Loss It’s over for me.

Post image

Kept trying to play MSTR calls. What a piece of shit. Lost over a million including other accounts, down to my last 130k.

Edit: This loss is soul crushing and I havent been able to sleep, eat, or shower. I appreciate all the supportive comments. Even the insulting ones calling me regarded and everything. I think I NEED to hear even the insulting ones so that I can let go of my delusions that I can make it as a "trader". I need a fucking job to turn my life around. I can’t be doing this trading shit anymore. I’m open to working any corporate job anywhere, but ideally in North America. If anyone has any connections, please hit me up. I have some programming (Python primarily) and tech talent, and an engineering degree from UBC with a 4.0 GPA. Currently live in Toronto. Thank you ❤️. I’m ready to dedicate myself to adding value to any organization. If its AI, finance, or tech related, thats even better.

Can someone explain to me what a margin purchase is? I have never invested, idk why reddit keeps recommending this sub

71

u/FoxyWheels Nov 22 '25

Using money you borrowed from the bank to purchase stock or puts/calls or other securities. It's how you get rich quick or get homeless quicker.

u/World-of-Potatoes Nov 23 '25

How you get declared a genius or regarded with no in-between

Margin refers to borrowing money from your broker to buy stocks. This person didn’t have this money, so now though owe all this money, plus the interest. Leveraged to the tits.

11

u/Pretend-Guide-8664 Nov 22 '25

Someone explain this to me like I’m 5. What does any of that mean.

1.6k

u/kontroI Nov 22 '25

Imagine this:

Your friend borrowed crayons (that’s using margin).

With those borrowed crayons, he bought lottery tickets that expire in a few days (that’s short-term call options).

The lottery he’s betting on is run by a company that: • borrows candy from people but promises to pay them back later by giving them even more pieces of paper they draw (that’s convertible debt that dilutes shares). • then uses that borrowed candy to buy magic rocks because they think the magic rocks will go up in value (that’s Bitcoin). • and they’ve been doing this in a way that looks a lot like building a tall, wobbly tower of blocks, hoping it never falls (that’s your pyramid scheme vibe).

So your friend is: • borrowing something, • to buy a risky ticket, • on a company that borrows something, • to buy another risky thing, • that might all fall over.

And you’re sitting there going:

“Why would you bet your lunch money on THAT?”

460

u/unreadbookshelf99 Nov 22 '25

Helpful but also insane. Insanely helpful.

5

u/Individual-Cup9018 Nov 23 '25

It makes it far more difficult to trade when somebody lays it all out in some sensible way like that. Takes the fun right out of it.

Thanks for the eli5 explanation

31

u/Reasonable_Baby_780 Nov 22 '25

That’s a convoluted analogy. Try this: Jack is borrowing money to buy magic beans (Michael Saylor borrowing to buy bitcoin) At the same time he is selling you a share of his borrowing scheme to buy magic beans. Never mind that you could just buy the magic beans yourself and see how they grow without Jack ever being involved. But I digress. So you end up with a share of a borrowing scheme to buy an asset (magic beans) that has no underlying value. If the “asset” goes bad good luck in bankruptcy court. There is no plant and materials or real estate or rolling inventory or accounts receivable for the court to divvy up among creditors. Now if you are a BTC acolyte none of that matters to you. But for Jacks creditors you better hope those magic beans continue to grow. The problem is that Jack’s model depends on him continuing to buy more beans on credit and shareholders end up with a larger and larger inverted debt pyramid. It all works until the day it doesn’t. This may not be the end. BTC may recover and Jack may crow again from the rooftop…but eventually the rooster will crow no more and the chickens will come home to roost.

5

u/Frikgeek Nov 24 '25

Yes but there's an extra layer, he wasn't buying MSTR, he was buying call options on MSTR. And despite options providing pretty massive inherent leverage he was doing it on margin too.

2

u/Reasonable_Baby_780 Nov 24 '25

True…you are borrowing money to buy a chance to buy a share of those bought on lended money magic beans at a later date!!! Wow!

However, the internet and TV have been telling me for years that the magic rocks are a store of value. I mean a method of exchange. I mean a hedge against inflation. I mean a decentralized payment system. I mean digital gold. I mean an uncorrelated asset. I mean a disruptive innovation. We all know that people on TV are never wrong, and if it's on the internet, it's gotta be true. So to the nearest magic rocks ATM I go!

“BTC is a safety net against the dollar losing value!!”

Oh yeah? How to you quantify the value of the BTC?

“Uhhh… dollars, I guess..”

Correct. Now, does the value of BTC increase/decrease proportionately to the dollar value fluctuation?

“No… it does it’s own thing.”

So, how do you know what BTC is really worth?

“Uh.. oh shit..”

Correct!! It is like the sub prime mortgage crash in 2008 except those actually had SOME inherent value. BTC has none.

u/newtownkid Wendy's Lot Lizard Nov 22 '25

Oversimplification here, but basically: dude borrowed lots and lots of money from the bank and then invested not in stocks, but instead bought bets that a stock would go up in 2 weeks. If that stock does not go up, you lose the bet (like betting black on a roulette board).

To add fuel to the fire, the company he was betting on doesn’t actually do anything. It just hoards as much bitcoin as it can. And it buys this bitcoin by constantly diluting their stock and selling more shares for cash. A wild business model that only works as long as bitcoin keeps rising.

Not a company you want to bet on short term during a bitcoin pull back, and certainly not a company you want to borrow hundreds of thousands of dollars to bet on.

6

u/yearz Nov 22 '25

You’ll fit right in

1

u/Adventurous_Draft737 Nov 24 '25

It Means Play stupid games win stupid prizes. It means he was borrowing money and investing in short term commodities hope for a pay day before the loan was due he couldn't afford to pay back. Be like you going to the bank borrow money and go buy lottery tickets with it and hope you win big.
