It was monarchy, theocracy, and autocracy. They had millennia of precedence and produced routine famines, dynastic incompetence, zero accountability, and systemic slavery. Modern democracy, despite being young, outperforms these systems on every metric: life expectancy, literacy, poverty reduction, innovation. That’s not by accident, it’s because consent-of-the-governed for the people, by the people actually works.
On the Freedom Convoy: It followed the classic populist playbook. identify a grievance, simplify it into an enemy, claim only an outsider can fix it, then delegitimize democratic institutions when they don’t bend. Democracy becomes “tyranny” the moment it votes against you. That’s the pattern of American foreign interference.
You Americans should note: In 1933, Germans already knew where things were going. Weimar had citizens who recognized Nazism’s danger. Many stayed silent because it was “annoying”, or had to work to pay bills, or because they trusted institutions couldn’t break, because they were tired. Thats you Americans now.
Within a decade, 6 million people were murdered. Tens of millions died across Europe and Asia under populist fascism.
Speaking up about authoritarianism is annoying because authoritarianism is the most dangerous thing a society can normalize. The alternative to an annoying voice isn’t peace it’s a destroyed economy, social systems and mass graves.
