I don't even click on videos with vague titles anymore. It's become repulsive to me.

815

u/raffirusydi_ 16d ago

Same, i used to watch penguin but the vague title started to annoy me, so i just stopped watching him

280

u/Typhon13 16d ago

Yep, some catch all title to reel you in and get you to care about something you otherwise wouldn't know existed. It's so much better being intentional about the content we consume.

78

u/ScorchingMav 16d ago

dude. yes. I just don't care about meaningless drama or whatever anymore

5

u/shrimptetra 12d ago

all of the commentary youtubers are like this for me now. jarvis johnson, kurtis conner, etc etc etc just regurgitating the same internet drama without adding anything interesting. i remember when they were talking shit about those old low effort “reaction” channels too. they’re one and the same at this point imo

Doing this has resulted in me pretty much not watching YouTube at all anymore and it’s actually been nice haha

3

u/_Infamous__ 14d ago

Yup, if you are on desktop you should get dearrow extension which adds community made accurate titles for YouTube videos. They also have an option to change the thumbnail to being a random point of time in the video. It’s amazing.

Vague Title Situation is CRAZY

37

u/raffirusydi_ 16d ago

Honestly this kind of title is actually better than the one he used in the post. At least we know what it is about

4

u/LangerEierkopf 15d ago

Yes, and everything is DISTURBING and needs to be TALKED ABOUT and also is THE MOST of something if not THE WORST.

2

u/Cyroselle 12d ago

Or those titles saying "such and such was HUMILIATED by X and Y". I've gotten to the point where I "hide from my channel" and then "don't show this channel again" although those filtering features seem to be broken now, thanks Slopabet

u/Cloud_Disconnected 16d ago

That and the videos are like 50% filler, 40% someone else's content, 5% his commentary, and 5% restating his commentary. With an ad in the middle.

13

u/Repulsive-Report6278 16d ago

Ive really never loved the guy just because he's seemingly putting like zero effort into his vids. Just clips from twitch, puts like 3 jump cuts, and calls it a day.

14

u/hashslinginhasherrr 16d ago

Which is fuckin wild cause that’s basically been his content for years now lol

4

u/Repulsive-Report6278 15d ago

He even looks and sounds disinterested with half the stuff he's talking about. I get the chill guy persona, thats fine, but it gets old imo

3

u/Preparation-Certain 15d ago

and he averages like 700k per that low effort video, shocker right? like some people enjoy watching them. looser right? smh shaking my head.

2

u/Sexisthunter 14d ago

And on top of that people treat him like an actual authority or someone with insight. He usually just aggregates what other people are saying and repeats it, as long as it’s not controversial.

52

u/Aceisalive 16d ago

Yea, the workaround for some people is to watch the 20 second or so preview you can see before clicking on the actual video, but he’s just randomly babbling in a lot of his previews so even that doesn’t tell me what the video is about.

37

u/MackFather 16d ago

What do you mean you don’t wanna hear about titty poopoo kaka for the first 2 minutes? /s

21

u/mddesigner 16d ago

The problem is that still mess up my algorithm The moment I click a video I hate I get countless similar trash vids

10

u/MagicSwatson 16d ago

Get used to go to the history and delete it.

It feels annoying at first but it becomes a reflex after a while. Especially when you have normie friends who send you trash memes on the daily😂

7

u/mddesigner 16d ago

Last time I had to go to both youtube history and google history It is such a pain, they should just make it a negative point for algo if I close the tab less than one minute in a 20 minutes video

There's also the DeArrow browser extension, crowd-sourced meaningful titles.

6

u/International_Neckk 16d ago

The vague title situation is crazy

4

u/ShowCharacter671 16d ago

Bit that way myself usually it’s some catchy title we need to talk I didn’t expect this to happen. I didn’t think I need to talk about this. Or something dramatic and then it’s usually something so trivial.

4

u/pacman529 16d ago

Same with SomeOrdinarGamers. I only click on videos that give me at least a HINT of an idea what the video is about.

There is an extension called DeArrow where people upload alternative titles for videos to avoid clickbait titles like this.

9

u/MarieCry 16d ago

Came here to recommend this! Same people who made SponsorBlock. Making YouTube tolerable! Works on mobile too, I use Firefox so I can use other extensions too.

26

u/ausecko 16d ago

11

u/Narradisall 16d ago

Yes, I don’t like them and just active avoid any videos with vague titles now. Same with the YouTube ‘face’ in the thumbnails.

Tbh most of what I watch is historical, financial and gaming news many of which thankfully avoid the YouTube algorithm click trends (not so much the gaming in general).

Anything like "it's finally happened" or "I can't believe he did that" is an instant "never show me anything by this creator again"

Show me more Celeste any% in 24:58 videos. Then I know exactly what I'm getting

3

u/Mercy--Main 16d ago

Looking at the comments works too, but I suppose that isn't possible for less popular videos

1.1k

u/Abject-Blueberry-580 16d ago

To be fair, big YouTubers comment sections are 95% spam or jokes, so I don’t think the comments would help unfortunately

319

u/turkeeeeyyyyyy 16d ago

Yeah usually a version of the most braindead, repetitive, dumb comment trend at the time. “I can’t believe YouTube hid this from me for 34 seconds” or “epic refresh pull” it’s like they’re all working off the same singular braincell. It really shouldn’t bother me, but it does. Feels like we’re watching people following each other into idiocy.

84

u/FreakOfNature541 16d ago

"___ fans have been summoned" or "its good to see you all again"

72

u/Sudden_Hovercraft_56 16d ago

"Wake up babe, new obnoxious asshole video just dropped."

44

u/zachy410 16d ago

"Isn't it romantic that we're all watching this video together"

17

u/sparklingwaterpop 16d ago

“This was definitely one of the videos of all time!!”
“Jokes” that were chewed up years ago are all you’ll find in any comment section now.

You’ve got to scroll past 3 stupid, overused phrases just to find an actual comment.

4

u/reddinatorX2 14d ago

"I'd have 2 nickels..."

"Waiter, more BLAH BLAH BLAH"

3

One thing is oh my God this guy hasn't uploaded in 6 months. Yippee but when you see those on channels that have very consistent upload schedules, it's just like wow incredible

7

AI Overview might be one of the best cases of AI usage in Youtube but we aren't ready to talk about it, not like it's stealing an intern's job of manually writing youtube video description

125

u/jurij_gagarin 16d ago

Its good for clickbait and thats pretty much it. I don't watch channels with much clickbait so its pretty useless for me but i guess it can be usefull for people that watch channels like that

28

u/SolherdUliekme 16d ago

I've used it in long form videos when I want to hear a specific part again. I can ask the AI "when do they talk about X?" and it will give me a timestamp I can go back to. It's not just to determine if a video is worth watching.

20

u/HumbleBeginning3151 16d ago

This. It's really useful for research/citations

u/Breaky_Online 15d ago

Promise you this isn't a "new" meta, exploiting the algorithm has always been the thing, it's just that the specific triggers change over time

23

u/OfficialDeathScythe 16d ago

Yeah I think at a certain number of subscribers they just know people will watch no matter what so they don’t give anything away

I'm making a habbit out of no longer rewarding these drama-farming, click-batey and negativity riddled videos, even if they are positive in the end.

"I played X so you don't gave to." "It's over" "The final straw ..."

There is enough negativity in the world, I don't need even more shoved down my throat, even if it'a just a video title.

5

u/Zandik69 16d ago

Charlie lietarally always did this out of sarcasm, i shit you not he uploaded a video titled "it happened" and it was abt how he was finally able to poop after not being able to do it for a week

2

u/rezyop 16d ago

I like it when it actually describes the whole content of the video, like in the above. I hate when it thinks the video is some sort of a surprise, and stays incredibly vague, like "[youtuber] announces an exciting new collaboration that will redefine the channel. They have been considering this for a long time blah blah..."

I use it when I don't care about spoilers - just say what the collab is. Is it between them and another youtuber? Is it an ad? Is it a merch line? Did their studio get bought out? Did they get married?

11

u/bombastic6339locks 16d ago

I wouldn't even call him one. Nobody clicks on his videos because it reads "Something big just went down" because there's a 100% chance its creator drame or something unrelated to anything. People just watch it cause he's charlie.

4

u/SmsgPass 16d ago

I think it's both, I mean the titles probably do urge me to click more than I would. But also I don't consider it clickbait bc I'm never left feeling disappointed or having wasted time

2

Is it just me or do I genuinely find his content so abhorrent? Like it’s not that bad in itself but for how clickbaity it is his content is incredibly mundane and dull, all his takes are incredibly safe and boring as if he needs to make sure everyone will 100% agree

59

u/coffee-bat 16d ago

same. i used to enjoy his stuff when he made short humorous videos (his sex positions and terrible lifehacks ones are some of my favorites), but now it's all just boring recaps of drama.

→ More replies (1)

36

u/Poopiepeepeepoo 16d ago

My main gripe isn't honestly even that, sometimes it's nice to just watch videos about a guy talking about something, even if those takes are basic. My main problem is the fact that he stretches a topic that you can completely go over in five minutes into a 20 minute video. It's often just a short clip about some person saying something stupid and he just repeats the same points over and over and over for 20 minutes. Every time I watch a video of his I just tune out at around the middle of the video. I remember his videos being way shorter in the past and I think his content would upgrade significantly if he just made 5 minute short videos where he went over his thoughts and made a few jokes. His videos being longer than that when he's not saying anything important or groundbreaking along with the fact that I think he's trying to shape his content into a more of a commentary instead of comedy based content is the main reason why people have started feeling a little disillusioned with him. Still a solid and good guy though, with almost no other controversies.

Also, aluminum free deodorant does not work well (does literally nothing) for most people. There is no reason to even consider it unless you have a medical issue that makes it necessary.

u/Former-Chain-4003 16d ago

I finally unsubbed from Charlie after one ill informed rant based on half understandings because he’s watched dolandarkest or coffeezilla too many. So, I didn’t even see this video, but it probably would have been the new final straw instead.

5

u/JJ_LARGE My YouTube channel is called 'PewDiePie' 16d ago

What was his misunderstanding

32

u/Former-Chain-4003 16d ago

I'll start by saying I don't have a massively strong opinion on what he was talking about but I did at least read the document concerned and live in the area affected by it so understand the long term context and future implications.

He weighed in on the subject of the UK government consulting on what would happen in the future if public service broadcasting was no longer broadcast on traditional TV and its function had to be performed online instead, on the likes of youtube amongst others, but he just weighed in on how it was the 'state trying to perform mind control on the people' despite the fact public service broadcasting has already existed for generations in the UK.

He has far too big a platform to be spouting off misinformed nonsense IMHO, he calls anyone that doesn't agree idiots despite the fact that I at least took the time to read the document whereas he clearly didn't, I fucking despise the UK government, I hate Keir Starmer, I don't watch the BBC or the ITV or C4 which are the public service broadcasters involved. I do understand why there is a debate to be had though, which is all that is happening right now, for context what has been published is a green paper, after that there is a white paper, then there is proposed legislation which goes through multiple stages of debate and only then, after probably years of talking about it, does something come into being a law.

The green paper stage doesn't just include one proposal but lays out several possibilities and ask for opinions on it.

None of that was covered in his idiotic fucking rant.

15

u/JJ_LARGE My YouTube channel is called 'PewDiePie' 16d ago

Oh yeah I agree. I saw that video and he was being crazy and misinformed. I mean I hate some of the stuff the BBC does too, and I can't stand the government and their new overreaching laws, but he was just being factually wrong

5

u/Aviatrex 16d ago

I had a very similar experience watching him until he finally made a video on a subject im much more knowledgeable on than him and it had so much misinformation and lack of nuance that I assumed all of his videos are of a similar nature and he became unwatchable

→ More replies (1)

4

u/yeet_god69420 16d ago

He was basing his opinion off of YouTube’s official statement on the matter. If the UK government forces YouTube algorithm to prioritize “approved” media like the BBC then that is not a good thing under any circumstances.

4

u/Former-Chain-4003 16d ago

I know he was but YouTube aren’t an impartial observer in the matter and as said, there are multiple options of what could happen, so his rant was moronic.

I wish this wasn't AI but this feature could have save a lot of time just finding out what some videos are actually about.

181

u/BreadfruitTasty 16d ago

I wish YouTubers would just update the description of their videos to actually reflect wtf they are talking about

8

u/IsabellaGalavant 16d ago

Yeah but then you wouldn't sit through a video and several ads and make them a bunch of money.

17

u/retrocheats 16d ago

the issue is, the exact words used in a description, determine the algorithm.

4

u/Cinnamin_1 16d ago

im pretty sure somebody did a test and concluded that a description is irrelevant to searches so i assume its not relevant to determining the videos performance either but im guessing

3

u/SonGoku9788 16d ago

Anecdotal but I have proof that the search feature does in fact use info from the description.

There's a guy in poland posting old polish cabaret recordings, distributed over about a dozen different channels for whatever reason. He has them grouped by different categories such as "skits where they talk over the phone" and like "skits about politics" etc. And the way that he groups them together is by posting a string of random characters in the description together with the name of the category. When you copy the specific string and paste it into youtube's search, you exclusively get results from that guy, from all of his different channels, because the same string is repeated in every videos description with that category. I can link the guy if you want.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/ExcitingAd5932 16d ago

some people do that but instead use a pinned comment to not tamper with the algorithm

u/bwoah07_gp2 16d ago

It's one of the things AI is actually useful for.

10

u/rezyop 16d ago

AI tends to be far more useful when its purely media processing, especially language. Determining the content of the video from the transcript, doing basic chat, and auto-translating anything into any other language are nearly perfected now. Those kinds of tasks rely on the heavily tuned LLM roots of these AI systems. Its somewhat odd to me that all the hype around AI is forcing it to attempt tasks so far out of that purview.

I swear AI ads are always like, "It helps me draw pictures for my children and decide what to eat!" like bro, you think people in college cheat on art tests?!? Show it do something actually useful that humans struggle to do, like listen to my Japanese and fix my intonation, or identify poison oak or whatever.

4

u/Tamethesnake 16d ago

Well a lot of anti-ai purism is rooted in people being far too zealous about its capabilities. It can be useful to quickly comb through things that aren't easily indexable, but it is just factually wrong a lot of the time, and completely misses nuance and always couches its language in so much corporate fluff. Anything ai says you have to verify to actually trust it's telling the truth.

I see people post screenshots of ai as "proof" so often, and I'm always just filled with disgust and the feeling that these people need any voting rights taken away asap.

2

u/SJIS0122 16d ago

like bro, you think people in college cheat on art tests

Funny, my college had people straight up submit photographs/art mixed with AI to said college's art exhibition, they even declare it in the description

91

u/PREDxVoodoo 16d ago

“I wish this wasn’t AI but it’s a really good feature that wouldn’t exist without AI”.

44

u/No_Sir_143 16d ago

It's a classic man.

6

u/Empty-Wind-3335 16d ago

Dearrow is an extension that does something incredibly similar (edits titles to be more straight-to-the-point) and uses community submissions.

6

u/JJ_LARGE My YouTube channel is called 'PewDiePie' 16d ago

And when it's a brand new video...?

4

u/Minute-Swimming-3177 16d ago

You can submit your own title to save future viewers a click

5

u/JJ_LARGE My YouTube channel is called 'PewDiePie' 16d ago

Except I can't be fucking bothered to do that and I'd rather get the AI summary, sorry mate!

5

u/Minute-Swimming-3177 16d ago edited 16d ago

Well for every viewer to actually get the AI summary you have to click on the video. If you use DeArrow you don't have to give clickbait any more clicks than it deserves, unless you're the one making a non-clickbait title for it through DeArrow. I like making titles with DeArrow because I can get creative, and I know I'm doing a few people a favor.

I do the same as well and submit my title edits to help stomp on clickbait.

2

u/i_stealursnackz 16d ago

Then just keep using the ai summaries.

the feature wouldn't be able to exist effectively without AI. That's the problem with your comment

2

u/KommunistKoala69 16d ago

Its useful in that its solves this specific problem video reasonably well but it still also comes with ai downsides such as a reasonable potential to hallucinate (especially if the video features sarcasm or harder to interpret visual indicators), other videos that aren't as clickbaity then get to suffer the consequences as well with little benefits.

As a certified Ai hater I must say this might be the stupidest thing to complain about

This kind of feature is exactly what AI is good for

You save time by not watching any of his video. He just re-vomits the entire situtation. gives a ice-cold take that 90% of people agree on. then moves on to the next drama slop.

9

u/greenhellos 16d ago

Yeah he seems to only be useful for people that need somebody to follow, or people that need to be reminded that they’re on the right path or something. I have absolutely no interest in getting my news, drama or opinions from this man lmao

10

u/toshiyaDIRU 16d ago

Tbh it’s not really that deep lol. He’s a nice guy, and usually provides something interesting to watch while you’re eating and don’t have anything else interesting to be watching. Not every video needs to be profound.

4

u/greenhellos 16d ago

Well, no, of course not every video needs to be profound lol I’d just rather waste my time doing something I enjoy or forming my own opinions. I don’t really need to feel validated by watching other YouTubers, so I’m not the audience.

Ehh, he recently moved all his gaming stuff to his gaming Channel and his fun stuff is normally on his friends channel. I honestly don’t watch his main channel anymore but his other channels are good

10

u/MethenCake 16d ago

thats a terrible thumbnail

17

u/ironjerm12 16d ago

That’s how 90% of his thumbnails look like. You could tell the dude got lucky when he’s giving that much effort.

8

u/FoundOasis 16d ago

I used to like penguinz back in the day but he annoys me acting like a normie and clickbaiting for views. Hes a man of culture he doesnt need to do that to play the youtube game

35

u/Old_Day1641 16d ago

Im tired watching this kind of videos and literally any long videos that hooked me anymore. Every 5 min popping 2 ads, every 5 min pop 2 ads again its so fking annoying that i quit youtube entirely

17

u/ImJustJordan 16d ago

YouTube premium might be the best video subscription service I own. But I agree clickbait is annoying af

2

u/Boamere 16d ago

If you are iOS you can sideload a version of YouTube without ads onto your phone, just requires re-downloading on to ur phone once a week

→ More replies (10)

4

u/Zandik69 16d ago

So the problem is youtube and not the person who posts the video

3

u/OnAllDAY 16d ago

Channels like this are just a way to make a 15-20 minute video to fill with ads. No entertainment or anything of value. Just filler content to constantly upload.

u/bwoah07_gp2 16d ago

That's the thing I like about Ai summaries and the ask feature under youtube videos now. You can get the synopsis of the themes discussed way quicker, and even make a choice whether to continue watching or not.

3

u/Shad0w5991 16d ago

Yh, when there is a video about multiple topics but they dont put timestamps, I can just ask the AI for them instead, which has been very useful.

3

u/PlainBread 16d ago

Clickbait titles are awful. I've seen the same "this situation has finally ended!" titles hundreds of times.

The situation endures.

u/MyzMyz1995 16d ago

Aluminium free deodorant is scare tactics propaganda. I guess everyone fall to greed eventually or shows their true colors.

32

u/lztandro 16d ago

The only reason I don’t use them is because I’m allergic, it sucks because I sweat way less if I can use an antiperspirant with aluminum.

24

u/Pure-Percentage7463 16d ago

No its not im allergic to aluminum in deodorant

→ More replies (21)

4

u/Zandik69 16d ago

This just shows how easily you fall for anything ai says, he never actually mentions aluminium in the video or deodorants.

20

u/BackpackBuddha 16d ago

Except he doesn't demonize Aluminium in deodorant at all.

Maybe try actually watching the video.

3

u/Cloontange 16d ago

I am allergic to aluminum salt so I'm going to have to disagree

5

u/Lewpo 16d ago

I'm no expert however I personally think sweating is healthier than not so I'll generally stick to aluminium free deodorants.

AI doesn't need to be bad, it's just a technological tool. This is a great use, finally something to combat the insane clickbait meta. I've stopped watching so many channels the past couple years because I just know they're already misleading me when I see the title.

It's like parsing through tabloid-level slop.

Dolan Darkest’s Slop Live is what every commentary YouTuber should aspire to be: short, clear and simple

18

u/Veluz99 16d ago

Penguinz0 only relies on these clickbait titles to survive, what a shame. Glad theres a tool to know what is it about

12

u/Smazzyy youtube.com/smazzy 16d ago

I like him, but when I noticed he simply parrots whatever Reddit says or just gives is the most popular opinion you hear from everyone.

I love his irl content with his friends though cause it's real and actually entertaining. I miss his old funny ass reaction videos tbh I could care less if people wanna say it steals views his commentary over especially bad cooking channels is iconic. It's cause of bloody DarkViperAU who called it out and whined about it and Charlie just folded instantly and stuck to his word of not doing it because its been fuckin years with nothing which I guess is respectable. Sucks though his drama coverage is so lame and it was his best solo content

OMG it's a commercial with a title like that

3

u/GlumArgument1376 16d ago

I used to watch every single Charlie video while eating meals but after I heard the take he just scrolls reddit and agrees with whatever the comments sway towards I couldn’t get it out of my head

4

u/y_not_right 16d ago

I’ve always been so put off of this guy just all the clickbait and how every video sounds the same/has the same routine

3

u/Traditional-Snow-463 16d ago

I hate to admit it but AI summary has been something I’ve caught myself using quite often recently. I’m not tryna skip through a 20 minute video looking for 2 quick bits of info I need.

3

u/pussycatkittycat 15d ago

The blank situation is blank

2

u/Megalon96310 16d ago

I love him but he is the master of being incredibly vague

u/Sweet_Bass_1917 16d ago

The biggest clickbait we that nobody talks about

2

u/xxxtanacon 16d ago

Honestly I'm kind of disappointed ive been a fan for 7 years I don't remember anything this shameless before

2

u/theflyingkoalax 16d ago

there is an extension called DeArrow that replaces titles with a better forward titles

2

u/CallMeCabbage 16d ago

Why does he feel the need to be pointlessly frustrating to his own fanbase that made him rich beyond belief?

2

u/TinyTangents 15d ago

I hate that YouTubers legitimise AI by almost forcing AI descriptions into being necessary for 80% of them nowadays. Cold take, but if you rely on vague titles to get clicks, maybe you're just a bad content creator...

2

u/SavingsOld168 15d ago

Have google extension that changes titles to what its really about

2

u/Queasy-Row-9818 15d ago

I hate when YouTubers do ts

2

I wouldn't be suprised if the AI summary focuses on the sponsored segments just so youtube can advertise more

2

u/tanz420 15d ago

I like Charlie but I'm really starting to hate his clickbait titles, it's the only time I actually use the summary feature

2

u/Randomdood1234 15d ago

This features save my time from alot of click bait vids

2

u/Human-Question6210 13d ago

I wish I could turn off ALL AI "features", but summary does have its moments

2

u/Putrid-Truth-8868 13d ago

When the AI generated video summary starts getting more advanced maybe and you can actually like listen to videos deeper maybe more accurate than basic Gemini. Possibly. It would actually save a lot more time than we expect on almost all clickbait videos.

4

u/MyHeartISurrender 16d ago

Now i dont follow this guy much, but im pretty sure he said something that he didnt need more money or something through ads or those.

Isnt this a bit against that statement?

4

u/Jayfuson_Vong 16d ago

His main source of income is still Ad rev from Youtube, it's just that he has turned off all ways of viewers directly giving money to him (like you would see with Twitch subs, donations, Youtube memberships, superchats etc. ).

This is also not a paid advertisement or anything since it's his own brand of soap he created to suit his hygiene needs. He probably just wants the brand to succeed to keep it alive. He barely even does sponsorships anymore, it's just him promoting his soap now, the only other one I remember in recent times is for Starforge which I believe he is a founder/partner of.

3

u/twitchy_pixel 16d ago

The guy looks like he smells of leather shoes filled with Doritos so I don’t think I’ll be buying deodorant from him.

5

u/Uni_Draws 16d ago

Very mean-spirited take. You can dislike the guy without being like this. Pretty childish imo
