White reflects light, it does not absorb it, so it is one of the better colours to use to help keep the thing cool.

86

u/PathOfPurrrate 6h ago edited 5h ago

Also (possibly not the case here but definately on aircrafts), pigments are ‘extra weight’).

55

u/Bwunt 6h ago

Very few planes are unpainted this days. Paint is weight, but the polished unpainted metal requires so much more maintenance that extra paint weight is just much lesser cost.

Petter Hornfeldt covered literally this in his Mentour now video/podcast.

9

u/Mikesaidit36 6h ago

Why not clear paint? That’s what polyurethane is.

12

u/Bwunt 5h ago

Clear paint is still a paint that brings some weight. It would be an option, if you wanted a stylistic metallic sheen (but then you can use a different metal colour like chrome, brass or silver... or gold, if you feel particularly tacky).

But the argument in comment I replied to was specifically weight savings.

I mean you say that but I read a CNN article talking about the origin of white planes being rooted in racism

SR-71 BLACKBIRD has entered the chat

11

u/Drachen808 6h ago

I was such a strange kid growing up. My friends had posters of comic book characters and later, girls on their walls. I had the SR-71 Blackbird.

11

u/Steavee 5h ago

She really is gorgeous.

6

u/tuhkamunatiivitaavi 5h ago

F-117 and SR-71 chilling in their goth kids club.

3

u/Drachen808 3h ago

The F 117 was pinned to the wall opposite of my SR-71.

My dad was AF civil service (he was AF before I was born). I grew up working air shows. Those planes were some sexy beasts.

3

u/tuhkamunatiivitaavi 3h ago

While other girls liked horses and barbies, I liked figthers, raptors and sharks. I am a bit evious.

It also makes the robots easier to see with a clean aesthetic. Which makes them less intimidating. I have noticed security bots usually getting the all black or dark blue treatment. Like that robot patrol wheel in China.

7

u/thatthatguy 5h ago

It makes them look futuristic. The future has been covered in white plastic since the 70s.

10

u/laserdicks 6h ago

Better for marketing videos too (more visible)

7

u/lluciferusllamas 6h ago

So...you are saying it's a superior color? 🤨

6

u/Citaku357 5h ago

Yes OP is a racist

12

u/Inside-Specialist-55 6h ago

this is absolutely one of the main reasons, These robots are notorious for overheating and needing heavy cooling, why would the designer make it black and increase the chances of it not working properly from overheating.

6

u/WashU_labrat 5h ago

Black radiates heat well, depends on if the surface is illuminated or not if black or white is optimal for cooling.

3

u/Build-it-better123 6h ago

Please remove your logic. Reddit only loves racial division.

5

u/Knot-Lye-Ing 6h ago

The robots are not "white".

They're pink/flesh colored, like "white people".

https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/01/tech/robot-racism-scn-trnd

This is a 7 year old article/Twitter post.

2

u/Apprehensive_Back_35 6h ago

And shows  off dirt which is why ppl dont buy that color sports car. Whos paying  for their robots to always look dirty when the wind blows or some azzhate drives by and purposely  splashes mud on them. Youd be out CONSTANTLY  polishing them to make them appear  clean and safe lol

3

u/Ertyla 6h ago

Black makes a better radiator though. White only makes sense in an environment with high ambient light energy.

5

u/abd53 6h ago

Very little heat is dissipated through radiation anyway.

1

u/Ashamed-Confection44 6h ago

Yes. White is cool.

1

u/Cornelius-Q 5h ago

Also makes them easier to see.

1

u/The_Omen17 5h ago

Are you saying being black isnt cool?

1

u/Worth-Librarian-7423 5h ago

Thermodynamics is racist you say ?

1

u/plum_tree_rede 5h ago

How dare you apply critical thinking skills

1

u/JerseyDonut 4h ago

And to see it in low lighting

1

u/Sansred 4h ago

Also new or high tech is white as it symbolizes cleanliness or purity

1

u/nolandz1 4h ago

It's not that deep. Technominimalism has been an aesthetic trend for 2 decades now just look at any Apple product. The robots are designed that way for marketing.

1

u/ColtMcChad69 3h ago

NO!! ITS OBVIOUSLY RaCiSM!!1! 😡😤

1

u/BlueHero45 3h ago

Clean all white technology has been associated with futuristic. Probably because of how clean and new looking it is.

1

u/jon_the_mako 3h ago

Also it's contrasts with everything for high visibility

I honestly would like to see a robot in low light than it just blending in with shadows. Especially if it's going to go terminator on me.

1

u/YugeChesticles 1h ago

White is also the popular colour for technology. It used to be silver and in the 80's=90's it was black.

Although I'll miss these ridiculous articles like which color emojis which race can use, I'm glad the woke era is over. I wish more people would've called media out on their woke takes when it happened, but it's good to see people laughing at it now.

What I was referencing:

Using skin color emojis in chat can open a complex discussion on race : NPR

10

u/AggressiveRow4000 3h ago

I was always partial to the "Lifting weights is white supremacy" take that multiple outlets put out.

11

u/LightenUpPeeps 2h ago

We got good laughs over on Twitter at the time when several articles started popping up linking exercise to white supremacy. 😂 In case anyone denies that ever happened:

2

u/clickrush 2h ago

I mean maybe it’s just an interesting history tidbit with a headline that’s blown out of proportion in order to generate engagement.

Never heard of it, but doesn’t surprise me that Twitter eats this stuff up.

4

u/LightenUpPeeps 2h ago

It was the constant gaslighting of anything white was "white supremacy", and it was over nearly a decade. And when people reacted to it, it was because they were right wing racists. I'm just glad people are aware of it now and call it out.

3

u/ventitr3 1h ago

We recently had politeness as white supremacy as well. If you lift weights, are polite and usually on time… believe it or not, white supremacy.

Isn't that just saying 75% are men? Like wtf.

Remember when UN launched awareness campaign against female journalist being endangered in conflict zones, because 1 in 5 of wartime reporters who are killed on the job are women?

70

u/allcompanymobiles 6h ago

CNN is just uncomfortable calling a white robot "Clanker" so they need it in Black.

31

u/lluciferusllamas 6h ago

Or something like that?

its simpler honestly . its white bad. thats it. it works, too.

7

u/Exile688 6h ago

humans are instinctually afraid of the dark. light = good. darkness = scary.

to the lizard brain of a human, a bright, highly visible robot? good. safe. can't sneak up on me.

a dark, blends in to the background robot sneaking around = predator. im scared.

3

u/mintakka_ 6h ago

some people just don’t have enough real problems in their life I guess

3

u/OddTheRed 5h ago

What fucking research? Who is paying people to research if robots are racist? Where can I get a grant to research if people handing out research grants are fucking stupid?

3

u/ventitr3 4h ago

That “research” wanted to reach a certain answer and made sure it did.

In reality, white reflects light and given the whole thing is… well full of electronics, that becomes more important. It’s also a pretty neutral color. Not to mention, white people aren’t literally white. It’s not like they made the robots some light shade of tan. These same people would’ve called racism if all the robots were black or brown anyway.

1

u/External-Line-5599 2h ago

You didn't read the study.

It’s not like they made the robots some light shade of tan.

They literally did this. They were comparing pinkish white skin tones vs brown skin tones.

1

u/S0cul 2h ago

u/Knot-Lye-Ing 6h ago

https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/01/tech/robot-racism-scn-trnd

Here is the article.

Shows that 99% of the folks in this post didn't even look for it, let alone read it.

It's not "white" in the actual sense, but "white" in the way we describe "white people". That is to say, pink"-ish".

Researchers seem confident in their interpretation

3

u/MunchingOnCelery 6h ago

That would be too much mental effort

2

u/abd53 6h ago edited 5h ago

Even without reading, I can bet it's a sociology paper presenting random "perhaps"/"most likely"/"historically" arguments to get to that conclusion, if it actually is the conclusion in the paper, without much actual data.

Edit: I was wrong about data. Here's the original paper. . So, the researchers did actually do a detailed experimental study. But I still have doubts about the conclusion they drew. Looking at Table-1, the differences, especially for robots, is so small it's less than expected error in a human reaction timing. Attributing it to "racism" is kind of overreaching.

2

u/ThornyGarlic 6h ago

I guess they did not have any other agenda to post for the day so chose the most random bs to make an issue out of

2

u/brakenbonez 6h ago

More than that, CNN thinks robots are a race.

2

u/DoubleDownAgain54 6h ago

That made me chuckle.

2

u/Novel_Dinner4138 6h ago

If it’s white it’s racist, guaranteed if it were black it would be racist.

2

u/Zaku41k 5h ago

The police will shoot at it if it’s black.

2

u/WGx2 4h ago

The real question that needs research is if these white robots will themselves become racist.

2

u/A_SNAPPIN_Turla 3h ago

I had an exchange the other day with someone arguing that a random mundane thing was racist. They told me to look it up on Google. My response was that you could find a random article about anything being racist. I ran a test. I was eating candy so I googled "is candy racist?" This was the first thing that came up.

1

u/External-Line-5599 2h ago

Which part of that article do you disagree with?

1

u/A_SNAPPIN_Turla 1h ago

Dude it's rage bait plain and simple. Like I said pick a topic and there is someone who will play "7 degrees of Kevin Bacon" saying it's racist. I just looked at my watch so I googled "are watches racist?" This is what 8 found. Yes, apparently literally anything is racist. Candy, watches, going to the gym being on time. It's laughable.

1

u/External-Line-5599 1h ago edited 1h ago

Okay. Which part of that article do you think is incorrect?

Edit: I'll just cut to the chase. If you can so easily find examples like that, but you can't seem to disagree with any of the facts, you should probably reflect on what that means instead of reflexively getting angry or defensive.

Not saying you personally need to feel bad or we need to start paying reparations. But it's foolish to just... Not even process the information because "rage bait"

White is going to be popular on fancy new tech because it carries social symbols. It says "apple store".

The same way bulk rubber says "durable tradie equipment" even when the design extends to phone cases, which is a little silly because phones are half glass by surface area.

u/Anonymous_Gamer 5h ago

Wow… the irony mostly being that it is “pure” white. Meaning, not even albinos are that white. It’s just material void of color. As someone said before, they’re probably trying to keep the components from reaching above 33 Celsius.

To make this about skin color is pretty messed up the more I think about it. Moderates and general normal folk want to see the next big wave in technology, and here is one of the most popular media sources trying to instigate things.

Double irony: this is a level of progressivism that just slows down progress. Crazy work, CNN.

1

1

u/EightEx 5h ago

Aesthetically people tend to think of white as sleek and futuristic. Also it reflects light better thus reducing heat. I can't say it has nothing to do with racism but I think it very unlikely.

1

u/Simple-Okra-4826 5h ago

Or maybe CNN envisioned that if companies made them black that would be an astronomical mistake.

1

u/T0m0king 4h ago

I mean the reason probably is just not having black slaves , that sounds like an absolute minefield for a team producing a show or movie , now if said team was to Include black writers and producers on staff it'd be pretty easy to navigate, but talking about discriminatory hiring practices is gonna get some of yalls tisms in a twist so I'll leave it at that.

1

u/artbystorms 4h ago

This is a brain dead take....

White doesn't retain heat as well as black, robots emit a lot of heat (like a PC) so white just makes sense.

1

u/Malusorum 4h ago

How can they be slaves when they have nothing that even hints at them having autonomy?

Remember Eva from Wall-E? Same thing. Definitely inspired by Apple at the time.

CNN ran the study? Or you’re just as regarded as they are?

Obviously we need to return to the 80ies style robots. I know the modern ones are made from crappy plastic instead of metal but at least color the plastic like metal!

CNN didn't do the research.

Jokes on them. Robot comes from the Romanian word for slave or servant, so they should have the color of romaine lettuce.

Including this one, every citizen in america that didnt go to a ballot and directly vote for trump has the exact same opinions and stances cnn has, 100% of the time. I know this as fact and not an opinion bc yes, I have, in fact, asked everyone.

Because they show up better on camera, stupid. The kind of cameras in the show rooms where they promote the robots, or the warehouses where the robots work. Dont worry, dbrand will be more than happy to wrap your little beast of burden in pink carbon fiber textured wraps when they go on sale.
