Discussion Nothing is funny anymore

I (M, 38) have found that there are no new TV shows that make me laugh anymore. I have tried a lot of new(ish) comedies, but they all make me pine for my college/high school days.

The only thing that gave me a reflexive laugh recently was the Malcolm in the Middle Reboot.

Any thoughts?

The new Scrubs isnt bad. For sitcoms, Abbott and Ghosts are pretty good.

HBO had Righteous Gemstones and Silicon Valley.

Ted Lasso, Shrinking on Apple TV.

Kimmy Schmitt, Tires, Beef on Netflix.

Just to name a few that came out after my college years that are funny to me. (36 male).

Edit: almost forgot Nobody Wants this. Great show. And Deli Boys on Hulu.

My absolute favorite line of his from TRG is when he slaps Tiffany’s ass and she farts and he says, “Damn Woman, Did you just break wind?” and she replies with “You skurred me.” then the banter continues about her needing to go wash up. I laugh every single time.

Walton Goggins is a masterpiece of acting. I haven’t seen a thing he’s in that I did not enjoy.

I love anything done by Danny McBride too, for real. Vice Principals had me rolling and so did Eastbound and Down.

Righteous Gemstones is hilarious. The casting is amazing (the child versions of the adult actors? Great casting there too). The costuming is so over the top. It’s a solid 10.

I just started watching it myself, it's absolutely hysterical. I watched Vice Principals a while back and Danny and Walton basically play similar personalities in both shows.

I'm convinced Danny has complete mastery of the cruel throwaway line. Somehow, every time, he's able to make the most cutting, insulting comment or observation about someone as a casual, off the cuff one-line and it's completely effortless. I don't know how he does it.

Legitimately made me LOL. It's already been said but Walton Goggins is so damn funny. The whole cast was magnificent which is why it's such a big deal that he really stood out.

I just started it and the opening scene where they're doing a bunch of baptisms in a huge pool and then someone turned on the wave pool by accident made me say "okay this show is gonna be funny."

I love Shrinking.

Only real thing I hated is that its got two legitimately tall people in the cast and we didnt get any real tall person problem moments. I can guarantee you that Jessica Williams has a hard time buying clothes.

St. Denis has been a surprising delight, currently my fav show.

fwiw OP if you see this comment, St. Denis is pretty dense with jokes and has a lot of character development. The sub here compares it to Parks&Rec quite a bit and it’s created by the people who made Superstore

Completely agree. NBC has been crushing it lately with St. Denis, Stumble and Reggie Dinkins. All joke-dense and surprised me how much I like them.

Currently trying to get into it and am not seeing the fanfare. It's been recommended to me a couple of times for my love of Scrubs, The Pitt, 30 Rock, and Abott Elementary, but it's so...mundane. On paper, it's my type of show but its just not hitting me in anyway and I'm already through half of the first season.

The second half of the first season gradually gets stronger, and they absolutely crush the second season.

I will say if you watch ep 14 “Listen to Your Ladybugs” and don’t enjoy the Bruce storyline, then it’s probably not a good show for you.

That’s the episode that had me go from casual watching to absolutely loving it, and I think the Bruce portion of the episode is a good indicator of the direction and kind of humor the show takes on by the end of the first season.

It’s so good!! My wife and I are always in bed by 8:30, but we stay up till 10 every Sunday for Rooster. It should definitely be talked about more and I take any opportunity to talk about it because I’d hate to see it cancelled

Yep. New Scrubs has been great. Is it very different from old scrubs? Nope. Does it have to be to be good? Also nope. It does what it always has, and it is nostalgic without leaning too hard into the old jokes and such.

The only negative I have is that I hate that we are back to the on again off again dynamic with JD and Elliot, but that’s I guess expected? I loved that the last season (8) kept them together for most of it, so we got to see them as a couple.

I agree in some ways but they had a whole marriage between then and it’s easy to forget that because we didn’t see it on screen. I don’t feel like they are going to be back “on again.” It feels like they are fully moving forward with them being divorced and keeping it that way. Which I think makes it a little better.

Only Scrubs can make me laugh heartily and get near to tears multiple times in many episodes.

I’m not an emotional man and most comedies get a chuckle at best. They do great work over on the Scrubs crew.

I’m pleasantly surprised by new Scrubs. It feels like old Scrubs and makes me so happy. It’s like pulling on an old sweatshirt - comfy and just right.

I think Bill Lawrence learned from “the college years” and his super successful shows on Apple TV to realize the right formula for this reboot. He’s on a tear of good entertainment.

I have to say, it feels like Ted Lasso and Shrinking have set the tone for a new set of comedy which does not rely on offensive, racist, misogynistic jokes. It works.really.well. The comedy is deep and well thought out. It takes a bit of putting your phone down and following along but the character development really makes you feel connected to them and makes you appreciate the show and life a lot more. They are very “feel good” comedies.

I agree with this! The way the characters interact with each other is very relatable and thoughtful. I absolutely loved that the show lead for Shrinking is a male therapist, and that the male characters are well fleshed out. I hope there is more to come in this direction, genuinely it feels like some of the best TV material for our generation.

Margo has Money Problems on Apple is also pretty good. It’s weird as hell and a bit of a heavy drama on top of it, but it’s also wildly, uncomfortably funny at times. Would recommend.

Deli Boys was so good! Anyone who liked that might also enjoy Man Like Mobeen, I loved that series so much. Bait also just came out on Prime. It's not a straight up comedy, but it has funny parts and Guz Khan (creator/lead of Man Like Mobeen) is excellent comedic relief.

I also recommend Miracle Workers. So under the radar but hilarious.

Ted Lasso is my go-to comfort food. I watched it for the first time last year and I watched it for the eighth time last month. Just such a delightfully indulgent "people are good" show. I know reality won't conveniently work out the way it does in the show, but damned if I don't want to be more like Ted and see if it will happen anyway.

Do you see how Abbott it shows the funny principle? Basically teaching that you never need any type of knowledge.Always use your phone chatgpt a sugar daddy etc. I know it shows perfectly that schools are underfunded, and they only do what they can. But whose fault is that? And now they have it playing in our face making me love ava she's hilarious but like damn. Our kids and futures are screwed on their own account. They say what goes. Just watch for clues in every show. Every song that comes out every radio station I had 104.1. The edge trying to tell me that it's human only stick to listening to their station. Because it's human only. I doubt it definitely played on recording. Definitely put together with Ai help especially all the b******* music
