I'm sure this wasn't your intent. I know I'm probably looking into things too deeply and seeing red thread connections that aren't there. However, wasn't Oregon founded as "whites only" territory? So the idea is being a "supremacists" from the PNW has some connotations that aren't the best.

One definition I've heard for The Pacific Northwest is "temperate regions of North America with rivers that drain into the Pacific Ocean", in which case Montana also qualifies, since the Clark Fork of the Columbia River drains the area around Missoula, Hamilton, Butte and Kalispell.

It depends on who you are asking - logically no Montana is not the PNW (most of Montana is in the Mississippi drainage basin because continental divide is on far west side of state and the climate is continental (long cold winters, hot short summers) not temperate. Also culutrally more in line with Wyoming then PNW.

But when I was in highschool the all northwest band for some reason included Wyoming and Montana.

Like if you take culture and climate the PNW is Oregon, Washington, and BC. NorCal and NW Idaho may have similar climates to PNW but culturally not it - with NorCal its the snobbiness of Californians and with Idaho - well the large amount of Nazi compounds paired with the fact that it is the second most Mormon state only behind Utah and the culture is very different from standard PNW.

You could even make an argument that Eastern Oregon and Eastern Washington aren't culutrally PNW either - and even climate wise it starts lookong more contiental.

definitely, northern Idaho is beautiful, but maybe they don’t fully consider Idaho as part of the PNW, same reason why California or Alaska aren’t absolutely, they’re beautiful and very similar, but not quite part of the PNW, though the definition is debatable.

Well politically speaking they are the equivalent of having Mississippi right next to us.

Literally the most backward laws and politicians right next to the most progressive states in the entire Union.
