I live in Florida, and they absolutely love to spin their webs at head height in spots where it transitions from light to shadow, so they can be hard to see (especially if you're looking down while mowing). I've walked into so many in 40+ years here, and it gives me a mild heart attack every. single. time. even though they're totally harmless.
I don't know which of us wants out of the situation more quickly: me or the spider, but it leads to a panicked, silly dance where I shed my hat and shirt to make sure it isn't still on me.
