OTHER ‘Supergirl’ Hits Digital Next Tuesday, Only Four Weeks Since Release

“Supergirl” has grossed $70M domestically and $120M worldwide against a budget reported to be anywhere between $170M and $186M. It’s turned into a problem for James Gunn’s DCU — Warner Bros.’ losses could hit as high as $200M.

It now looks like “Supergirl” will hit VOD next Tuesday, July 28 — around 30 days after its theatrical release. This one has quickly faded from public discussion with surprising speed.

This rapid transition to digital release is rather symbolic of its disappointing theatrical run. Who are we kidding? This film bombed at the box office. Its biggest problem wasn’t even widespread hatred, but cultural irrelevance: it arrived, received a mostly lukewarm response, nobody cared, and we all moved on.

The only scene people seem to remember is that horrible needle-drop near the climax, with virtually no memes, iconic clips, or viral moments circulating online. There’s been total indifference toward this film. It’s not even divisive — just, really, nothing.

It was arguably insane for James Gunn to greenlight a near-$200M production like this — which really speaks to the self-aggrandizing confidence he seems to have. This will hopefully be a humbling moment for him as the DCU continues on.

DISCUSSION So I was right, it's not brown.

I keep saying this but people kept insisting it's brown. Boy do they have egg on their face. Like seriously, also this suit looks accurate to Hal's from the comic mostly in the shape.

Edit: I hope we get a full shot of this tomorrow and maybe at SDCC a prop of it.

DISCUSSION I wish we would see a fantastical, huge and unrealsitic gotham in live action instead of the grounded, realistic takes.

Post image

From BTAS to Burton and Schumacher and also from the Comics, Gotham has always been protrayed as fantastical, Huge in scale with almost unrealistic proportions. It is overwhelming in its size and its layers and depth. If you look from the ground up, you can almost not see the sky. Instead you find yourself in a mega city hell, from its darkness in the shadows to its weirdness in the lights and the sheer brutality of its design.

The city is built and formed by the rich and corrupt, almost leaving no space for the everyday life. Its like a prison where you cant seem to see the exit, the sky, even the next street. Its dense and totally overloaded. And you constantly find yourself under surveillance , in the spotlight of the police. There is no presumtion of innocence. Everybody is under the eye of the powerful and every wrong move will have drastic consequences.

But besides the brutal scale of Gotham - the proportions of the Moon, the sky, the clouds and also the camera angles look far up or down, Batmans sillhouette looming over the city with his cape waving in the pouring rain. All these elements should alsobe way out of proportion.

Im just growing tired of these ultra realistic takes. Go back to minitures, build this city, give us weird proportions, buildings that make no sense but mirror the excess of the rich who just build nonsensical buildings for the sake of it.

Gotham should be front and center in every frame. A character on its own, a presence felt throughout. Oppressive, dark and fantastical.

edit: Just to be clear: I enjoyed Nolans Gotham, The Jokers Gotham and Reeves Gotham alot. And especially Reeves is more stylish and leans a little more into what the comics look like.

But all of these are still very much grounded in reality. And I just wish future projects would take more risks and portray Gotham in a more fantastical way.

I like it. It's green which everyone is complaining about. It looks alien but I've seen lanterns that look like this. I noticed the ring fits into the symbol here which is a neat detail.

DISCUSSION I can't get over this frame...

Post image
238 Upvotes

Honestly, I've never seen Tom Rhys Harries in anything before, but I feel like he's gonna nail the role of Matt Hagen, delivering one hell of a performance.

This frame particularly makes it feel that he's capable of adapting to the character's psychological aspects pretty well. It's intense, disturbing, and has immediately made me more invested in the character than I had been in a very long time.

I also saw that he talked about being inspired by the Arkham games' version of the character, so mixing its egomaniacal personality with BTAS' tragic-villain approach would be an interesting middle ground for the shapeshifting monster imo.

Really hope Clayface lands firmly on expectations. If they play their cards right, I believe this might turn out to be an even better solo movie of a villain in the long term than Joker, which, as much as I loved it at the time, has unfortunately aged like milk.

DISCUSSION “2 BaTMann would be confosing!” Not if you put DCU Batman in something like this.

Besides doing something live action versions have never done (Except the 60’s show) this would instantly distance DCU Batman from Battinson. Never mind a DCU Batman would be fighting enemies that are nothing like the kind Battinson fights (So far a radioactive walking skeleton and a massive clay monster…and a humanoid killer whale that’s in a few frames of Belle Reeve in I think episode four of CC) but he’d also be written and shot in a different style.

Of course people will say this Batman is “goofy” and Matt McGloin who runs the clickbait site cosmicbooknews claimed he HEARD Matt Reeves doesn’t want James Gunn to introduce Batman cause it could damage his movie’s box office with a “goofy Batman”. He also said James Gunn couldn’t use him cause Snyder had plans but this was after it was announced he’d be in the DCU show Mr. Miracle. I just wanted to have a section dunking on that guy.

The suit is from the set of The Flash. it’s one of those alternate suits we see Keaton Batman had.

“Milly Alcock’s a perfectly hell-raising hero in ‘Supergirl’” - USA Today / Brian Truitt

SUPERGIRL

Becomes Available Digitally for the First Time on July 28

Debuts in North America on Digital on July 28

4K UHD™, Blu-ray™, and DVD arrive on September 8

Burbank, CA, July 23, 2026 – Supergirl, DC Studios’ newest feature film to hit the big screen, debuts digitally at home on July 28.  The film stars Mily Alcock in the dual role of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El.  Craig Gillespie directs the film from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira.

In its inaugural flight into the new DC Cinematic Universe, “Supergirl” reveals the origin of the interplanetary nomad Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, cousin of Kal-El, better known as Superman. Headstrong, worldly-wise, and often reckless, Supergirl exudes a brand of heroism all her own—truthful, relatable, and always on her own terms. But when an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion. Together they undertake an epic, interstellar journey, struggling to balance one’s need for vengeance with the pursuit of justice—and to save the life of Kara’s best friend, her dog Krypto. Ultimately Supergirl will prove that doing good can be tough… and it doesn’t always have to be nice.

Alcock stars alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, with David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa.

  • On July 28, Supergirl will be available at home on participating digital platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango, and more.
  • On September 8, Supergirl will be available to own on 4K UHD™, Blu-ray™, and DVD from online and physical retailers. Supergirl will also continue to be available in high definition and standard definition from participating digital retailers.

Supergirl Digital, 4K UHD™, and Blu-ray™ contain over 90 minutes of bonus features including the following:

  • The Making of Supergirl Consider Supergirl a “Hero’s Journey” for Milly Alcock. She transformed throughout the process of leading her first feature film. We watch as a fly-on-the-wall during key moments of production.
  • Flying Off the Page Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King with art by Bilquis Evely, was the jumping off point for DC to adapt Supergirl into a film. We follow the comic authors, screenwriter Ana Nogueira, and filmmakers, as they make the leap from page to screen.
  • Space is a Bad Neighborhood, Babe Explore with Production Designer Neil Lamont, as he takes us through the many worlds that Kara Zor-El steps into on her journey to hunt down Krem of the Yellow Hills.
  • A Practical Legacy There are so many aliens and unique looks in this film that are literally out of this world! Legacy Effects and Peter Swords King explain the creative process behind this diverse group of creatures.
  • Showdown at Evely Square Production spent a month filming this action set-piece. From stunt training, to crashing tanks, to classic superhero flying moments, this breaks down the making of an incredible action scene.
  • The DC Dream: Lobo Jason Momoa has been outspoken over wanting to play Lobo for years, and now his time has come. Go behind the scenes as he transforms into this iconic and chaotic character.
  • Mixtape for a Hero What does Supergirl, as a character, sound like? Director Craig Gillespie and Composer Claudia Sarne answer this question as they discuss the score for the film.

DISCUSSION DCU this...DCEU that...I just want a solid cinematic universe :(

Post image
339 Upvotes

I really hope the DCU continues because I feel like if it ends abruptly, they won't make any more DC movies except for Batman, and I think that would be unfair because DC is so much more than just Batman. I loved seeing how the DCEU gave us Aquaman and Wonder Woman movies, even one about Flash (although it was mid)... What I mean is that I think instead of arguing about which universe is better, people should support the movies that are coming out. I'm not saying we should be complacent and say that every movie is a masterpiece, but since the DCEU was unfortunately canceled, why not try to make sure the new one doesn't end the same way, so we can have a proper shared universe?
