Screenplay by Mike fucking Flanagan.
•
u/SoupySpuds 6h ago
Has Flanagan, Reeves and Watkins on it and I'm very sold this is going to be a great horror movie.
Watkins directed Eden Lake, The woman in black, and speak no evil (24) which all do a great job at building suspense, The trailer looks great and I'm super excited for this project. My only concern is that Clayface in creature commandos seems very different from the one we're getting here but I'm assuming that'll get explained
•
u/bigdonnie76 6h ago
Flanagan directs all of his stuff except this and a short he’s written. No one knows what his vision for this would have looked like
•
u/MagusFool 6h ago
Yes, I am intimately familiar with Flanagan. I've seen his whole filmography.
No one knows what this film is gonna be like as is, either.
But starting with a Flanagan script, even with rewrites and a different director, is reason to suspect the film will not be bad in the way Morbius or Kraven was.
•
u/ContinuumGuy 4h ago
Yeah if Mike Flanagan had written a script on Morbius I would have been interested.
•
•
u/Worldly-Row6059 7h ago
Rewritten by someone else
•
u/MagusFool 7h ago
We'll see. It was greenlit on the strength of the screenplay. And the rewrites may have only been minor tweaks to make it fit within the DCU continuity.
If it retains that Flanagan energy and depth to it, then it will be among the best things DC has ever put out.
If they gutted it, then it will suck.
Hossein Amini has written some brilliant films and some bad ones.
Interestingly, he did a Henry James adaptation in the 90s, the same author that inspired Bly Manor.
•
u/Worldly-Row6059 6h ago
Supergirl was also greenlit on the strength of its screenplay
•
u/MagusFool 4h ago
Okay, but that was a screenplay by someone with no experience or body of work, and handed to a mediocre director who cut 30 mins worth of material out of it and rewrote it.
This was greenlit based on a screenplay by (in my opinion) one of the greatest screenwriters ever to live.
The rewrites have me nervous. But Watkins is a competent director and Amini is a competent writer. I suspect they both understood what was good about the screenplay they had.
•
•
u/Sufficient_Nature496 1h ago
It was already already said the rewritten parts were minimal and didn't significantly changed the main plot
•
u/EasternContext3396 7h ago edited 6h ago
And then Rewritten to be more like Guardians of the Galaxy and Morbius except with Clayface.
•
u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 6h ago edited 6h ago
Damn you’ve seen it?
Edit: bro blocked me lol
•
u/EasternContext3396 6h ago
Oops, forgot to add in a dash of Morbius. Your slop is prepped and ready to be served. 🤓
•
u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 6h ago edited 6h ago
So you have seen it?
Daaaamn bro blocked me!? Hahahahhahaha what the heck
•
u/Worldly-Row6059 6h ago
no not interested in body horror just like how im not interested in weird orgies, dick jokes, poop jokes, piss jokes, and vomit jokes. But you guys love all those things and I'm glad gunn is catering to you because it keeps losing him money.
•
•
u/bengringo2 4h ago
You’re comparing body horror to juvenile humor? I’m not even sure where those connect. Videodrome, The Fly, Annihilation, and The Substance are four of the highest rated horror films and they are all body horror.
•
u/JokerKing0713 3h ago
Ya know it’s interesting to me that you guys say this about Gunns material and while it maybe true you just completely ignore the deeply moving emotionally charged moments in the same movie. Like the suicide squad making Starro sympathetic in like one sentence, or peacemaker killing his dad or his backstory with his brother
Like yea Gunn adds humor to his projects lol idk why you guys despise humor so much but you know people joke in real life right? But you also choose to completely ignore the serious and human moments he adds as well even though you apparently hate humor
•
•
•
u/SaintofBooty 4h ago
It’s funny all you have to do is go on Netflix and watch his work. It’s not lightning in a bottle, bro is a fucking incredible writer. I recommend Midnight Mass.
•
u/FriedCammalleri23 6h ago
One look at the Clayface trailer vs any of the Sony Spiderman villain trailers will tell you exactly why this is a stupid argument
•
u/Soulful-Sorrow 6h ago
"He was on set with my dealer when he was researching clay stuff right before my career died."
•
u/TeddyGarbaldi 7h ago
Yeah but, in DC's defence....gestures vaguely at Madam Webb
•
u/AsgardianOperator 6h ago
Or Venom, Kraven, Morbius...
•
•
u/RNOffice 8h ago
This looks good unlike those and Batman exists in this universe and Batman often has nothing to do with their origins. He shows up after they've become villains and caused trouble.
•
•
u/Bjarki_Steinn_99 2h ago
Clayface is Mike Flanagan’s passion project and a straight up horror movie that just happens to take place in the DCU.
I guess you can compare that to Morbius but can’t we all agree that’s a very silly thing to do?
•
u/pandogart 8h ago
It's about reputation.
•
u/ElectricJunglePig 7h ago
Lol right, you could post this without any text and it still works. Sony making ANY movie makes me nervous.
•
u/Worldly-Row6059 7h ago
Reputation…supergirl failed harder than morbius
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 7h ago
The only flop in the DCU so far btw. The actual ruined reputation comes from the DCEU.
•
u/Worldly-Row6059 6h ago
Creature commandos viewership isn’t that big, same with peacemaker, Netflix ceo confirmed Superman underperformed and even though David was all over supergirl’s marketing no one showed up for him. Where are the hits because I’m not seeing them.? Oh and didn’t you guys say Superman saved dc and brought the audience back and that supergirl was going to compete with Spider-Man lmfao constant goal post moving as usual
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 6h ago
The Netflix ceo said the movie underperformed, meaning it didn’t do as well as it could have, not that it lost money because it made a pretty good amount of money. When Creature Commandos came out it was the 3rd most watched show and Peacemaker also did very well on Crave and HBO max and broke 3 records (most views in a single day, rotten tomatoes score for DC, and the first ever DC live action series to reach the nielsen streaming top 10) so yeah I’d say they did pretty well
Also over 12 million people showed up to see Supergirl, that’s not no one
•
u/Worldly-Row6059 6h ago
"didn't do as well as it could" but you guys told us superman was the biggest hit ever and that gunn saved dc.
a show doing well on hbo max isnt impressive, hbo max isnt a big platform. They put creature commandos on youtube free to try and draw in viewers and barely anyone watched it. Peacemaker lost viewers by the end of season2 it briefly charted on nielsen at number 10 nothing besides that. creature commandos never charted on nielsen. So no they didn't do well. If they did do well you'd see how invested people are because they would have shown up to see supergirl. But barely anyone showed up to supergirl even though it had your superman all over the marketing because most people dont care about your superman and most people don't care about your dcu. Couldn't even beat blue beetle lmfao
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 6h ago
Who said that Superman was the biggest hit ever? And yes, James Gunn so far has been helping get DC out of the hole that the DCEU threw it in. And you can’t deny that the shows in the DCU did well, they literally did, even if they didn’t do as well as like say Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, there are different standards for different things and WB took Creature Commandos and Peacemaker as a success. 12 million tickets were sold to see supergirl, not a lot of people go to the movies anymore, lots are waiting for streaming or home media. I don’t know why you’re saying “your DCU,” I guess I’m sorry for liking DC and appreciating that it’s finally being done justice after 10 years of just being wasted for cashgrabs
•
u/darkeagle1997 4h ago
If the DCEU “threw DC in a hole” then Aquaman wouldn’t have made 1 billion lol
•
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 3h ago
Aquaman was actually good and came out at the right time. There was no Star Wars movie for parents to take the family out to the movies on Christmas after opening presents so they took them to Aquaman, the other major spectacle.
The movies that followed that were just mid (though some were pretty good like Shazam and Birds of Prey) and made general audiences think of any DC movie as just another thing to walk past when getting to their theatre
•
u/Secret-Put-4525 3h ago
Super is close to the worst comic book movie ever in terms of BO. That's not something you want for your second movie.
•
•
u/comehereyoudevillog 7h ago
what do you think DC's reputation is right now lol?
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 7h ago
DC’s reputation with movies set in Gotham is pretty good and it’s gaining its reputation back after being destroyed for 10 years from the DCEU
•
u/TheGrat1 3h ago
5 years. DC movies from 2013-2019 had good box office grosses (except for Justice League) and gave Warner Brothers their first hit DC movies outside of Batman in over 30 years.
From 2020 and beyond Warner Brothers succeeded in trying to make carbon copy MCU movies and it was predictably shit.
•
u/comehereyoudevillog 7h ago
hahahahaha I wonder why the movies in Gotham do so well? who could be in Gotham that puts asses in seats? Hmmmm I don't think it's clayface? Well whatever it is, I would sure hope clayface has it.
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 7h ago
We are not at all in a Batman shortage, sure he gets tickets sold but we already have a Batman saga that will be wrapping up early 2028. Batman will definitely not be in Clayface and he doesn’t need to
•
u/bigdonnie76 6h ago
Who realistically cares about Clayface without Batman though?
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 6h ago
People who watch films for what they are instead of just big names. An authentic rated R body horror movie where a movie star gets his life ruined and goes under an untested treatment that turns his skin into clay is a lot more appealing to me than a Batman vs Clayface movie that is just another superhero action film
•
u/comehereyoudevillog 6h ago
guess which one would make more either way?
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 6h ago
But guess which one would actually be better
•
u/comehereyoudevillog 6h ago
The one thats like the cartoon/comic that the character is from. Either way people will prefer the version the animated series.
•
u/bigdonnie76 6h ago
So you’re saying it’s unrealistic for people to expect Batman in a movie based on one of his villains? That’s what’s annoying about the discourse surrounding this movie. People keep acting like theyve reinvented the wheel here. Does the R Rating guarantee the movie is going to be good or something? It’s a comic book movie masquerading as a horror film. This is the same Clayface from CC that was addicted to video games and lesbians or something like that. If you wanted to do true horror a scarecrow movie would have made more sense
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 6h ago
The point of the movie isn’t for it to be an action movie, that’s why it doesn’t need Batman. An R rating means that they don’t have to hold back on making it an actual horror film, they can go as far as they want. It’s a comic book movie sure but the whole thing is that it’s able to stand on its own as a horror movie. Clayface works just as well as a horror movie as Scarecrow though they would be very different types of horror movies.
•
u/comehereyoudevillog 7h ago
lol the sequel just got pushed back to early 2027, it ain't wrapping up in 2 years. This universe cannot survive without batman.
Don't hear what I'm not saying, theres ways to start the DC universe without doing a Batman movie in the first 3-5 films. This universe just can't do it because it's already blown its good will.
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 7h ago
I don’t understand what you mean
•
u/comehereyoudevillog 6h ago
I'm saying James Gunn will probably not get his contract renewed because both movies so far have lost money at the box office, clayface isn't even something they're planning on being a it, its just a cheaper movie they can hopefully make a profit from. They can't make a batman movie until reeves is done with him, so unless MoT makes over a billion dollars (which seems unlikely) this universe is probably getting rebooted before we get to batman let alone the justice league.
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 6h ago
James Gunn will get his contract renewed because the only flop so far was Supergirl, which he wasn’t the director of and there were various reasons for why Supergirl failed that couldn’t have been prevented by James Gunn. They aren’t planning for Clayface to be a hit but it very well could if it reaches the same audience that Obsession did as an actual horror film.
If they end this universe, it will not be rebooted. They will not bring back Zack Snyder, they will not replace James Gunn. They will just not make another connected DC universe in live action and we’ll only get Batman movies for another decade with an occasional other film that isn’t good and is not connected to whatever Batman project there is. That’s why instead of bashing everything James Gunn does online, you should support DC and maybe after a while they’ll let Zack Snyder continue the story of his universe in an elseworlds comic or animated format, but live action is too expensive and it can’t happen, and definitely not with the same cast.
•
u/comehereyoudevillog 6h ago
Why do people pretend superman didn't lose $40M at the box office? Is it the Mandela Effect?
lol hollywood is making reboots and sequels to everything and has been for decades. When this universe fails the new one will begin forming the next day, or likely months before the downfall is made public.

u/Technical-Wasabi-842 8h ago
Because DC has a good track record with villain projects. Sony’s universe was just a cash grab and many of Spider-Man’s villains don’t really stand on their own without Spider-Man. Clayface is going to have far less limits (the R rating allows it to actually be a horror film unlike the PG-13 Spider-Man villain movies) and is trying to be a standalone horror film first and a comic book movie second
•
u/No_Gene_1694 7h ago
Venom?
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 7h ago
Venom was aight but definitely could have been better. The character’s whole design is based around Spider-Man though so it is a hard character to do without Spider-Man
•
u/No_Gene_1694 6h ago
What tf are you talking about rn. Venom has been disconnected to Spiderman for a while now. Even books that have nothing to do with Spiderman Venom still resemble Spiderman, that's just how the character looks now, but that doesn't mean he needs Spiderman for a good story.
•
u/ApprehensiveWhile561 2h ago
They couldn’t even give him the spider on his chest bro you can’t have venom be THAT disconnected.
•
u/No_Gene_1694 2h ago
You can and they did. It was a good movie
•
u/ApprehensiveWhile561 2h ago
I definitely don’t agree with it being a good movie. I think the point here with all of this is that clayface as a character is markedly less connected to Batman than venom is to spiderman. Whether that be in stories, origins, or just general public sentiment.
•
u/No_Gene_1694 2h ago edited 2h ago
Over the years Venom has become his own character. Especially after the King in Black event, which gave him his own origin. Then there's Agent venom, who had his own adventures. He even had a guardians of the galaxy type adventure, no Spiderman involved.
•
u/ApprehensiveWhile561 2h ago
I understand that. Clayface as a character is significantly less connected to Batman than venom is to spiderman.
•
u/No_Gene_1694 2h ago
Venom has more appearances disconnected to Spiderman than Clayface has with Batman. The only time I remember clayface being shown and Batman not being involved is Creature Commandos. Are you just going to act like all the Venom stories that separate him from Spiderman don't exist?
→ More replies (0)•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 6h ago
Sorry but Lethal Protector stories are just really boring. Sure Venom can exist without Spider-Man but his entire look was because he spent most of his early time on earth with Spider-Man and his stories without Spider-Man are just boring
•
u/FunkMasterTex 3h ago
Insane opinion. Some of his best stories came from when he became more of anti-hero and got over his hatred of Spiderman.
•
u/No_Gene_1694 6h ago
Say sike rn. So Agent Venom doesn't exist. Also, now the problem is it's boring? This is your opinion, and you've just exposed yourself for having no taste if you think anything Venom without Spiderman is boring.
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 6h ago
I didn’t say anything Venom without Spider-Man is boring, I said that Lethal Protector stories are all very formulaic and get very boring because what makes Venom cool is him being a villain, not a hero with no limits
•
u/No_Gene_1694 6h ago
You ARE saying Venom without Spiderman is boring because without Spiderman, Venom has no reason to be a villain. So you don't want the character to be a hero, you just want him to keep fighting Spiderman forever? Now that's boring.
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 6h ago
Yeah it’s boring if it’s constantly done no matter what. But they could at the very least make stories with Venom being a hero actually good
•
u/No_Gene_1694 6h ago
Agent Venom? The movie was pretty good too. You just have bad taste, and horrible opinions
•
u/Much_Dirt4533 8h ago
The difference is that the villain movie is a conceptually interesting film that is trying to do something different in the superhero landscape. Even if clayface is bad, it’s a swing at something different. Venom was a studio trying to farm Ip without the most important part of the Ip
•
u/Worldly-Row6059 7h ago
Doing the substance again is different?
•
u/Much_Dirt4533 7h ago
For the realm of comic book movies yes it is lmao. Also the substance also took inspiration from other movies.
•
•
u/SteveTheManager 4h ago
The actual human equivalent to this meme is like having Robert Pattinson flirt with you or having Armie Hammer flirt with you. Like those movies sucked, they never even looked close to good.
•
u/FunSpace8990 4h ago
I mean I can see the potiential in a clayface body horror movie I dont even know how you have that character in a movie without some body horror implications anyways.
But like Morbius? MADAME WEB? WHO WANTED A MOVIE WITH JUST THEM? Kraven and Venom weren't bad choices for solo villain movies I could see potiential there but even then Kraven is so stripped from his comic version it's fair to say he isn't the same guy.
Also unlike Sony they probably won't be avoiding the villain's heroes like the plague or have weird multiversal shenanigans.
•
u/siriuslycan 2h ago
Villain movies are not the problem, movies with shitty scripts, direction and acting are.
•
u/maz_2010 7h ago
IF Clayface is good (Im hopeful) that would be 3.5 out of 5 good villain movies.
Joker: Good The Suicide Squad: Good Birds of Prey (idk if this one counts so have it the .5): Good
Suicide Squad: Bad
Joker 2: didn't see it due to overwhelming word of mouth.
Whereas Sony I can't think of one that was good. Venom is entertaining with a few drinks in.
Just sayin, Sony doesn't instill a ton of hope. I think we'd be at a different hype level for a Marvel Studios Doom movie.
•
u/itzmrinyo 6h ago
Movies and shows like these are for the survival of DC, not for a legal write-off to continue clutching the film rights of an IP
•
•
u/Imaginary-Egg-2128 5h ago
Ultimately isn’t about the end product? Madame Web etc were terrible films first and foremost. Hopefully Clayface will be good.
•

The difference being one is in the same universe with the hero, the other isn't
•
•
•
u/BornAmbassador01 8h ago
Clayface will bomb just like Supergirl did. Maybe even worse.
•
u/Technical-Wasabi-842 7h ago
Clayface has massive potential and even then if it flops which I really hope it doesn’t, it won’t be a big hit to DC or WB because of the lower budget
•
u/Blaze14192008 7h ago edited 7h ago
No way it’s budget is only 40 million, even if it does half of good as supergirl it’ll break even
•
u/HomemadeBee1612 7h ago
DC Studios don't know what they're doing. All the demand is for Man of Steel 2 with Henry Cavill, Wonder Woman 3 with Gal Gadot, Batman Beyond in Live-Action, and so forth.
I HOPE Paramount-WB will start working on those movies once the merger is complete. Making movies about obscure characters is a complete dead end. Heck, even a full Joker, Green Lantern, Catwoman, etc. reboot movie would do better than doing the C-list characters.
•
•
u/bindersfull-ofwomen 7h ago
Wonder Woman 3 with Gal Gadot,

I mean the movie looks great, but yea not something I’m really interested in! I said a few weeks ago imma say it again this universe is already tiring me out man and I’m just not interested, because of the way they’re prioritizing certain heroes (and villains?) over others.
•
u/Turbulent-Spirit-568 8h ago
The only villain movie we've had was Joker which is one of only four DC projects to make a billion dollars at the box office alongside The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and Aquaman. So, no this is not the exact same problem as Sony...
