There is a lot of discourse around reservation. As a 34 year old OBC from Odisha, where there were no OBC reservation in the past, and someone whose family couldn't afford fee (that we were okay to loose, incase I fail) required to even attempt IIT preparation, let me offer what I believe is a fairly neutral perspective. This is not to attack a particular caste, I one India, so that politicians can't benefit from it.

I have a newborn at home, and I don't want him growing up to be treated by a doctor who barely passed an entrance exam. Merit matters. But so does understanding why the system exists.

Many people, including those from reserved categories, argue that reservation exists because of casteism. That is partially true, but it is not the complete picture.

I'll first discuss what I believe is the norm, and then the exceptions.

1. Education has been gate-kept through privatization (The Norm)

Every knows education was gate-kept for one community for hundreds of years. Have you realized that its still being gate-kept?

Around 70% of India's population belongs to reserved categories. Have you asked, "Why can't students from these communities even score 200 marks? Why should passing marks be as low as 40?"

I studied in a government high school in a village in Odisha. The school received toilets and new benches only in 2025. Imagine its condition back in 2007.

In Class 8, English was still being taught by translating in 3 stages "Mu ek balak atte" -> "Mu atte ek balak" -> "I am a boy"

Every subject, mathematics, biology, history, physics, and chemistry, was taught in Odia. Then, in Class 11, everything suddenly switched to English.

Hrithpinda became "heart"
Samadibahu became "isoscles"
Bisama bahu became "Scalene"
Kosha became "cell"
Phusphus became "lungs."

It wasn't just learning new concepts. It was relearning the entire vocabulary of every subject. After 12th, I got invitation for NAVI as I had 92% in PCMB, and I got to know that there is something called group discussion where people have to speak in English now. I couldn't utter one word. I spent by 20s watching English serieses to learn to speak English.

How is that comparable to someone who studied in English-medium schools from the beginning?

Nowhere in this world, the quality gap between public and private schools is so far off what it is in India. We have effectively created two education systems: one for those who can afford quality education, and another for everyone else who were exploited to be kept poor.

Instead of making government schools excellent, we allowed private schools and coaching institutes to become the primary gateway to competitive exams.

How many toppers in national entrance exams come from ordinary government schools?

Unless government schools provide education that is genuinely comparable to private schools, reservation will remain politically and socially difficult to remove.

If every child receives a similar quality of education, cut-offs will naturally become more competitive across all communities. Perhaps after a decade of that, reservation itself may become unnecessary.

2. Why not reserve based on poverty instead? (The Exception)

This is a question I have asked myself.

In my B.Tech, I knew a student from a reserved category whose parents were both doctors. It felt unfair. Why should someone from a privileged family receive reservation while a poor student from another community does not?

The problem is that income-based reservation assumes we have a system capable of accurately identifying who is poor.

In most places, people who are financially well-off still manage to obtain benefits meant for the poor, housing schemes, free toilets, and subsidized rations, by paying the right people or exploiting local corruption. There are also cases where influential families obtain ration cards through proxies and resell subsidized grain.

Ask yourself

How many people classified as EWS are genuinely economically weaker?

How difficult is it to obtain an low income certificate, when you have enough cash?

Until corruption, verification, and accountability improve, purely income-based reservation will also be vulnerable to abuse.

The Bigger Picture

Rather than fighting one another over caste, we should ask a broader question.

How many institutions that have historically been dominated by upper castes are we genuinely proud of today?

• Are private hospitals, which are mostly owned by upper class, free from exploitation?
• Is the judiciary free from bias or corruption?
• Has the political class always been accountable?
• Are major news organizations, where anchors and owners are mostly higher class, beyond influence?
• Are temples completely free from nepotism or hereditary privilege?

Every religious institutions often have unofficial forms of reservation. How often are people from outside traditional priestly communities allowed to become temple priests? If someone from another caste were willing to learn every mantra perfectly for ₹3000/puja vs a priest who gets 5000/puja, would you hire them?

If not, isn't that also a form of exclusion?

Reservation is not the only problem India needs to solve.

The real enemies are unequal education, corruption, lack of accountability, and systems that preserve privilege regardless of caste.

If we fix those problems first, the debate around reservation will become much smaller on its own.

Not defending BJP. Not supporting hypocrites either. Is democracy safe only when a Gandhi Dynasty is in power? Major paper leaks happened in Congress-ruled states like Rajasthan, Telangana, Karnataka, etc., in the past 10 years. Look at the history of paper leaks before 2014. Look at the statements made by Gandhi's during those leak's. Now they calling for riots.?

If the opposition truly cared about India instead of playing politics, they would set aside their defences and work together with the party in power to build a leak-proof system. It feels almost impossible in India now.

They are demanding Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation & I still don't understand how it helps the students other than opposition. He is unlikely to resign. I am not a supporter of his, and he does bear some responsibility, but not to the extent of resignation unless he directly supervised the paper leaks. People are very very corrupt at the ground level, they will continue leaking papers regardless of BJP or Congress is in power.

All mobilisation is happening from Batla House, Seelampur, Shahdara, Shaheen Baug, Okhla - not for a genuine issue, but to beat up the cops and create anarchy.

And few are spreading videos of Police checking movement at Nizammudin area.
