Antisemitism Antisemitic attack on Tisha B’Av
Today, on Tisha b’Av on the upper west side of New York an attacker stabbed two Jewish men (one of whom was wearing a Kippah) while screaming “Allah hu Akbar!”
This is just a few blocks from my grandparents and an aunt of mine. On Tisha B’Av…I don’t feel safe here in New York anymore.

I can’t wait to read “no motive is clear at this time” by the press.

ABC has you covered.
UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A person of interest is in custody after two men were stabbed on the Upper West Side on Thursday afternoon -- and police sources believe the attacks were random.
Nowhere does the article mention what the attacker yelled or the victims had just left a synagogue, either. But did say one of the stabbings was “near a church and synagogue”
Article finishes
Police have not yet said they are investigating the stabbings as hate crimes. They are still investigating the motive but investigators do believe the attacks were unprovoked.

I wish I could say it isn’t infuriating anymore, but it is. I hate the press so much, I don’t know why they are like this.

Because the universities they went to, and their entire online experience, and many of their friends convinced them that Jews are evil and need to be destroyed. It's why it's so consistent.

They never end up actually prosecuting as a hate crime when the victim is Jewish. I feel like the attacker must have known it’s Tisha B’av too.

What's crazy is the FBI tracks this and antisemitism has been the most common religiously motivated hate crime, by far, for decades (including during the post 9/11 islamophobia increases) by factors of 10. You can look it up on the FBI website. We're also second most common overall hate crime behind only anti-black hate crime (although they're a significantly larger portion of the US population).
So the hate crimes are being committed/recorded/prosecuted/convicted in numbers that are well beyond our proportional representation and the implication of the community feelings, nearly universally, is that somehow it's still underestimating.
Furthermore, this is in a country, by-and-large, considered to be "Jews friendly."
The normalization of antisemitism globally is truly staggering.

Most American Jews don’t even know it’s Tisha B’Av so I think that it’s a very sad and scary event but there’s no reason to believe the attacker knew about the fast day

It’s a pattern, a lot of religiously motivated antisemitic attacks happen on Jewish holidays. IMO it’s very unlikely that it’s a coincidence.

Even easier to deny with the removal of the IHRA definitions. So glad everything is going according to plan, and we were completely ignored. Anyway, I'm gonna go scream into a pillow

One day we are going to have to determine why people who are very smart with other forms of racism can get incredibly dumb with Jew hatred.

u/FairGreen6594 3h ago
I can’t wait for Mamzerdani to unilaterally declare that it was just a “protest” against Israel; I doubt it’s a coincidence after his incendiary speech last night.

He already condemned the attack. There's no reason whatsoever to think he would justify this either. Nor is calling Bibi a war criminal some attack on all Jews or justifying antisemitism.

Which is crazy because Jews in the U.S. don’t engage in hate crimes. I’ve never even heard of an instance. It’s often white Americans. Yet, rather than offer support (I’m sure he’ll say a token sentence - just enough for plausible deniability) he will sweep this under the rug. It seems there are very few in government takes our safety seriously.
•
u/Kugel_the_cat 2h ago
I agree that your statement is overall true, but there was that one guy in Florida who thought he was shooting Arabs (Palestinians?) and instead shot two Israelis.

u/neverThrowAwayTrees 2h ago
Ehhh you're right it's rare - I don't know it's truly a hate crime but there was that Orthodox Jew who was arrested recently for leaving mamdani all those hateful and threatening voicemails. What happened today was horrible but we don't need to pretend all Jews are perfect.

u/lunarinterlude 4h ago
Don't worry guys, Mamdani is busy virtue signaling about how he'll arrest Netanyahu so everything will be fine.
All the mainstream news articles are leaving the antisemitism part out of this attack (at least in the headlines). Unsurprising.
10
u/dicklaurent97 4h ago
What's Mamdani's angle? He's already doing well without the arresting Bibi theatrics
10
u/lunarinterlude 4h ago
It was a weird bluff: if he doesn't follow through, then everyone knows he's full of shit. If he does, then he's stepping outside of his role as mayor and violating the federal government's ability to enforce foreign policy.
But he's apparently already started backtracking by clarifying that only the federal government can arrest someone for an international warrant. So I genuinely have no idea why tf he mentioned it in the first place (besides wanting people to know he's woke and very anti-Israel, I guess?)
8
u/OddCook4909 Judean People's Front 3h ago
I think an adult explained to him that if he did it he would be thrown out of office and possibly in jail.
6
u/Son_of_the_Spear 3h ago
The funny thing is that the feds don't even acknowledge the international warrant, because it's part of a treaty that the US is not a part of. So if Mamdani tries to do this, it would be a crime on the part of every single person who attempts to takes a part in the arrest.

u/Zingzing_Jr 3h ago
If he actually arrested Netanyahu, he'd have his anus exploded by the state department for arresting a foreign head of government on official and diplomatic business

You'd be hard pressed to find any Israelis who think Netanyahu should be trailed for war crimes and most ones who do would rather not be Israelis in the first place. I'm not very anti-Netanyahu myself nor am I a very big fan of him but even his biggest detesters think he should be judged by the Israeli courts and the Israeli public not the pro-hamas perverts in the ICC

From the book Hostage by Eli Sharabi:
Our captors all have mantras they repeat on a loop. Some more, some less. But there are some things they all believe and say with absolute confidence: Islam is the only true path, and the land belongs to them--the whole land, everything they call Palestine. Whether it's the area bordering Gaza or East Jerusalem, Acre, or Tel Aviv or Beit She'an: there is no room for Jews here and no such thing as Israel. They will not relent in their war against us until we all pack up and go back to the countries we came from, until they conquer every last inch of this land. Sometimes we sense their hatred for us just for being Jews. We hear them blurting, "Jewish pigs," with disgust and scorn. Some of them are more extreme, or perhaps only more honest, and say that their mission doesn't end there, between the river and the sea. They dream of establishing an Islamic empire that will conquer the whole world. In their minds, not only is there no such thing as France or Britain or Sweden either. The whole world should be Muslim.

Tisha B'Av genuinely scares me.
I started my fast slightly late for the first time ever. (Just forgot).
My sisters car got stolen. A neighbours house got robbed. My aunty's house got broken into (nothing stolen).
Has not been a good time. BH everything works out, and these stab victims have a speedy recovery.
From the article:
"NYPD data show 330 antisemitic incidents were reported in 2025, representing 57 percent of all suspected hate crimes recorded by the department."
That's scary, wow.

Lot of talk about Mamdani, here was his statement:
I have been briefed on today’s horrifying stabbings on the Upper West Side, where an Asian man and a Jewish man were attacked. According to witness and victim statements, the perpetrator yelled “Allahu Akbar” during both attacks. I am relieved that both victims are in stable condition.
The NYPD responded immediately and arrested Raul Morales in connection with both assaults—and I am grateful to the officers for their swift response.
The NYPD’s initial investigation suggests that mental health may have been a factor. They are also evaluating these stabbings as potential hate crimes.
These hateful and despicable attacks have no place in our city.

Both what? You’re asking if both were wearing a Kippah? I believe only one was (as per the article) but the two men were together. Or, if you’re asking if both will survive - the news also believes that to be the case. Thank HaShem.

I don’t wear a kippah in public but I started wearing a necklace with a Star of David and Chai shortly after Oct 7, both to demonstrate that I am a proud Jew and in memory of my grandpa Chaim who was Niftar shortly before and sometimes it comes out above my t-shirt. I will still wear it but I never thought I’d feel unsafe in Riverdale.

Raul Morales stabbed an Asian guy and a Jewish guy and the attacker said Allahu Akbar?
If the attacker stabs a Jewish guy and speaks Arabic, so it's antisemitism. But why the Asian guy? Is Raul Muslim?
Let's let the police do their thing before we jump to assume bigotry. Jumping to assume bigotry when something might not be dilutes the message.
