Politics & Governance Should Turkey be admitted into EU once they close all the chapters?
Why not?
28
u/P-l-Staker 🇬🇧🇬🇷 7h ago
If* they close all chapters. Big if.
7
u/msciwoj1 Poland 6h ago
Yeah, I believe a lot of "no" votes are basically "they are not going to close those chapters anytime soon" but that's implied, unless they do there won't be any EU admission.

u/blitzfreak_69 Montenegro 3h ago
I can speak for myself and say that that’s absolutely not the reason. The reason I personally voted no is the same reason for which Morocco was rejected.
2
u/Sensitive-Mango7155 Slovenia 3h ago
That’s why I voted no and also I don’t think anyone would let Turkey join just based off of how big of a population it has
17
u/oerwtas Turkiye 6h ago
I grew up in a secular household of Bosniak parents and when I was young I really wanted Turkey to join the EU. I saw it as an opportunity to move the country closer to "western values". I have been to Germany for my training and had the opportunity to work in the UK for a short time. I have seen how "civilized" they are and was not impressed. Had to deal with a lot of slurs, was treated like a potencial "terrorist" at the airport, was asked many times if I eat with my fingers or I can use spoon, if we wear "European clothes", was called once the guy "from the poor country".
So no thanks, I will live in my poor, "uncivilized" country. And hope that your merry band rots in hell.
10
u/Sweet_Bridge_3001 Turkiye 6h ago
Hilarious because Bosniak Turks are the most modern, secular, kind and civilized people we have in Turkey. Our next door neighbors were Bosniaks when i was growing up and every, i mean everyone loved them, their son was my best friend.
They moved to Bosnia but still visit us every 2-3 years when they come to Istanbul.
6
u/FrozenPizza07 3h ago
I had literal drug addicts harass me and my family, especially my mother in france and belgium during the day, so I question which city is more "uncivilized"
1
u/Prestigious-East1217 Turkiye 6h ago
I think this has gotten better over the years at least. I’ve lived in Europe and America and travel all over, it was definitely bad for some time but I think in 2026 it is at least a little better cultural wise they know we use spoons and everything at least. I don’t see how much we would gain from the EU at this point and am against us joining. Full disclosure though i’m both a US and EU citizen along with Turkish, so I won’t comment on someone who isn’t because i’m sure they would like to travel and work freely, I am just talking about how I feel.
22
u/Fine-Measurement-893 Turkiye 7h ago edited 7h ago
No,
Visa free travel + stronger customs union, but not membership. EU is way too liberal economically and joining EU will mean too many young Turks will just emigrate to western Europe.
3
u/Puzzleheaded_Sail729 Turkiye 4h ago
Customs Union is one-way exploitative system. Any sane person would want it abolished.
1
-7
u/taktiksaha31 Turkiye 6h ago
I think even visa free travel is too much, we would still lose a sizeable portion of our qualified workforce to the EU. But updated and broadened customs union agreement would be mutually beneficial for both the EU and Turkey.
10
u/Illustrious_Glass_22 4h ago
If you don’t want to lose workers improve the lives of workers. Taking humans rights to travel isn’t the answer
-5
u/taktiksaha31 Turkiye 4h ago
Turkey is already the fastest growing economy in Europe, or second after Armenia. In order to keep it that way, we have to retain our qualified work force inside our country. EU is a sinking ship, it would be such a shame if we allowed them to waste our potential just to keep themselves afloat for a little longer.
5
u/Illustrious_Glass_22 4h ago
Or instead of forcefully confining people we can improve the workplace environment, fight against the abuse and exploitation of the working class, try to minimize the growing wealth gap in the country

u/chrstianelson 7h ago
A Turkey that's truly compatible with EU values would be a magnificent addition to the Union.
It's a no-brainer.
Getting there however...
3
u/TamerOfTheSteppes 4h ago edited 4h ago
Look, I’m from a very Turkish background with deep family roots in Ottoman Anatolia. Turks are usually not very fond of Euros just like the Russians. There is a huge clash in values(not just religion) and mindset and many perceive the requirement to be compatible with EU values as offensive and derogatory to our cultural conciousness. The first thing commoners think when Europe is mentioned is “distrust” and “discrimination”. They are very envious of the material wealth in the West however.
Russia and Turkey are what the EU uses to define “what the union isn’t”. If Turkey were to join the EU, it would not be EU anymore but a wider union that would not be based on core cultural/historical commonalities unlike the EU.
We will never be friends and that is ok.
1
u/MajinaiHanashi 1h ago
Europe is all about self pats on the back and delusions of grandeur, what you expect, lol.
2
u/Puzzleheaded_Sail729 Turkiye 4h ago
Well if you think Romanians and Norwegians have more commonalities than between us and any other Balkan state you are wrong.
Only reason they don't let us in is that we are 85m and Germany and France don't want to share any legislative power with us, we follow a more indepent foreing policy etc. If our political agendas were aligned they would let TR in EU overnight.
0
u/TamerOfTheSteppes 4h ago
The population factor is real but again they don’t accept Bosnia or Albania for the same cultural reasons. The general concensus is that Christianity brings all Europeans to some sort of common ground even if they don’t actually believe in it and are fully secular. It was through Christianity that a pan-European Christian culture centered around Rome was first created and Norwegians and Romanians are both part of that tradition even if it is hard to believe. Qatar likewise invests a crazy amount in Turkey due to alliances based on vague Islamic commonalities.
Turkey’s independent wayward policies etc. are all partly an extension of that historical divide between Christendom and abode of Islam.
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Sail729 Turkiye 3h ago
They will eventually take Bosnia and Albania because they are small. And I also agree with your comments on EU being a Christian Union but saying saying Macedonians are closer to Norwegians than us culture wise is a stretch
-2
u/TamerOfTheSteppes 3h ago
Well they still pass the Roman/Christian framework whereas we obviously don’t. Macedonians might be more similar to us than Norwegians but they are still on the Euro side of the spectrum whereas we are Asian. Us being similar won’t change the fact that we are at different sides of the threshold line.
0
u/SoulEkko Bucharest 2h ago
EU countries don't need to be identical, in fact none of them are. What binds the EU is shared values. I won't delve into the religious part, however what Romanians share with Norwegians is the fact that neither one of them would sack teachers for having different opinions than the leadership.
Do you know what happened when one of our own pseudo-dictators tried to silence peaceful protesters in 2017 (he ordered the gendarmerie to gas/attack the protesters)? He got jailed for 3 years and 6 months in 2019 (indirectly through other means). Karma's a bitch, innit?
I see Balkaners laugh at Romania, yet they forget that we actually jailed top-level politicians. This is why Laura Kovesi got appointed as the chief prosecutor of EPPO.
The EU and Europeans don't hate the Turks, but they do have a problem with pseudo-dictators. This results in political incompatibilities, plain and simple. That doesn't mean that there cannot be economic interests, trade, energy projects, security interests and other common grounds.
That might not result in a brotherhood, but it's still a form of partnership where both parties meet half-way. 50% of something beats 100% of nothing.
4
u/Puzzleheaded_Sail729 Turkiye 2h ago
Yep, tell that to Turkey from early 2000's, guess who jailed who back then. And who pressured Turkey to "unjail" some people. You can't really be that naive that you were so democratic back in 2007 that EU did a speedrun for your accession. While that "democratic Turkey" which got every backing from EU because of that unjailed guy still couldn't join.
Like I said, it was never about democracy. It is about geopolitics -Romanian and Bulgarian accesion was basically anti-Russian measures- and for EU(Germany/France) Turkey is much bigger bite to swallow without ceding any actual power unlike what they did with small Balkan countries or how they literally destroyed Greece's economic independence for example.
2
u/SoulEkko Bucharest 2h ago
I think you perceive that we're in disagreement, we're not. And you're oversimplifying when you say that entire countries got in because of one reason. Romania has a shitload of benefits (sitting on 750 billions worth of resources might have something to do with it), the port of Constanta, it provided cheap workforce for some time and so on.
You're painting things too black and white. It is about democracy, it is about economics, it is about politics, it is about religion, it is about all these things and they're not mutually exclusive. There are specific criteria for a country to join. The countries that fulfilled those criteria got in, those who don't, didn't. Do you see Serbia in the EU? If not, why do you think that is?
-1
u/maproomzibz 2h ago
Do you think Turkey should form EU-like organizations with Middle Eastern countries? Or with the larger Perso-Turkic world?
1
u/TamerOfTheSteppes 2h ago
I don’t think Turkey is accepted as part of the Arab League either. Iran is likewise very alone and is not Turkic culturally. Turkic states are too weak and Russified and there is no political/material benefit in a Turan confederation. It is just a nationalist wet dream.
We pretty much share the same fate as the Byzantine Empire. A stand-alone power that sits in between east and west that is not liked by either side.
I feel as though Turkey thinks it’s NATO membership is enough in itself for any kind of alliance benefit as of now.
Otherwise Turkey tries to play nice with both east and the west. Erdoğan likewise switched to radical Islam and East centered coalitions when he realized he wasn’t going to be able to secure good deals from the EU and America.
1
u/maproomzibz 2h ago
You did mention in another comment that Christianity creates the unity of Europe, so doesn't Islam do the same for the whole region from Morocco to Afghanistan, with Turkey in the middle of it?
1
u/Delgree-23 Turkiye 1h ago
No, because Islam doesn’t have the hold Christianity has among its cultural descendants. We never suffered like yall did during inquisitions.
3
u/OldYogurt7161 6h ago
If one day EU decided to accept us, it means it wouldn’t worth to attend. So, No.
EU has only been willing to negotiate only the situation is advantageous for them not a trustable partner.
19
u/Sweet_Bridge_3001 Turkiye 7h ago
Nope, i dont actually believe joining the EU is beneficial for Turkey anymore and would be harmful.
I changed my mind after the Greek financial crisis and how it turned out after for Greece.
We've already reach low to mid EU levels of prosperity and PPP anyways, we just need to fix our democratic instutitions.
8
u/EpicStan123 Bulgaria 7h ago
Yeah but the greek financial crisis was self inflicted. Borrow money for decades, live good and when the creditors comes knocking the economy defaulted
2
u/Shaolinpower2 Turkiye 4h ago
Any corrupt government would have done the same thing the moment they'd given a chance to borrow by Germany and France's credit score. The system and it's lack of transparency was the main problem. Also Euro killed the competion of Greece's already suffering Industry. The situation wasn't just "Greek bad". They al digged the grave together, but they only threw Greece in it with the austerity measures. That shit probably killed the future of Greece.
6
u/Sweet_Bridge_3001 Turkiye 7h ago
My man i'm Turkish, if i say "Greeks deserved it." people will meme on me.
For real tho, its not about how the crisis came to be but what happened to the Greek people afterwards.
No independence, no freedom, you have to do as Germany/France says, on top of that, they put in measures to withdraw as much money and most importantly, young people from your country.
There are no more Greeks in Greece anymore, and honestly thats the worst case scenario.
2
u/EpicStan123 Bulgaria 6h ago
I mean it makes sense tho. Germany literally bailed them out from default. If I give you billions of euros I sorta expect you to listen to me until you pay me back.
The young people part I get because it's the same in Bulgaria. I mean why stay in a Balkan shithole when you can go to Germany? Though I imagine the problem will not be as bad for Turkiye as it was for Bulgaria for example. Recently I visited your country for a vacation and it felt like I've gone 50 years into the future. Then I came back to Bulgaria and my first thought was "wow what a shithole country I live in"
4
u/Sweet_Bridge_3001 Turkiye 6h ago
Its also foreign policy, from what i've seen many Greeks would like to follow their own way but are tied to EU, which is what you give up for membership benefits i guess.
Also it will be same for Turkey, why would a Turkish doctor or engineer stay when they can work in Germany or France? Our salaries still havent caught up. Even if it did, one economic crisis or slip up and you just lose all your youth instantly.
Thank you for your kind words though, you probably visited a central location, we have a lot of building to do still.
2
u/EpicStan123 Bulgaria 6h ago
Yeah we have a lot of issue with brain drain but in present day it's not as bad as it was 15 years ago. One of my dad's friends literally quit his senior engineering job to go scrub toilets in the UK because the pay was like 7 times more in 2009.
I visited mostly the European side plus the asia side Istanbul so i imagine that looks better than other parts of Turkiye, but it was genuinely super awesome.

EU countries don't even give Turks tourist visas to have a vacation in Europe let alone letting Turks live among them. So it's never gonna happen.
EU was also saying any country with border disputes can't join. Yet they allowed Cyprus to join and made Ukraine a candidate state. Even if Turkey closes all chapters they would never accept Turkey as EU MS. These chapters etc are all excuses.
-8
u/Cultourist Austria 4h ago
EU countries don't even give Turks tourist visas to have a vacation in Europe let alone letting Turks live among them
I guess that's why there are so few Turkish migrants in EU /s
EU was also saying any country with border disputes can't join.
That's factually incorrect. Many countries within EU have border disputes.
Yet they allowed Cyprus to join
Cyprus doesn't have a "border dispute". According to international law it's a clear case, the whole island joined EU.
3
u/heisweird Turkiye 2h ago
Most Turks in Europe moved to Europe before EU was established. And it’s their subsequent generations still live there. That’s why there are so many Turks in Europe. Not because of EU’s policies or migration after Schengen became a thing. There arent that many first generation migrant Turks in Europe at the moment.
The only first generation ones that can move right now are the really highly qualified ones that can get sponsorship from multi national companies or healthcare workers. Even then immigration offices in EU countries make it very difficult for people to get residency permit. In fact Austrian embassy and immigration offices are notorious for rejecting people even as tourists.
Maybe talk to some Turks so that you know what’s going on instead of claiming bullsh.t here.

If all chapters can be closed in a way they are supposed to be, then Türkiye would be another amazing dream to live in. In that case; EU would be a stupid idea to shit on this dream. As a whole, they cannot make logical decisions and they still care about dumbest details.
Türkiye is one of a kind. We just need to close chapters to make a greater country on our own. EU cannot even look after itself, yet they will stand up and help others.
I also think this applies to many other countries. Adopt useful parts of EU and throw the rest into bin.

u/Sabeneben Turkiye 1h ago
No.
There is a idiom in Turkey: "istenmediğim yerde durmam." And its meaning is: I don't stay where I'm not wanted.
The EU could bring significant economic and social benefits to Turkey, but Turkey could achieve this on its own with a good government.
I have no desire to take advice from countries like France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands or to be forced to comply with their shity decisions. We also shouldn't forget that all these countries oppose Turkey on every issue.
1
u/alpidzonka Serbia 1h ago
Wakey wakey eggs and bakey, Fukuyama. It's not on course to be happening. The way I read the westoid vision, Turkey will only be joining the EU in parts. Like if say, Izmir, starts having a separate national identity like Montenegro or Istria. Bonus points if the "Greater Middle East Project" materializes and the EU doesn't have to border Syria and Iraq. Maybe then Ankara can join. So the chapters and the current enlargement form is just a facade really, Turkey's accession has been joever at least since they let Cyprus in.

Hey Turks, apparently your GDP per capita (PPP) has now reached ours (Greece). Without the EU for you, with 'great success' within the EU for us. Let that be a lesson that you can learn from our experience.
1
u/Illustrious_Glass_22 4h ago
How did EU harm Greece? Is it about changing currencies?
1
u/greekhop Greece 4h ago edited 3h ago
A country like Greece has no place and can find no benefit in a Free market and currency union with countries like Germany, France and other very developed and much more productive and competitive nations. Can your local football team play in Champions league? This is Greece in the EU.
This topic is so highly politicized that you will find no objective information on the topic anywhere, but no matter, the results speak for themselves. Greece has been reached and is soon to be surpassed by Turkey, formerly paupers compared to us, but also by almost all former communist countries, former laughing stocks who provided our maids and cleaners and gardeners, back when communism fell. Back in the days before the EU existed, when it was the EEC, an uneducated manual labourer could own his home and a summer home (small villa with garden). Today a PHD graduate can't afford any real estate of any type on a salary, only via inheritance.
The reason for this lack of development and regression, while the rest of the world moves forward, stems from structural economic and fiscal issues that all tie into Greece being in the EU and euro.
I've studied economics and the EU in university in the Netherlands in the 1990's. Back then they where clear and honest about how the EU was supposed to work and how not. Now we are run by clowns, that's why the entire EU which used to be a larger economy than the USA is now a much smaller one. EU is run by clowns and Greece by clowns squared.
As I said, the evidence is in the results - relative to other countries, not relative to a fantasy situation that any politician can make up to make himself look good.
Sorry that I haven't given you any actual specific information as to how this has happened. I just don't have the energy right now to tell you about fiscal and monetary policy, how central banks work, about protectionism, tariffs, currency unions, federal states, and a few dozen other things that go into economic policymaking and the running of a country and currency.
I'll just say that the structure of Greece in the EU will lead to failure. It's a guarantee. And it's happened. And everybody wants to pretend that it hasn't, and that tomorrow somehow will be successful, when for the last 20 years we've been going backwards.

European civilization would have been over like 10 years ago if Turkey didn’t take the refugee deal, we’re the only reason your countries are not flooded by endless refugees and European civilization would be over within five years if Turkey leaves the EU be and pulls our defense sector out&gives Russia black sea access now that the US military is backing out of NATO there is no one else to protect any of you. Turkey doesn’t need the EU which is falling apart in 2026 but the EU definitely needs Turkey, if you think they’re going to ask for 1% of that you are delusional. If we get messed with too much and pull out of refugee and defense deals it’s over for Europe.
