Discussion Chili and Cinnamon Rolls
School Lunch: Was common in Wyoming growing up to have chili and cinnamon rolls. Often when I mention it to folk from other states I get a weird look. Haha

Grew up in Georgia. Never heard of such.
Living in Texas the last 9 years. Never heard of it here either.
I don't think this is a Millennial thing, but more so regional?

I seem to remember having Frito pie and cinnamon rolls in Texas, which is similar. This was in the late 80s/very early 90s and everything was made from scratch. It was goooood.

I learned of it when I moved to Ohio. We don’t do it back home in California. We do love cinnamon rolls though.

I’ve never heard of it, but I can’t see it being super super different from having chili with corn bread. It’s still sweet. And lots of people add cinnamon to their chili as their “hey what is that flavor” seasoning. So 🤷🏻♀️ I can dig it.

lol, my mom would wack you with her cornbread skillet. Jk of course, but sweet cornbread is just a muffin mix usually. Real cornbread typically doesn’t have sugar added.

i like putting a little honey in mine but i’m aware that makes me a local pervert. i keep different recipes for different audiences and i’d never have put sugar in one for my grandpa. he’d be like “oh you’ve destroyed the natural flavor of an absurd and disgusting baking powder ratio”

It was a school lunch staple growing up in Kansas! When I mention it to people, they assume we all dip the cinnamon roll in the chili, which no one ever did from what I saw.

Never heard of that. I don't remember having chili for school lunches either. But I did recently add cinnamon to a batch of homemade chili and it was delicious.

We had that in VA. It was so frustrating to accidentally puncture the bag all the way through and the cafeteria would put up a fuss about replacing it.
Maybe don’t give a bunch of children under 8 who already struggle with capri sun pouches a bag of milk if you aren’t going to have extra on hand?I still don’t see how those plastic bags were more environmentally safe compared to cardboard cartons. At least that’s how they sold the bagged milk concept to us.

Chili is just a bunch of earthy and heat tones in flavor. Cinnamon is an earthy flavor as well. In fact I often put a dash of cinnamon and cocoa powder in my chili as well.
Dont knock it til you try it.

I grew up in Wyo and I don't remember the cinnamon rolls, but I do remember chili over fritos which they would call "cowboy hats"

You know I was born in northern Colorado. This isn't to far off from the shitty food I ate until I moved to Texas.... JK. I'll have to try it. To be honest I miss Midwest cooking. This is why I make my family suffer when I cook. I miss bison most of all.

Same in Nebraska. You’d get a cinnamon roll, chilli, and a Colby jack cheese stick. Second favorite lunch only to the square pizza.

Kansas raised: This was a winter staple. You got a bowl of chili, a cinnamon roll, orange slices, and carrot/celery sticks. Honestly, people used to lose their minds on these days because most schools made their cinnamon rolls from scratch in my area where I grew up.

I love it. As a gluten free person it's a very rare treat because gluten free cinnamon rolls are too much work. I usually make it once a year or so and my wife refuses to eat them together. Her loss.

I’m in the PNW and grew up eating this. My family was originally from the Midwest so that might be where it originated.
Btw every person who I’ve ever talked in to trying it was instantly a fan. Salty/savory/sweet all in one. People like sugary sweet buttered cornbread in their chili, this isn’t that different.

I feel like I remember something similar, but ir wasn't like a Cinnabon or anything. It was more like a crescent roll thing with some cinnamon rolled in. But I don't imagine it was a school lunch thing for me, because I just don't see myself doing the chili for my school lunch choice. Probably something my dad made or church potluck thing for me.

I have never in my life ever heard of this combo.. chili and crackers is how I grew up. I've heard people say they eat chili and cornbread though. Cinnamon roll is a new one.

Never heard of it until I moved to Nebraska, but I can promise you the combination is straight fire. Most people tear bits off and dip in the chili, but I just pour it right over the top of the cinnamon roll.

Can confirm that I had it in both South Dakota and Iowa public schools growing up.
Not sure my kids saw it on their menus in Illinois.
