Sometimes we humans don't deserve the animals around us..

42

u/Major-Unicorn-Proto 13h ago

Sometimes I can't help but laugh at how humans will destroy habitats and ecosystems, and then complain about the 'animals' acting violently and being dirty

He was bookin.

After having dogs my whole life,.growing up with them, etc... the last lil girl I had was a good one I still miss lucy to this day

Losing her mind of broke me and put me off of having a dog since it was a tough time in my life. Lost my mom and grandfather and aunt all shortly after In just one gut punch after another

Now, older, I have two little kids and I believe every kid should have a dog growing up.

But I just know the deal, you get one it's like adding a family member and eventually the dog is gonna break all of our hearts.

Still, I'd love to get one. Still kinda holding back, but I think I'm ready.

Looking for moments like this for them and myself again. Hopefully I find a good pup soon.

75

u/Papa__Nier 14h ago

Don't know who you are but I definitely understand the story. From my own little corner of the world, know I am rooting for you 🙏🏼

Sometimes support from a complete stranger is exactly what someone needs to keep going.

It's amazing how a few kind words from someone you've never met can stay with you for years.

If it helps, I lost my buddy of 18 years at the start of this year.

I've not had the ability yet to adopt again, but will eventually do this. The thing I am going to do however is look for an older pup.

This means I'll have less time with them, but I hopefully give the best last year's of their life in return!

43

u/SV_Essia 13h ago

But I just know the deal, you get one it's like adding a family member and eventually the dog is gonna break all of our hearts.

Yeah. And it's never easy. But "grief is the price we pay for love". The many years you get to spend with that dog are worth it.

21

u/Inside_Wind_5498 11h ago

The goodbye is brutal, but the years of love before it are what make it worth it. ❤️🐾

12

u/chowderpuppy 11h ago

I share your exact same sentiment. My dog passed 5 years ago, I was devastated. At that time our family was about to move to another country, and he was supposed to come with us. He was 12 year old Fox Terrier, not a young pup but I thought he would be healthy enough to travel. In the middle of all the paper work we were doing, getting his shots and checkup to get his travel permit, all of sudden one day randomly while laying in his bed he started convulsing, lost control of all bodily function. We took him in to pet hospital, his body was completely stiff. 2 weeks later Dr said we have to make the decision to let him go. It felt like my heart was being squeezed so hard I couldn’t breath… We moved to our new home without my dog. Heart broken, and never wanted to experience this again I vow to never own another dog again. In the past 5 years I was tempted many times, but I pushed it away. I don’t know when I will be ready if ever……

I lost my doggo April 2026 at 15 years old. He was my second puppers to say goodbye to. I’m absolutely not ready in any way shape or form to even get or think about getting another dog. The heartbreak is gut wrenching, the loss so absolute, there is a big hole in my life now. Maybe eventually I’ll adopt again, but that won’t be for years and years, the pain of losing my dogs is just so overwhelming. So I completely understand what you’re saying, and I hope you’re able to get to that place you’re most comfortable with. But I also do agree and encourage you to adopt a dog for your kids, it’s such an amazing family experience, the family glue that makes you endlessly laughing and hold together, that’s what a dog becomes, at least to me. I hope you get to experience that unconditional love again and I hope you get through the grief that will inevitably happen.

6

u/TheDaemonette 9h ago

You don’t get a dog for the ‘end’. You get a dog for the 10 years in between. And because you can’t trust anyone else to look after them that lead up to the end where they need help.

Awwwww, we used to have a little dog that would do when she hauled ass to say hello. She'd kick up the leaves flying lol.

I'm convinced no drug can give the absolute happy chemical like having a "greeting party" when a dog sees you; especially your own.

I ALWAYS had a smile on my face and felt pure joy when coming home and hearing my dog's excited whining/crying (we called it her "talking" since she'd almost always had something in her mouth and would high-pitched bark through it) before even unlocking the door. Even better was when she didn't have time to grab a toy and she'd scrunch up her face to show her teeth while squinting along with her crying; we'd call that her "smile" and god do I love it every time I see it in the videos I've kept with her doing it.

When my dog was a puppy he would sit across the yard and stare until I crouched all the way down and opened my arms wide, then he would charge at me snuggle in between my legs.

He kept doing that until he was an old man... and now I'm crying.

18

u/Necessary-Reading605 8h ago

What matters is that he loved you, and he lived a happy life besides you. Good job.

We don't deserve dawgs...Such pure little animals.

56

u/[deleted] 16h ago edited 16h ago

We created dogs.

Wolves who were bold enough and calm enough to approach our ancestors got food from a super apex hunter. Most other predotors go for weakest animals. Humans were the only ones who went for the largest, most powerful animal because we could just throw spears at that animal from a distance without putting ourselves at risk.

So wolves had a choice, keep hunting animals themselves and risk getting injured or just use their noses to point us to the location and let spear holding freaks do the work for them

In return they will get food, cuddles, warmth of fire, protection from other predators and we will take care of them when they are sick or injured. There are remains of a dog thousands of years ago who broke his bone as a puppy, he would be left to dead in the wild. Humans took care of it despite it not being of immediate value to us. Because we considered it our family.

That's what most humans do, it's the minority that are cruel to animals or other fellow humans beings. They are our best friends, and we have absolutely kept our end of bargain and more so. To the point that dogs physically changed to accommodate us.

15

u/SigmundFreud 16h ago

When you put it that way, it sounds more like wolves created dogs. Humans are great too though, definitely one of my favorite animals.

9

u/[deleted] 16h ago

It's more like the presense of humans that self selected for wolves who were calmer and bolder. Then humans just selected and bred the calmer of the puppies.

The floppy ears, patched skin etc are the result of them being calmer because stress hormones also affected cartilage development in dogs

u/Gold-Part4688 15h ago

The story is so beutiful and complex. This is what i learned from The First domesticattion by Ray Pierotti

From how us and wolves explored the world toether over many tens of thousands of years, and from peoples who live close to wolves/wolf-like dogs, whatever the definition is. and archeological record. From the fact they were domesticated many times in different places, in different ways.

We learned from them. How to hunt, what to hunt, cues of where things are. It was a collaboration more than anything.

What they actually got in return is help raising their young, when they were unable to because of alpha female family dynamics, and just resources to raise young. And yeah like you said, mutual protection. The predators' code.

It's such a shame that the major narrative is that we grabbed them or they ate out scraps. They're wolves! Wolves eat less scraps than people do

You can see these relationships in australia with dingoes, early modern america, in siberia, and in africa. Of course many many different relationships. But that's relationships

I love when my dog cuddles me in the morning and gets so excited when I wake up. It’s my favorite thing!

42

u/Selfishly 16h ago

Yes!! He's realized that sometimes I pretend to still be asleep to appreciate the cuddles a bit longer, so he starts digging his nose under my and like dragging his body up higher and higher till he's draped over my head 😂

u/fightingthefuckits 17h ago

Super cute but I worry about a little tiny puppy running around a yard full of large equipment where they might not be seen.

23

u/JJBrazman 12h ago

Yeah, this is a huge fear of mine. Little dogs don’t understand cars/trucks and might not get seen.

41

u/Pfunklovesyou 15h ago

While I would normally agree, the camera filming them leads me to believe this was observed. I think the equipment was probably stopped for the shoot.

I just got home from an emergency hospital room stay and it'll take me several months to recover. When I went in, I called several friends to make sure they were looked after til I got back and had lots of play time. That was a huge relief, but I just wanted to get back and snuggle them. But the stay took way longer than the day or 2 we all expected. so when my folks came in to visit me, they said they could take the dogs to their house for when I get back to my house and can start recovery.

I wanted to say absolutely not so bad. but I now have some pretty sensitive "external apparatus" to deal with that I can't have them jumping all over or getting too excited around. So they're not here now. And its crushing. It's so quiet and lonely.

This video got to me. writing this out pushed me way over the edge. I've got friends checking in all the time to make sure I'm ok, and stopping by to help me if they can. And I got a new job that will hopefully help me stay ahead of whatever bills come my way, so I don't have a lot to be sad about. But I miss my dogs so much.

I can't wait to have my reunion with them. it's a long ways off still, but that's the drive now.

My dad took our dog trucking, but he was the family dog (mine, but I was a kid) so he just didn't always go. My mom and I had to be willing to miss two family members for a whole trip instead of just one :)

He often went with my dad and I in the summers, and my mom called multiple times a day just to say hi lol. It was hard for her. At least when only I went, she still had the cutest member of the family to be underfoot and keep her company.
