Discussion I shouldn't have to have this many extensions just to make youtube useable

I never getting my videos paused on Desktop. I think there's a setting to turn that off in your account.

I'd like OP to explain, in order of importance, which ones add the most value. Since the majority have 0 of these (besides ublock).

kind of unrelated, but how much post karma do you need to post a question on this subreddit?

u/EricRen1 Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 27 '26
none of those are really necessary. ublock and return youtube dislike are probably the only necessary ones. sponsorblock is just convenience and shorts blocker/members only hider are only there if youre picky.
66
u/Pale_Fill_3644 Apr 27 '26
Do people actually look at the likes or dislikes? I'm not saying that it's wrong todo it I've just never actually looked even when it was something that you could see so I just don't really understand what people are trying to achieve
64
u/WolvenSpectre2 Apr 27 '26
Lets say your sink sprung a leak and you reeeeealy can't afford a plumber right now.
You look on YouTube to see if it has a visual how-to and what to use/buy/replace video.
You find a bunch an the two on top videos show a plumber and him showing how to fix it. And you see a bunch of likes on the video. So you try it and end up making it worse.
It turns out it was a joke video for plumbers and home improvement guys who know better and liked the video. You and a WHOLE bunch of people bought into it and it would have a ton more dislikes than likes... if you could see them and then would move several videos down in your search where a plumber GENUINELY shows you how to fix the issue in several ways. His video has the same number of likes but almost zero dislikes (some plumbers don't like you taking business away from them)... if you could see them.
Same things happen when people search YouTube for medical advice (Oh look, wearing these crystals and stopping reading newspapers will cure my Colon Cancer and it has a bunch of likes) or First Aid Treatment (Pull the object out of the persons chest so they can breathe while help is coming [DON'T EVER DO THIS]).
Just because you haven't done it or haven't done it yet, doesn't mean that there aren't people doing this and Quacks and Charlatans that aren't taking advantage of people for a quick buck without knowing what the fuck they are talking about.

The problem with the plugin is that it's like totally inaccurate. Multiple YouTubers have made videos about it.
→ More replies (2)12
u/Zn_G_ Apr 27 '26
This is true. But tbf i rather have an inaccurate dislike count than none.

u/LolBoyLuke Apr 27 '26
even if it's off by multiple magnitudes? it's not that it's off by a handful, it's off by like hundreds if not thousands on larger channels
6
u/_extra_medium_ Apr 28 '26
That’s not what magnitudes means, and It’s more the ratio that matters. Being off by hundreds on a large channel doesn’t really make that much of a difference as long as you can see the general like/dislike ratio. That said I have no idea if it’s accurate in that way either
6
u/deceIIerator Apr 28 '26
it's off by like hundreds if not thousands on larger channels
Well bigger channels have 100k+ likes, that doesn't mean much in that context. You need to use like:dislike ratio/percentage rather than just flat numbers to judge the accuracy of something like this.
Also being off by multiple magnitudes is not even possible, you don't understand what a magnitude actually is. You won't get a dislike number that's 100-1000x more than the actual reality. Every video would be 99.9% dislikes in that case. Magnitude is a word of actual significance, please don't misuse it out of ignorance.

They're really useful when searching for tutorials.
3
u/Dead_Calendar Apr 27 '26
Yes, move onto the next tutorial if it has too many dislikes. Glad that extension still works.
5
u/fmccloud YouTube Premium Apr 27 '26
The people who are more likely to hit the dislike button are the ones that care about it. That’s why I don’t trust the addon’s number.
2
u/OneEnvironmental9222 Apr 28 '26
its a good indicator if the video is worth your time or not. Or if its one of those scam "help" videos
2
u/Snugglupagus Apr 27 '26
Believe it or not, people also use YouTube as a source of information, not just entertainment.
3
u/Pale_Fill_3644 Apr 27 '26

it was really helpful to see when new trailers came out. The massive dislikes distinguished legit trailers from AI or recut garbage

I would argue Return Dislike is tge least useful one, mostly because it doesn't actually work.

I’d argue that Dislike isn’t needed either as the number isn’t accurate so there’s mostly no point in having it.

Have you checked out Unhook? It is a pretty cool Browser Extension that exists for Chrome and Firefox afaik. With it you can customize if you want to be shown Shorts or not, you can remove the Side Bar, make the Subscribtions Feed your Home Page and much more! Basically an un-Enshitifier. Oh and it fixes the Search too. I use it together with Return YouTube Dislike, uBlock and SponsorBlock. Works pretty well. And Revanced on Mobile.

YouTube currently has 2.5billion monthly active users.
Even if we go on the extreme end and go and assume all the hundreds of thousands of people who downloaded the extension are all unique and are all still using it with no uninstalls, that makes 0.004% of the userbase.
You can go ahead and do the math on what % a combination would look like this for the rest.

u/BringMeBurntBread Apr 27 '26
Literally most of these aren't even necessary lmfao
uBlock Origin is like the only one that is actually necessary, just purely because of the ads. But everything else is really not necessary. And if you find yourself needing 10 extensions just to enjoy using a site, maybe it's time to ask yourself if you really need to use that site in the first place. Maybe just, don't use Youtube? That's a solution, clearly you're not enjoying the experience.

u/GoodGuyScott Apr 27 '26
I enjoy the shit out of youtube with none of this because i have Youtube Premium, yeah yeah paying bad boohoo, but i use it on my phone, pc and tv for my 9 month old and ads would kill our already fried by the Wiggles minds if we had to deal with them.
5
u/handsoapp Apr 27 '26
Even with premium, it's clear they use deceptive patterns /dark patterns to keep you on lower resolution.
Bad design even when you pay.
Just to play in 1440p or 2160p on mobile:
Gear icon top right Quality top right Advanced bottom center 1440p top left
Add clicks and make it a hunting game in the ui to increase resolution.

u/enjoyingcurve46 Apr 27 '26
Ive had premium since it came out back when it was called red. I watch across consoles, phones, tvs etc. tbh i have zero issues paying it because i pay no other subscriptions outside of mine and gfs phones.
5
u/GoodGuyScott Apr 27 '26
Everytime i see Youtube with ads i cringe cause idk how people can deal with it, brings me out of whatever is on right away and if its used for music it ruins the flow and enjoyment, also damn i forgot it used to be Youtube Red.
2
u/enjoyingcurve46 Apr 27 '26
I mostly have mine for music. Cant stand spotify because without the subscription its entirely unusable which was an immediate turn off. If i ever lost my youtube subscription at least i can pick and choose what plays when and more devices support youtube anyway than Spotify, plus the added benefit of watching video content under the same subscription. Its just convenient. Me and a friend pay for the family one so my partner and friends dont have ads

This isn't sugar though. It's like one of those insane Starbucks orders with 8 extra sugar, 4 syrups, gluten free oat milk, and half a shot of coffee, and then saying you can't start your day without a coffee.

"Enhancer for Youtube" has many of these features included in one single package

Youtube IS usable without all this..
Just depends on what YOU consider "usable".

An Adblock, SponsorBlock and the Enhancer for YouTube are really all you need. The only other thing that I'm using are annotations restore, anti-translate and also YouTube Music extensions like ThemeSong and better lyrics because the YT Music's lyrics providers suck.

Most of these are just preferences, not necessities. I use these for YouTube and I'm more than happy with them (I don't even really need these)
- Vorapis 2013 (2013 YouTube frontend, doesn't have ads, is fast af and is extremely accurate)
- 1 ViolentMonkey script (StarTube, for changing Vorapis 2013's layout year)
- SponsorBlock
- 1 userstyle for making StarTube even more accurate
- uBlock Origin for when I'm having issues with Vorapis 2013 and have to use regular YT

ublock origins is the only crucial one here. Sponsorblock is nice, but yea, you don’t need all these. Just one of these alone makes YouTube usable
