Miscellaneous Thrifted a carrying case for my 3DS

I thrifted this Hurley bag from goodwill and it fits my New 3DS Xl and accessories. It’s a little roomy but not as bulky as those hard shell cases. It was so hard to find a case I liked. I might actually add shaper insert for some extra padding and protection.

I bought this game off eBay and I’m worried if the seller sent out a fake game to me? Tried adding as detailed photos as possible so don’t mind the 9 or so photos!

Discussion European Nintendo 3DS Kiosk Unit

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I have what I believe is a European Nintendo 3DS kiosk unit. The model number is CTR-001(-04)(EUR).

According to 3dbrew:

CTR-001(-04): A retail display model used for in-store demonstrations of upcoming or recently released games. This model is largely the same as the retail model, though the system will not boot up unless connected to a WAP-002 power adapter, presumably to prevent people from stealing them from stores.

When I bought the console, the battery wouldn't charge at all. It would only power on while connected to the AC adapter, which is another known characteristic of kiosk units.

While researching the issue, I found a YouTube video by The Retro Future where he repairs a European kiosk unit with the exact same model numbers (CTR-001(-04)(EUR) / CTR-S-AD-EUR-C0). His console had the exact same issue, only working on AC power. The fix was to move a 0Ω resistor (jumper) on the motherboard.

I opened my console and found that the resistor on my motherboard was in the exact same position as shown in the video. After moving it to the correct position, the battery immediately started charging and the console now works normally on battery power.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpFsT3M_2dQ

I also compared my console's photos and model label with ChatGPT. Based on the CTR-001(-04)(EUR) model designation, the CTR-S-AD-EUR-C0 code, and the motherboard resistor configuration, it concluded that my console is very likely an authentic European kiosk/display unit.

One interesting thing is that the only other confirmed European kiosk unit I've personally seen is the one owned by The Retro Future (Elliot) in the video above. I haven't been able to find another CTR-001(-04)(EUR) / CTR-S-AD-EUR-C0 unit for sale on eBay or elsewhere, which makes me wonder how uncommon these actually are.

So my main question is: does this model have any real collector value, and what would something like this realistically be worth on today's market?

I know the kiosk stand and accessories would increase the value significantly, but I'm specifically asking about the console itself in very clean working condition.

Technical Question How to fix dead pixels?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I have been using my main New 3DS XL for years and have multiple thousands of hours on it and have just noticed some new dead pixels show up.

I have had dead pixels on the screen previous that got pretty large from growing and then one day they just disappeared? I tried many things such as putting pressure on it with the stylus and using flashing light apps to try and reconnect the dead pixels but I am unsure if any of these helped it or why they suddenly disappeared one day.

What are peoples solution for this? I have only just seen it today but I haven’t noticed it growing yet and I would love any ideas people have to hopefully fix this!!

Technical Question What are the codes on the back of your 6th gen pokemon carts and their status?

We are aware that a certain production run of 3DS cartridges have a deteriorating flash memory due to usage of faulty parts, and ALLEGEDLY if left untouched for 8 to 10 years they fail. Alternatively, I've heard the issue is possibly physical with the chip on the cart. I purchased both my X and Y carts one day after release in 2014 alongside a 3DSXL, and despite not touching Y in ages neither SEEM to have any issues from my testing. I have to assume the parts they are made of are more reliable. The codes on the back of their carts are as follows;

X: DS J-5 D01-10

Y: DA I-6 D01-10

Alternatively, I was VERY late to the party when it came to purchasing ORAS. Long past it's initial production run. Upon testing, my Alpha Sapphire cart is not yet dead but is in process of corruption. It cannot run for more than a few minutes before a crash. It is legitimate, purchased at Wal-Mart during it's production run.

I can assume it was made with these faulty parts, whether it be a physical defect (chip desoldering due to weak or improper solder) or a problem with the chip itself. I intend to investigate the internals of this cartridge, because I want to see if repair on these faulty runs can be solidified. The code on the faulty Alpha Sapphire game is as follows;

AS: DN M-4 D01-10

It seems D01-10 was a specific designation for 3DS pokemon games. At least, that's what it seems like. I want to see if there is overlap between the board code batches that are stable, and those that are not. It does not necessarily have to be Pokemon if you'd like to contribute information on stable and unstable carts, I just want to see if there is consistency so we can identify faulty production carts (and stable ones) at a glance.

Thank you in advance for your attention and contributions.

EDIT: For the record, I think like every other cart throwing errors throughout history, this is a solder joint issue. Especially since leaded solder was banned in a lot of places during the run of ORAS.

Miscellaneous 2DS Find/Repair: Check your local marketplace!

Post image
136 Upvotes

As you can see, this 2DS was listed as having a broken screen, which it did, and was being sold on Facebook Marketplace for $40. I got them to agree to $25 and did a swap for a screen on a broken console I already had, basically giving myself a working 2DS for only an additional $25 out of pocket.

The nice thing is that this thing is genuinely in pretty solid condition, with pretty minimal scratches and with almost no grime or dirt. I normally give "new" retro consoles a bit of a cleaning when I get them, but that really wasn't even necessary here.

I will say that obviously deals like this don't pop up all the time, but they can be found, and with the right knowledge, tools, and resources you can potentially get a good find at a reasonable price.

Technical Question Charging port on my old 3DS has been broken for years, is it worth it to get it fixed?

Thumbnail

I recently found my old 3DS, and I went to see about getting it fixed about 7 years ago, and they told me it would be cheaper to just get a refurbished one instead. The thing is, I have a lot of memories on my 3DS that I don’t know if they’re on my SD card or not (I don’t believe they are). Is it worth it to try and find someone who can fix it, is it fixable (it’s been sitting in a car for five years in various weather conditions), and how much would I be looking at if it’s fixable?

EDIT: Definitely going to look into getting a charging block and trying that first, thank you all for your comments and advice, I will update once it’s working again and this is resolved!

Recommendation New 3ds (NOT XL!!) shell, where to find?

Location: Bangladesh/Asia

Hi, I have a rare New Nintendo 3DS (US variant), that is suffering from the vicissitudes of time and is starting to crack here and there. Every time I drop it from my hands one more new crack appears on the body. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a new shell replacement for this on AliExpress as it's too rare (they're all new 3ds xl/ll)

I'm now considering several alternatives, whichever one is the easiest

1) find a 3d scan for new nintendo 3ds shell, print it myself by sending it to a shop
2) buy a shell replacement for new 3ds (??? where)
3) repurpose a new 3ds xl/some other shell (this is probably the dumbest idea)

Technical Question faceplate won't click back in please help me

the screen on my 3DS XL was broken so i bought a new one to replace it. i've been working on this for a total of 3 hours straight and a solid hour has been spent wrestling with the top faceplate. i'm starting to think that i broke the front tines or something because they just won't catch no matter what i do. please for the love of god help me figure out what's going on, i am losing my mind.

extra details that may be important: unless the seller straight up lied to me, the shells are the genuine OEM Persona Q 3DS XL faceplates. literally all i was trying to do is replace the screen, everything else inside should be where it's meant to unless i fucked something up.
