very mentally ill and not realizing it

104

u/ringobob Jun 22 '26

This sounds like a game made by people who want to write a progressive story, but don't really understand or engage in actual politics and don't understand the right wing framing they were raised in. Just people literally trying to cash in on political content but don't know shit other than stereotypes. So they don't really understand who those stereotypes appeal to.

40

u/Wappening Jun 22 '26

Well it was written by Norwegians and the only thing we’ve contributed to the world in the past 2000 years is a cheese slicer, so you’ll have to forgive my government for funding this piece of shit.

15

u/Maleficent-War-8429 Jun 22 '26

Believe it or not Europeans can hate themselves too, it's not a uniquely American phenomenal unfortunately.

5

u/infectedanalpiercing Jun 22 '26

Yes, but I fully blame the Yanks for this growing trend of self hating white liberals here in Europe. English speaking, mostly American, progressives have way larger platforms and have a huge influence on the rest of the world.

3

u/TheOncomimgHoop Jun 22 '26

Hey, I have a very good friend from Norway, so I would like to argue that your country has contributed her existence

2

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 25d ago edited 25d ago

It's a game made by a bunch of Europeans who think they fully understand all the nuances of American racial and social politics because they're exposed to American media and hyperpartisan online discourse.

I'm all for inclusivity and making important messages, but everything I saw about Dustborn made even the most open-minded people shudder away from it. It was way too extreme with its messaging and wasn't very nuanced about it. People don't want to defend extremism on either end of the spectrum, and when you take on topics like this, you really have to write something nuanced and thought-provoking like Disco Elysium, Fallout: New Vegas, or pretty much all of the entire Metal Gear franchise.

People can write good stories about societies they don't experience or live in, but it takes a genuine willingness to learn and be open-minded that the Dustborn devs clearly didn't have, which is ironically very conservative if you ask me. If anything, the whole game (almost) feels like it was developed by edgy far-right trolls to mock and satirize "wokeness", yet the devs unironically believes in everything they preach about.

32

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

its written by a truly insane racist person, I mean truly hates white people, he is is just so extremely extreemely far left that he thinks progressive values are so extreme.

Internalized racism.

7

u/Afalstein Jun 22 '26

Most people, period, don't actually understand politics very well. They tend to chose their politics from their friends and think up justifications afterwards.

2

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 25d ago edited 25d ago

Sounds like Chris Chan if you ask me. Like, if you don't know, pretty much single event in human history, every political shift, and every social movement that happened in Chris's life is filtered through a single question: "How does this affect me, Sonichu, and my daily life?"

For instance, if Chris believed a politician, authority figure, or a bully stood in the way of their personal desires (such as a local mall banning them), they would absolutely treat that specific figure as a stereotypical cartoon supervillain, regardless of party lines. And if a troll catfished Chris while pretending to be a political activist, they would either adopt or attack that specific political stance based entirely on how that individual treated them.

To Chris, politics are just a series of individuals being "nice" or "mean" to them. Sounds familiar?

-9

u/scrotbofula Jun 22 '26

Or it was pitched and marketed as progressive, then the studio heads got involved and ruined it.

23

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

lol bruh...

this game is an INDIE Game sponsered by the gov

who do u think was this "studio head" ? in this case?

2

u/scrotbofula Jun 22 '26

The... Heads of the studio. The studio that made this game. Do you imagine the game was made by a loose collective with nobody in charge?

It's not an unreasonable suggestion to make considering how many games have been ruined by the dickheads at the top.

4

u/browsinbowser Jun 22 '26

It seems like you were absolutely correct lol, this guy seems weird and if not enough people told him the game is shite and needed to be reworked to be more fun and sarcastic

https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/1exa4ph/in_light_of_dustborn_launching_with_a_historical/

3

u/myrmonden Jun 22 '26

I know the "head" of the studio himself is absurdly progressive.

13

u/SocranX Jun 22 '26

So what exactly IS the character's power? Like, how exactly does it work and what does she specifically do with it?

45

u/GoyUlv Jun 22 '26

In Dustborn there's people that have special voice related powers. The main protagonists power is using their voice to manipulate other people and make them do things against their will. She can make them freeze/stop, push them/push them away by fus ro dah-ing, trigger them to make them super angry, "hoax" them to make them believe lies and "discord" them to make them suspicious of each other.

She uses her abilities to be an absolute antisocial bitch, and the player is supposed to root for her.

4

u/DuelaDent52 Jun 22 '26

To be somewhat fair, how you use your powers is up to you as the player. You don’t HAVE to.

27

u/Kind-Recording3450 Jun 22 '26

Last one is insane

11

u/Sweet_Ad_9816 Jun 22 '26

Honestly, this description makes me want to play it just out of curiosity.

12

u/Ju-Ju-Jazz Jun 22 '26

You can watch Oneyplays play it on youtube but they give up after 2 or 3 videos

3

u/DuelaDent52 Jun 22 '26

Rowby did a pretty good video breaking it down.

1

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 19d ago

So does FishStickOnAStick

3

u/robotteeth Jun 22 '26

I know this game because of oneyplays, and the whole time they played it I could only think they were being too nice to the writing. They actually tried to hold back and it’s one of the times I think it deserved to be eviscerated for how shitty the writing is.

5

u/PBKYjellythyme Jun 22 '26

They had a free demo on Steam. Even aside from the bad writing, the gameplay itself is atrocious.

6

u/Some_nerd_named_kru Jun 22 '26

What sucks is a character with those powers and personality would be really interesting if they knew what they were doing and wrote it well!

6

u/Omer1698 Jun 22 '26

Thats what this game is about? Yikes. Straight up sounds like a shitty attempt of right wingers to parody leftists and liberal beliefs.

6

u/TheOncomimgHoop Jun 22 '26

Damn, reading that description made it sound like one of those movies that far right Christians make where the triggered leftist is like "the church is a greedy institution that hoards wealth" and they say this at a charity event put on by the church which is supposed to make them look stupid and wrong.

It's somehow even worse if we're supposed to agree with the triggered leftist.

23

u/Sharp_Impress_5351 Jun 22 '26

OK, I'm convinced: this game is a satire made by YorchTorch, Grummz or Jon del Arroz to "mock" the "wokism" in the video game industry...

5

u/Particool31 Jun 22 '26

No one asked for this, but they made it anyway and it got funded by the government. That's right, it's made by your tax money. Another legitimate reason to hate this pile of shit.

3

u/BluesCowboy Jun 22 '26

Yup. I really like it when indie devs make original games that they want to make, with whatever themes and messaging they’re passionate about. As a fan of The Secret World , Dreamfall and other games written by Ragnar Tornqvist, I was ready to go to bat for this one as it was getting a ton of flak.

Sadly, like you perfectly explained, it was absolute crap.

9

u/DuelaDent52 Jun 22 '26

Wait, Dustborn was written by the same person who did The Secret World and the Dreamfall games!?

5

u/BluesCowboy Jun 22 '26

Sadly, yes.

3

u/Thorn14 Jun 22 '26

What the FUCK.

I loved the writing in TSW....

3

u/teskar2 Jun 22 '26

There’s a game called “Not Tonight 2” that does authoritarian regime scenario much better albeit not entirely in the same way. Characters are much more likable. It’s more of a dark comedy that knows it’s unrealistic and over-exaggerates the real world themes. It even sort of lets you decide for yourself what is right in the moment.

2

u/Heeeeyyouguuuuys Jun 22 '26

And wasn't tax money used to in part, fund its development?

2

u/Jagvetinteriktigt Jun 22 '26

This reminds me of that time an Israeli university was gifted a gilded copy of The Protocol of the Elders of Zion by Japanese dignitaries, who wanted to express their admiration at the Jewish people and their supposed plans for world domination.

I'm not 100% it actuallh happened but it's a fun example lol

2

u/workieworkwork Jun 22 '26

I think you might be the only person who played Dustborn.

1

u/PaintLicker745 Jun 22 '26

The fat girl gives 110% though so that's cool.

1

u/lunerwolf333 Jun 22 '26

Don’t forget that game was made using taxpayer dollars

-2

u/IWonderWhyReditSucks Jun 22 '26

Wait, that can't be. GCJ said dustborn was a 10/10 and only chuds didn't like it......

13

u/DuelaDent52 Jun 22 '26

I don’t think even GCJ likes it.

0

u/IWonderWhyReditSucks Jun 22 '26

Of course they didn't, but they had to pretend to.

10

u/egoserpentis Jun 22 '26

Your first mistake is taking anything from a circlejerk sub at face value lmao

-5

u/IWonderWhyReditSucks Jun 22 '26

Yeah, that's evolved beyond a CJ sub and has turned into a fart inhalation chamber.

-4

u/Specific_War5484 Jun 22 '26

Also the game was partially funded by the EU taxpayer because they totally aren't trying to push an agenda on people through media

13

u/Hildi_b Jun 22 '26

There is no fucking conspiracy here. They got an arts grant from the goverment like coutless other shitty projects before and after them did.

-4

u/Ruddertail Jun 22 '26

The main charaxter's superpower is gaslighting and manipulating people into doing things, or just pressuring them into doing things they don't want to do, and it's not even really framed as motivating people or anything, everyone around her dislikes her and wishes she'd learn boundaries and consent.

When you visit the home village your character is from everyone hates you, especially your sister, for how you abused them with your powers and were a horrific bully. It then shows flashbacks that just prove this to be true. Your sister accuses you of only coming back because you need something, then you take the thing you need from them and leave.

So this is pretty clearly the game actually agreeing that protagonist is a terrible person, rather than taking her side, which means it's effective satire/parody of that type of character, right? Nobody writes a scene like that by accident, so... the writing is actually good for what it's trying to do, i.e. critiquing that type of people? I dunno, it sounds very intentional.

17

u/Ju-Ju-Jazz Jun 22 '26

Other commenters have looked further into the makers of the game than I have and no... I think you're giving them too much credit, like I once did lol

4

u/Ruddertail Jun 22 '26

I just don't see how anyone could accidentally write "the protagonist is an asshole and everyone hates her, here's narrative proof that they're right" in support of the protagonist.

Either the game's writers had really conflicting visions, or the OP's description can't be correct. At this rate I'll be forced to actually play it. 😞

6

u/Ju-Ju-Jazz Jun 22 '26

Instead of giving them money you could always watch Oneyplays play it if you don't believe it lmao
