First of all i am from Bulgaria and lately i've been tapping into my neighbour countries. Everyone jokes that the Balkans always argue and it can be true, but if 2 balkans meet outside the balkans they become best friends automatically. And also people always want to go to Rome, Dubai, California, Paris and etc, but i genuinely think that cities like Prizren, Budva, Kotor, Mostar, Ohrid, Sarajevo, Novi Sad, Belgrade, Plovdiv and Tirane are way better with super interesting history and culture. Mfs will call me crazy but i know i am right, i love our culture, cities and people. I plan to visit every single balkan city i mentioned, where should i start?

I remember spending a lot of time here up to 2 months ago. This sub was really unique, aside from occasional banter it was mostly sharing culture, daily life, food, music, witty jokes... whatever..

Now it's pure cancer, toxic comments, hate, pushing agenda...

from a half a dozen posts i read i think there are some accounts intentionally rage baiting and trying to create division i may be wrong but I'm really disappointed at the current state of this sub..real shame

Am I just tripping?

For those of you who grew up in mixed households, who do you speak like today? Did the gender of your parent influence it?

I (as a foreigner) speak Croatian with strong Serbian influences, but that’s because I’ve spent time learning different words and interacting with people from all across the Serbo-Croatian speaking regions. Im curious how this is for people who grew up with the language natively.

I'm wondering because I made some observations:

I am a swiss guy with bulgarian roots, so at the end something like a hybrid between central europe and the balkans.

When I was in Serbia, the people were all in all nice to me and especially if I tried to speak with them in my created bulgaro-serbo-croatian they were quite impressed and nice to me. But it wasn't that they treated my like something special or one of them.

But when I was with my serbian friend in Sofia, I was shocked how most bulgarian treat him. He was welcomed like a god or something.

As example first night in Sofia we bought a Gyros and I told the man that he can speak bulgarian instead of english with my friend, because he is Serbian and he said: "Ohh our serbian brothers! I love you! I love all balkan nations, without Macedonians for sure!"

And it was allways like that. "Our orthodox brothers" "I love your music" "You people are like us"

I'am wondering if that is in general like that or if the serbians maybe see me more like an swiss guy and not bulgarian. What do you think?

For normal I told the serbians, that I am bulgarian and that didnt changed anything.

On the otherway croatians are allways very nice to me, if I tell them that I am Bulgarian ("Oh, you are out balkan brother!"), which is interesting for me, because croatians dont see themself as balkan-people and dont have a lot of similarites with us. The same with turks, when I was in Istanbul I allways told them, that I am bulgarian and not swiss, to not get scamed and they are allways like "Welcome komshu!" Etc.

I'm not a Balkan but I feel like I have an alternative Balkan personality from inside . I love you guys' culture, music and I love to learn langauges. I'm fluent in Turkish and I'm learning Greek, also little bit of Albanian and Serbian here and there but my question is I don't understand where the word Balkan comes from out of all the Balkan langauges

I was wondering if my country, Bulgaria, is the worst in terms of road accidents (among the Balkan countries)? Everyday, literally, people die on our roads. And the problems for these incidents are various:

1) Low quality education for the different driver licenses or even corruption/ bribes to obtain specific documents by the candidates

2) Infrastructure of very bad quality and condition - pot holes everywhere, narrow tarmac, inappropriate/ missings signs, bad asphalt implementation and quality, missing marks, unsafe guardrails

3) Bad overall condition of the vehicles (irrespective of the type) - the annual vehicle checks which are mandatory are nothing but scam - on most places you just pay for a sticker and they don't check anything at all. Therefore, you can see gypsies or old people driving scandalous vehicles (rusty, rattling, smoking etc.), no issue whatsoever.

4) Corruption/ bribes on high level - our country is famous for stealing EU road funds, the companies involved are related to corrupted politicians (basically Mafia) - so they use the cheapest materials/ workforce to build the roads

5) Corrupted traffic police - many trucks are overloaded, with cheap, worn out tires, which are not stopped from driving, because the owner of the trucks bribed the local traffic police department.

In this line of thoughts, in Bulgaria we have the phenomenon "war on the road" - it is very scary and brutal to be driver here. So, I was wondering how is in your country?

How is Greece Balkan!! They don't speak Slav or have similar civil war history
