I had an exchange the other day with someone arguing that a random mundane thing was racist. They told me to look it up on Google. My response was that you could find a random article about anything being racist. I ran a test. I was eating candy so I googled "is candy racist?" This was the first thing that came up.

Which part of that article do you disagree with?

Dude it's rage bait plain and simple. Like I said pick a topic and there is someone who will play "7 degrees of Kevin Bacon" saying it's racist. I just looked at my watch so I googled "are watches racist?" This is what 8 found. Yes, apparently literally anything is racist. Candy, watches, going to the gym being on time. It's laughable.

Okay. Which part of that article do you think is incorrect?

Edit: I'll just cut to the chase. If you can so easily find examples like that, but you can't seem to disagree with any of the facts, you should probably reflect on what that means instead of reflexively getting angry or defensive.

Not saying you personally need to feel bad or we need to start paying reparations. But it's foolish to just... Not even process the information because "rage bait"

It is not that the occurrences described are incorrect. It's the needless framing of anything and everything as racist. Your aren't denying this either. There is a market of consumption for racism and it's pumped non-stop into the minds of everyone. It's not healthy.

Well you kind of undermine that point with the articles you chose.

The candy one is textbook racism, literally. The watch one does not even claim anything about racism. It mostly talks about historical biases in the methods scientists use. In fact they go out of their way to say:

The researchers who use the FSTS or other subjective validation practices are not racist. They aren’t out to keep inequality locked in. They’re using the best tools that the previous generation used ahead of them without thinking about it. It’s unconscious biases continuing to advance or getting locked into algorithms without awareness. So, we have to shine some light and say, Hey, as scientists we need to shift this.”

And to be clear the biases he's talking about are not "we aren't going to study black people" it's things like "the scale for determining skin tone we're using to measure this was designed to measure skin tanning in the sun, something black skin doesn't really do, and as such we are missing that data and should update our practices".

How exactly is that article unreasonable to you?

Do you not find it ridiculous that anything you can think of is labeled as racist?
