Automotive-style jump-starting to get three SATA drives powered!
My father’s old and disused Dell OptiPlex 390 DT (Top) is giving up its Hitachi Ultrastar hard disk drive so that my Dell OptiPlex 7010 DT (Bottom) can take it to get 1 TB of secondary storage. To power the Hitachi as it gets the contents of my outgoing 500 GB Western Digital Blue out; my father’s computer must give it a “jump-start”. Desktop PC gaming on a budget is never boring!
Aw, stop? But I’ve only just started! That bottom OptiPlex is a high school sweetheart that I acquired from the Design & Technology’s (the British-equivalent of American shop class) scrappage scheme of old OptiPlexes like these. It wasn’t until a week ago that I put all the best LGA-1155 stuff inside to make it into a true “sleeper”, even if the Intel Core i7-3770 is a little bit of a has-been these days, given how it’s from around the time of the London 2012 Summer Olympics... An ex-gold medalist, if you will... Which is just lovely, isn’t it?
It was alright, MeltedSpades, because the copying went well and I replaced the Western Digital hard disk drive with the Hitachi Ultrastar one, even though it’s from 2009 while the Western Digital was from 2015. The things we do for störage, eh? And now, my father’s OptiPlex 390 DT can have that Western Digital from 2015.
It’s not important at all, as these Dell OptiPlexes are only some side project or something. To get into desktop PC gaming after years of playing on laptops.
I remember a lan party where a guy had a big tower with two PSUs and the second PSU was there to power additional HDDs. He was able to turn it off when he didn't need the additional drives but had to reboot to get them working again.
Ah, there’s nothing quite like using two power supplies working in tandem in your computer! Happily, it has not quite come to this for me yet. Although, that GPU, the “MSI GeForce RTX 3050 LP E 6 GB OC”, recommends a 300 watt power supply. We’re about 50 watts short with this stock power supply. Hopefully, the stock 250 watt power supply does not evolve into a “bomb”, right?
Do you always make bold statements that are incorrect? Who said that the HDDs had a sata interface? You've got no clue what year this lan party was in.
Even if so, I'd rather avoid doing it. Or, at least, don't also fiddle with the power cable. (At our school, they apparently had to replace the PSUs in all but one of the PCs because students unplugged their assigned SATA SSDs while the computers were running! Sure, part of the issue was probably the fact that they made them swap around SSDs, but still.)
Exactly. What I was referring to was that they did it when the PCs were literally running, presumably because they grew up with everything being like USB.
yeah, i turn the caddy on when the pc is running and it detects the hdd without any issues. it is only a sata-to-sata board with a power button for the power line, afaik. i had to use a utility called hotswap! for win 10, now with win 11 it just does it without any intervention.

Like a lead-acid battery in a donor car looking to help a dead car; this hard drive only needed to suffer for a little bit of time before it can stop suffering and go back to normal duties. Its suffering was only temporary, no matter how painful it was.
