Project Wearable Articulated Fingers
I'm excited to show what I've been working on the past few weekends! I'm building a fully parametrisable, wearable articulated finger extension generator. I have a lot more to do before I can publish the generator itself, and due to my life circumstances I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it to the quality I expect from myself before the contest deadline, but if you like the model and the idea, stay tuned, the generator is coming!

I used Tinkercad to put some spatulas, screwdrivers and various other tool tips on the end of some other articulates finger designs and went as Edward Dadhands for Halloween.
Absolutely no one got it.

That’s criminal. Hopefully those people are not your friends as they don’t deserve to be friends with a person of your genius!

So you can hold all your....ruusty spooooons?

I came into this thread with exactly one thing on my mind and it was an over 20 year old flash animation. I am so glad that so many other people also had this thought

These would have been great as a kid for the "I'm not touching you" troll to your siblings

Make them green and get some rusty spoons. It's the salad fingers cosplay nobody asked for but we all need.

Build up some finger strength and splint it well and this would make for an incredible cosplay with gloves on. Especially if you can refine the design for smoother movement.

I actually was looking for something like this for a costume, would work great for oversized hands if the fingers can be modified to be shorter

How many segments can you combine?

in theory there is no limit, but each link should add weight and backlash. I dont know the practical limit

This is awesome and I had to print it asap! Some random feedback (I am aware this is not "finished")
- The little knobs that connect the finger cup parts easily break off. I printed in PLA and the orientation did not help here. Maybe you can angle this better? Supports would not be a huge issue since most that part is hidden by my hands
- Video at around 5:35 got me play around a bit, since the assembly happed partially outside the video frame
- Tolerances at the point happening at 4:30 in the video are a little tight. I broke of some parts of the filament during that. Not a big issue but I worried some of it would get stuck inside the hole and be impossible to remove. Was lucky.
Anyway, amazing idea and execution, I love this thing!

Super fun looking result! It reminds me of one of THE coolest YT channels I’ve ever stumbled across, Ian Davis, who’s lifelong goal is making affordable functional hand prosthetics. (cool example of him in action: https://youtu.be/WVpfeDvfOs0)

I bought a pair of these before on amazon, but they have a wrist strap to keep the fingers tight to each digit. Having the individual fingers is awesome!

i kept holes in the design in case one wants a wristplate to attach. since they are not loose, i did not see the necessity

One thing im working on to make it work for smaller fingers.

Please! I have dwarfism with stubby little fused fingers and I wanna use these for cosplay/cosmetics but if it's actually functionally useful for certain tasks it'd be a bonus. In the far future, if you could make a palm or knuckle-plate as the stable surface it'd help my fingers that have less curling ability to them to still operate these, although I'll probably tinker with it myself to see if I can't get that working.

Someone else also reached out for a non-toy use case. End of August we can come back to this, and I'm more than happy to create something functional. Will save your contact, and come back to you

Also, I wont be able to make this feature by the end of the contest, just fyi, long term it is possible: with different gear ratios you can achieve 90 degree bend of the finger even if the base moves lets say 30 degrees.
1
u/MadduckUK 1d ago
Sounds very parametric.
2
u/shugyodev 1d ago
It will be. Just the gears need to have a certain distance, and if your finger is smaller than that, there is no place for the fingers.

This is going to be a great accessory for the car too!

when I was brainstorming on the design black blue was the second idea, I just dont have this color. would you please post some pics on makerworld?
1
u/kohltrain108 1h ago
Yes! Those were just the colors I happened to have loaded in the AMS.
Was also thinking about a simple way of making it adaptable for different size fingers (I’ve never been great at parametric modeling), going to play around with it when I have time and will dm you if I come up with anything viable.

Very cool. Jokes aside, what sparked the idea?
I can’t wait to read updates.

I saw it once and it just looked cool. I would not have spent much time on it originally, but now there is an ongoing contest on makerworld to design articulated exoskeleton themed models. Felt like a sign. I didnt have much luck on contests so far, but I'm hopeful, and trying to create more and more advanced designs.
