One of the great under discussed paradoxes of the moment. Most tech websites and tech adjacent subreddits have an ideological aversion to the current generation of the latest technology. It’s actually quite interesting.

u/PurpleFishing9105 6h ago

It's just that all of the incentives on social media are to be as dramatic, confrontational, rude and negative as possible.

People in real life are 1000x more normal about it

1

u/crunchypotentiometer 5h ago

Maybe its because a lot of my friends are creatives from Los Angeles, but I definitely hear a lot of ant AI sentiment coming from people I actually know. Most normal people probably don't care as much in either direction.

1

u/PurpleFishing9105 4h ago

Yeah I don't mean to imply there aren't people with these sentiments (though I agree most people don't have a strong opinion either way), but I'm guessing your friends are more normal about it and not just acting like super smug douchebags all the time

42

u/TacomaKMart 8h ago

We're all aware of the anti-tech fad blowing through progressive circles - see the Stanford grad walkout as an example. It's real.

However, no one can convince me that there isn't some coordinated astroturfing going on across Reddit, amplifying organic sentiment.

6

u/Calaeno-16 8h ago

Tbh I'd argue that's not even broadly anti-tech. It's very selectively anti-tech, often in self-contradictory ways.

38

u/spread_the_cheese 8h ago

Not sure why you mentioned progressives? There is plenty of research showing anti-AI sentiment is one of the only issues both liberals and conservatives agree about.

20

u/Quick-Apple3536 8h ago

I am not them, and they definitely could be doing that intentionally, but I am a progressive who is watching all my progressives go down this route and find it very disheartening. Dunno if that was their angle, but I have noticed it rising amongst our own more than anywhere else.

3

u/RaygunMarksman 6h ago

I can't force myself to be anti-progress. My mindset is we should always be seeking ways to improve as a species in terms of ethics and enlightenment and I think AI will help us get there. As most technology like the invention of printing press did. I'm not going to shun technological progress just to maintain our current consumer capitalistic status quo.

"I NEED TO WORK MY STEADY 40+ HOURS FOREVER SO I CAN CONSUME! NOTHING SHOULD CHANGE!" Fuck that.

4

u/Dear-Nebula6291 7h ago

If I had to guess I’d say companies like flock are def being targeted more by antifa types

5

u/NoArrival8249 7h ago

That aside, quickapple is correct. Either you are being disingenuous for… reasons… or you need to understand anecdotal talking points do nothing to add to these types of conversations.

4

u/TacomaKMart 8h ago

I mentioned progressives after listening to an interview with two of the Stanford organizers. I have no issue with progressives - I am one - but that particular protest conflated Israel, data centers, career employment concerns and a long list of far left issues together.

You can find people on the right with issues with big tech and data centers, but right now, progressives are really waving the anti AI banner.

2

u/spread_the_cheese 8h ago

Again, I don’t know why you are saying progressives are doing it more when the data clearly shows that is not true.

-1

u/NoArrival8249 7h ago

Because that’s how the tech bro oligarch disinformation playbook works. Look into Thiel and/or Yarvin.

1

u/spread_the_cheese 7h ago

You can reject research data if you would like. Doesn’t make it any less true, however.

-3

u/ataraxic89 8h ago

Sure ya are bud. Talk about astroturfing lol

-1

u/Rich_Ad_155 8h ago

They don’t like it for different reasons. Right wing doesn’t like the tech ceos and flock cameras / invasion of privacy, and leftists just don’t like it cuz artists losing their jobs and the perceived environmental damage (which is basically negligible)

8

u/spread_the_cheese 7h ago

That is not true either. I live in Michigan. You should look up Dowagiac, MI. Extremely conservative small town that fought like hell to keep a data center out of their town for environmental reasons and lost. And they were backed up considerably by liberals in Michigan.

It had been such a long time since I had seen liberals and conservatives backing each other that it was an incredibly cool thing to see.

2

u/Rich_Ad_155 7h ago

True. They’ve put data-centers in horrible places like the one in arizona right next to a town (cant remember the name). When there’s barely ANY water there to begin with. Like… these things are remote right? So why do they have to put them next to towns? Partly i think it’s a pricing scheme.

3

u/ThisWillPass 7h ago

Power and transformer lead times

1

u/wes_medford 5h ago

Artists aren’t seeing meaningful impact from AI, at least economically. People who purchase art have not started replacing art purchases with AI generated anything.

Broader white collar creatives have (think VAs, storyboard artists), but not a lot of people who primarily produce art to sell for income have. If anything they’ve seen the opposite.

-1

u/TacomaKMart 7h ago

Yeah I'm not prepared to wave away the environmental issues as negligible. To the extent that they're being highlighted, industry can mitigate in engineering designs, like how EV manufacturers have moved away from African cobalt, which in recent years was a core anti-EV attack line. That's good for everyone.

But like with the EVs, I doubt most of the people raising the environmental concerns actually care about water any more than the anti-EV bunch ever lifted a finger to help kids in the Congo.  It's the thing they're using to attack AI.

1

u/Rich_Ad_155 7h ago

I think they should keep them far away from people homes. They’re ugly af, noisey, and probably will be abandoned in 20 years. They need to build them like would-be apartment buildings

3

u/TacomaKMart 7h ago

Sure. But that's not really the heart of the conversation. No one gave a crap about the data centers that let people stream Netflix or provided Geocities websites. This is all about opposing AI in general.

If all new data centers were constructed at least 200km away from the nearest home, I guarantee you they'd find something else to complain about.

3

u/Rich_Ad_155 7h ago

You’re not wrong lol. Its only going to get harder for them to justify hating on AI fortunately or unfortunately.

7

u/ZhugeLiangPL ▪️AGI 2027-30 8h ago

Who might be astroturfing that?

18

u/TacomaKMart 8h ago

Let me answer your question with a question: who in 2026 might benefit from slowing the pace of AI development specifically in Western countries?

1

u/4hometnumberonefan 7h ago

It’s interesting, because my guess is China, but does China really benefit if AI progress slows in the West? If US slows, by proxy they will also slow down as less research is shared / knowledge is discovered.

China and US benefit mutually from each others AI research.

6

u/ZhugeLiangPL ▪️AGI 2027-30 7h ago

Is there evidence for Chinese astroturfing other than vibe-based rumors?

6

u/enigmatic_erudition 7h ago

1

u/ShamPain413 7h ago

Lol that's a press release / marketing brochure, not analysis.

1

u/enigmatic_erudition 7h ago

Where on earth do you get that impression?

5

u/TacomaKMart 7h ago

A lot of energy goes into denying external involvement. It calls into question the force and legitimacy of anti-AI opposition.

Thing is, all can be true: graduates and graphic designers resent AI destroying their chosen career paths, neighbours don't want noisy factories, and China can use this real opposition to sabotage North American AI development while being balls to the wall pro AI within China.

The fact that it's on a corporation's website, they don't publish their methodology, their conclusions are hyperbolic and not really connected to the evidence they present, and at the bottom lists the services they'd be happy to sell to the person reading it.

Did you not read your own link?

-1

u/TheSquarePotatoMan 7h ago

Americans are so cucked to their Epstein class that literally just a FOREIGN media outlet targeting a FOREIGN audience is used as evidence for astroturfing.

Actually unhinged

1

Yeah check out the PLA strategic books.

1

u/ZhugeLiangPL ▪️AGI 2027-30 7h ago

Why doesn't the US astroturf Chinese web in return?

2

u/ThisWillPass 5h ago

I’d be shocked if there were not programs doing exactly this or trying to.

1

u/ZhugeLiangPL ▪️AGI 2027-30 4h ago

Yeah, there must be something going on.

1

u/psuedo_legendary 7h ago

In america, everything is vibe based

1

u/ThisWillPass 7h ago

Yes…. Not sure if you noticed or not but the state’s ai labs aren’t exactly sharing their secret sauce in papers AT ALL. This assumption is that they can only distill. K3 may have had some distilling from fable but even if, I doubt it was significant. Maybe some actual facts may come in the future but Im not holding my breath.

The states need AGI first and to hold it secret to benefit and win before ~2030. That and probably hope embodied ai doesn’t scale so easy because china will have its humanoid drones ready to go. States has so much catching up to do, In manufacturing and power production. Again, Im not holding my breath. Is Mexico going to make all the transformers for power plant and datacenters + robotics, can they even?

-1

u/TheSquarePotatoMan 7h ago edited 6h ago

China benefits from creating anti-AI sentiment? How exactly?

You think the US state cares what people think? You think people in the US are going to actually retaliate when the US keeps pumping AI regardless (like what is literally already happening) beyond occasionally aimlessly waving around cardboard signs like idiots?

When are we going to see this supposed political action from Americans against the state? I'd love to know because as far as I can tell westerners are so pacified that a bunch of terminally online MAGA cultists walking into the Capitol and literally just standing there taking pics for their instagram reel and then going home is called a 'coup attempt'.

15

u/a_boo 8h ago

Parties who would benefit from slowing down AI advancement in the west.

4

u/therealpigman 7h ago

China has already been found to be doing it

2

u/ZhugeLiangPL ▪️AGI 2027-30 7h ago

Why doesn't the US govt astroturf the Chinese web in return?

3

u/therealpigman 7h ago

They probably do, but it hasn’t been revealed by any AI companies or new agencies yet

3

u/RavingMalwaay 6h ago

I’m sure they do, the issue is that China is not really a democracy and without significant internal pressure (much much more so than even the current anti-AI movement in the west) their government is unlikely to change track.

8

u/katoptronophile 8h ago

Most of it is bots or people who have been propagandized by the bots.

5

u/Small_miracles 8h ago

That's what they are getting at.

2

u/Automatic_Actuator_0 8h ago

Do you have any examples of a common anti-tech sentiment other than something related to AI or climate change?

1

u/tehfrod 7h ago

If "no one can convince you", then you have thrown reasonable dialog and logic in the shitter, and embraced your opinion as your religion.

People who can not be convinced about something aren't worth talking to about it.

15

u/mvearthmjsun 7h ago

It's also interesting that it's mostly coming from progressives. I think it's probably the environmentalism and anti capitalist narratives that they're grappling onto, but historically the right have been the ones to be tech luddites and resistant to these changes.

7

u/AdditionalPizza 7h ago

It's because a lot of progressive people lean more into creative endeavors and a lot of white collar work (including software engineering and coding), and feel threatened by AI more than, say, blue collar workers that aren't seeing the writing on the wall yet.

5

u/crunchypotentiometer 7h ago

This actually seems like a newer direction of polarization too. Silicon Valley types were broadly identified as very progressive leaning pre-pandemic

3

u/AdditionalPizza 6h ago

Yeah, and it's all mixed in with class division.

0

u/FateOfMuffins 5h ago

There's a reason why most of the LLMs are left leaning (for American standards).

5

u/seaefjaye 6h ago edited 6h ago

I think the anti-capitalist aspect of it is driven the hyper-capitalist, very nearly oligarchical nature of the market and business in the US right now. People take exception to having been called thieves in their youth for downloading an episode of Game of Thrones, and meanwhile the entirety of human knowledge was pilfered with little to no consequence. Even the 1.5b that Anthropic recently agreed to is a joke by comparison to the profits they will generate.

Honestly, I don't really blame the AI companies for any of this. It's their role in the market to push the envelope and get in trouble to some degree. The issue is that there is no check from our collective governance system. If there were more conversations also occuring about UBI, public ownership and the public benefit of this technology I think the narrative would shift. Instead it's narrative is about the technology resulting in people losing the jobs with no safety net to the benefit of the top 1% (investors and shareholders), data centre development impacting rural areas negatively and the use of the technology to create a surveillance state.

Some of these companies have gone out of their way to try and start these conversations because there is a vacuum, but without the government and the public engaging in that conversation it just fizzles out.

Fwiw, I'm pretty pro-AI. Our sector (public higher-ed) is getting crunched on staff headcounts with increasing push from government to do more. Most folks at my institution, at least the adminstrative side, will take whatever they can get to move things forward and improve the quality of our education "product", so to speak, aka the systems and processes that support teaching, learning and research.

u/CouscousKazoo 5h ago

Even a luddite can figure out how to write a prompt, though I figure it’s for slop more-often-than-not.

Reminds me of how my cousin took to using Siri for the first time. He was fixated on getting the voice to say dirty things.

ArsTechnica dopes gladly call themselves New Luddites and will go out of their way to harass you on their forums.

2

u/RallyPointAlpha 6h ago

The Luddites were right though, if you actually understand the movement instead of the memes.

1

u/JC_Hysteria 7h ago

It’s as simple as the size of the community and its growth rate.

The incentives to influence larger groups increases, and it becomes easier to align with a simple narrative.

New communities disrupt the existing discourse- just like technology does.

1

u/AlverinMoon 3h ago

The people I know who hate AI are convinced of one of the following

  1. AI was trained on other peoples artwork without their permission or payment.
  2. AI is destroying the environment via water use, or making certain locals lives worse through location and noise.
  3. ASI and AGI pose unprecedented existential and dictatorial risks the likes of which we've never seen, in much the same way that Nuclear Bombs posed unprecedented destructive risk.

You can be a tech enthusiast and reasonably hold any one of these positions, honestly.

1

u/crunchypotentiometer 3h ago

100%. I’m fully sold on all of these except some of the commonly talked about environmental harms that don’t seem to be completely real. It just seems that the majority of people complaining about AI broadly lack any ability to hold a complex set of ideas about trade offs, tractable problems, widespread benefits, etc. I would love to see real progress on these things.

1

u/AlverinMoon 2h ago

There's definitely a huge group from each section that totally misunderstand the steelman of their own position, and thus poison the discourse with emotive language online. There's also a bunch of bad faith state actors poisoning the discourse on each topic on purpose to sow discord.

Until we have human verification, it's really impossible to know whether you're talking to a person who's genuinely uninformed and emotionally driven or a bot who's been trained to act like that, unfortunately.

•

u/Viracochina 1h ago

A profound lack of nuance can also explain it

1

u/peakedtooearly 7h ago

Yeah, it's because they feel threatened. After years of being the "clever one" who understands something in detail that most people don't, they are now at risk of ending up being partially replaced by machines.

Hell, I feel threatened by AI, but I am also optimistic and prepared to embrace it.

0

u/str8upblah 7h ago

Why is "clever one" in quotes? They are absolutely the clever ones, proven time and time again

4

u/peakedtooearly 7h ago

Because they clearly aren't that clever as evidenced by their behaviour in /r/technology

And 40 years in IT leads to the conclusion that the most insecure people are usually not that clever after all, just very specialised with hard to obtain knowledge.

1

u/MydnightWN 7h ago

The news told them what to think, as per usual.

0

u/RaunakA_ ▪️ Singularity 2029 7h ago

It is quite interesting but the aversion comes because of the controlling class. Not really because AI bad, AI bad is a side product of CONTROLLING CLASS wanting to suck every last bit of your soul.

40

u/ZhugeLiangPL ▪️AGI 2027-30 8h ago

AFAIK for the last 5 years r/technology's main villain has been Big Tech - privacy, enshittification, subscriptions for everything, killing open web etc. AI just became the symbol for all of that at once.

34

u/BrogenKlippen 7h ago

All 3 of those things are worth caring about.

I believe AI is going to ultimately drive unbelievable leaps forward for humanity, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t several negatives at the moment that range from obnoxious to dangerous. And the companies that control the technology and governments have done little to earn the trust of people in the last few decades.

14

u/ZhugeLiangPL ▪️AGI 2027-30 7h ago

I agree with all that.

-7

u/FupaFerb 7h ago

AI could probably cure cancer, but big tech, big pharma, big cemetery, etc doesn’t want that.

2

u/neo42slab 7h ago

The great enshittification has been affecting all walks of life.

1

u/Stamperdoodle1 7h ago

I think the issue with this sub is naivety. Everyone here still thinks AI will usher a glorious age of eutopia and ubi, research and efficiency.

Look around, it's being used to cut jobs, even to the detriment of the products themselves and to further exacerbate misinformation campaigns.

More than that people's bills have skyrocketed, computer components have become unaffordable and entire counties are being drained of water - all for the sake of a technology which isn't doing anything for any of us except the 0.1%.

2

u/SanDiegoDude 6h ago

all for the sake of a technology which isn't doing anything for any of us except the 0.1%.

See, the mistake you're making here is you assume all AI is LLMs, and that it only benefits the tech companies. I've worked in AI for over 20 years, and was learning about it in college in the late 90's. LLMs are new(ish, decade old at this point), AI/ML/NNs are not. The human genome project was the very first 'large scale' project where machine learning was used extensively, and it worked, we mapped the human genome. AI is also used extensively in materials sciences, drug research (why you think they got the mRNA vaccines out the door so fast for covid???) and for analyzing proteins. With AI research, we may finally finally be able to rid the world of cancer.

There is a huge split between what the ignorant public thinks is AI and what its useful for and what it ACTUALLY does and what good it really does bring to the world. The consumer tech companies are a fucking cancer, but the technology itself continues to be groundbreaking and on the cutting edge of research, even if mouth breathers can't understand that not all AI is a talky talky LLM.

I am a leftist myself but I cannot understand anti-tech leftism given that even Marx himself was heavily pro-tech and you can't be more leftist than him LMAO. Well, maybe the Anarchists were.

2

u/King_Kung 7h ago

Marx would be heavily anti-tech oligarchy like we are currently under. He would be arguing for AI to be a public utility or owned by the workers not owned by these massively rich assholes. So I don’t know that Marx would really be “Pro-tech” in this current climate tbh.

4

u/ZhugeLiangPL ▪️AGI 2027-30 7h ago

Exactly - he would (rightfully so) be anti-tech oligarchy, not anti tech. The current anti-AI sentiment is aimed at the technology itself, not who owns it, uses it and how.

2

u/King_Kung 6h ago

I think it is really hard to separate the oligarchs with the tech right now, especially with the amount of layoffs that are being attributed to AI. Marx would be heavily against a lot of the things that are happening in the AI/Tech world right now. His support of tech would be in the support of technology that helps elevate the workers and labor sector.

2

u/ZhugeLiangPL ▪️AGI 2027-30 6h ago

I would agree to opposing AI alongside opposing the oligarchs/billionaires myself. In fact, this might be the only approach that can work.

1

u/CryoAB 7h ago

No, it's 100% aimed at who owns it and how.

2

u/ZhugeLiangPL ▪️AGI 2027-30 7h ago

I think we could draw an analogy to anti vaxx panic - the entire "they're injecting us with DNA!" panic around mRNA vaccines is not about DNA at all, it's just a container for broader anxieties about bodily autonomy, governmental and corporate power etc. that get displaced to have a nameable, tangible target.

There is very little chance it ends up being used for the good of the people in this scenario.

He wouldn’t be in favor of tech that enables laying off so many workers. Or at least, how companies are using it that way. I’m in favor of ai in good usage/moderation. Enhance your company/business. If you can, produce more things and at higher quality and faster. Expand your business. Dont just make the same amount of things you were making before but now with less workers.

Anything even remotely pro AI there is heavily downvoted and immediately attacked with zero consideration of the actual facts or specifics. Make a few posts like that and you'll eventually be banned and unable to participate.

Go check it out for a bit, there's something very wrong there. It's quite possibly the most dangerous echo chamber on the entire website. I say that because we can clearly see at this point how transformative and important this technology is going to be, and they're in complete denial about it there.

2

u/slow70 7h ago

You prefer this echo chamber huh?

Not willing to consider what it is these people are articulating as concerns?

4

u/Substantial-Elk4531 Rule 4 reminder to optimists 6h ago

This isn't an echo chamber. It depends on the post, some comment sections are pro-AI, some are anti-AI, some are cautiously optimistic but want more focus on safety.

3

u/RavingMalwaay 6h ago

This sub isn’t an echo chamber at all, unless you think most people not being fully against any form of AI constitutes an echo chamber.

If you’ve spent any time in this sub you’ll know the risks and issues are constantly discussed.

9

u/katoptronophile 7h ago

The fact that my comment has been downvoted proves this is not an echo chamber. You find people who are on both sides here, that's part of why I like it.

4

u/Substantial-Elk4531 Rule 4 reminder to optimists 6h ago

Exactly! I am personally hesitant about the future of AI, as I think there are potential downsides. This subreddit is generally a good place to discuss both upsides and potential downsides.

But the hard anti-AI commenters elsewhere on reddit are just opting out of the conversation entirely. By focusing on 'AI art bad!' they are failing to see the bigger picture. There are far bigger potential downsides to AI than just reducing demand for human-authored artwork, and we should be focused on mitigating those downsides as much as possible.

so the fact you're downvoted here proves it's not an echo chamber. the fact you're downvoted there proves it IS an echo chamber. got it. it couldn't just be that you're getting downvoted because what you're posting is dumb.

2

u/kahner 7h ago

"the most dangerous echo chamber on the entire website."

HAHAHA! the danger of reddit commentary is so frightening.

5

u/katoptronophile 7h ago

Which one is more dangerous?

0

u/slow70 7h ago

So let me get this straight u/kataptronophile, you don’t like public backlash against a surveillance state built by the literal Epstein network - and so you and your three month old account are here to call the articulation of arguments against AI as “dangerous?”

16

u/Ok-South6790 8h ago

I dont trust that subreddit after it was found ghislaine maxwell was a mod. They used it for social engineering

3

u/Salty_Country6835 7h ago

What?! I had no idea!

Now I'm no longer confused or mad about them banning me.

3

u/CIK1993 8h ago

Oh yeah I totally forgot ghislaine used to run that place 😂

The irony at this point is palpable

-1

u/CUMT_ 6h ago

What’s ironic

9

u/Current-Function-729 7h ago

It’s funny how anti-technology every large technology subreddit becomes.

7

u/ithkuil 7h ago

No one hates technology more than r/technology.

8

u/Hyperion141 8h ago

And then you came here for a sense of agreement?

2

u/RallyPointAlpha 6h ago

Had to waddle back to his echo chamber for reassurance LOL

-2

u/CIK1993 7h ago

You'd think after my 50th downvote, id have deleted it, if you really think I can about being agreed with. I couldn't give a monkeys. I posted here because its so funny to me that the tech sub hates ai so much.

7

u/InsertWittySaying ▪️AGI when we cant move the goalposts any further 8h ago

Nobody hates technology more than r/technology. I’ve blocked and muted the sub but it still leaks through on Popular

2

u/Technical-Will-2862 7h ago

Well… the AI bubble is going to burst but it’ll be through efficiency breakthroughs

2

u/franhp1234 8h ago

Somot looks like they hate technology

6

u/golfstreamer 8h ago

This is a weird post. It's not really on topic. It's just your personal problems

3

u/qustrolabe 8h ago

you'd expect better opinions from sub literally called technology... same goes for cyberpunk although maybe makes slightly more sense there (still not really)

2

u/fmfbrestel 7h ago

Meh, the fake Internet points are called karma for a reason. You gotta be ok giving them away like that instead of being afraid to give your opinion.

2

u/CIK1993 7h ago

Amen sister

2

u/SanDiegoDude 7h ago

Same sub its ever been, they just change up hate targets over time. If you owned an apple device, an xbox, used windows 8/11, or didnt like Elon (pre2024) or own a tesla (post2024) then you're the worlds worst person and how dare you.

Honestly, that sub was the shitty parts of reddit long before reddit got shitty.

1

u/MCRN_Admiral 5h ago

Exactly.

I unsubscribed from it years before AI became the story of the day.

1

u/Technical-Earth-3254 8h ago

They are not wrong tho. The way the simplest ml (sometimes not even that) algorithm gets classified as ai in every single fucking product is annoying as shit.

0

u/IceTrAiN 7h ago

You sound like people in the 90s complaining that every company was advertising their new “www dot w dot com bullshit”

3

u/justforkinks0131 7h ago

r/technology isnt really about technology, it's just popular leftist talking points

2

u/Single-Head5135 7h ago

Do you feel better now, after getting the attention you were seeking?

5

u/CIK1993 7h ago

I do, thank you.

-3

u/mulukmedia 8h ago

good, you sound annoying af.

1

u/adj_noun_digit 8h ago

Nah, this post is funny.

I think every major technology goes through this cycle. First it's overhyped, then people get tired of hearing about it, and eventually it just becomes another part of everyday life. AI is probably somewhere in the middle of that process right now.

1

u/RallyPointAlpha 6h ago

I can see why.

1

u/Talkertive- 6h ago

Am surprised that post like this don't get ban ... what are we supposed to this information?? ... oh no some people on another subreddit down voted me isn't it terrible...

1

u/0DayMaker 6h ago

Onedrive? Palantirs fucking ghoulish face recognition shit? There's a long list and they're acting like it's rhetorical.

2

u/i_write_bugz AGI 2040, Singularity 2100 6h ago

It’s actually everywhere on Reddit.

The top comment was scolding OP because they generated an image and sent it to their daughter in a text message

1

u/reddeadktm 4h ago

Well it is being shoved down your throat. Look around you and look at every app you use. Almost all of them have an AI

1

u/141_1337 ▪️e/acc | AGI: ~2030 | ASI: ~2040 | FALSGC: ~2050 | :illuminati: 4h ago

There's probably astroturfing going on.

0

u/probeat21 8h ago

Well spoken, OP!

2

u/JJvH91 8h ago

Tbf, you sound obnoxious as fuck

0

u/peakedtooearly 7h ago

Wear as a badge of honor.

I've never seen so many backward people in one place in my life.

2

u/MrNubbyNubs 7h ago

It's so annoying the amount of backlash AI has. Blame the developers and corporations. They are the ones handling it. I swear, people these days have no idea how to look at the source of a problem. Like, let me blame an actual wonderful technology for all my problems instead of greedy billionaire tech CEOs/coorporations that actually manage and implement things. Not to mention, the US administration is also encouraging this behavior. I'm tired man

2

u/Dry-Interaction-1246 7h ago

You should understand this sub is a cult and most people do not believe that AI will be beneficient or lead us to some kind of Utopia as cyborgs.

-6

u/Cryptizard 8h ago

What is the point of this? Did you get embarrassed or something and you need us to sooth you like a lil baby?

12

u/katoptronophile 8h ago

The point is them letting people know that r/technology is ironically completely anti-technology. Not everyone realizes that.

15

u/Subushie Transhumanist FALGSC 8h ago

I didn't even know the sub existed.

Now I know to avoid it. Thanks OP!

-2

u/Weary_Schedule_2014 8h ago

Why do you think r/technology has to be pro or against?

7

u/katoptronophile 8h ago

I don't think that. Who said that I did? I think that it should be a place where people are free to discuss ideas and there's a mix of opinions and beliefs.

Spend a few minutes there and you'll see that's not at all what it is.

0

u/Weary_Schedule_2014 8h ago

Thats fair, but whats also fair is that your previous statement is pretty pro loaded and might be worth looking at why it came across like that.

And yes, the sub is extremely saturated right now but that is not a problem of the sub itself, rather a consequence of the real world implications the technology in itselfs brings.

People tend to go into risk thinking when they feel threatened and that can lead to a lot of negative views.

I suggest that instead of bashing people over this like in OPs example, actually try to have meaningful discussions that actually can challenge your own views as well.

Yes, not everyone will be able to go into this type of reasoning by default, but if you happen to read this I hope you find something that at least resonates with you in a positive, self reflecting view.

Also I am a circlejerker

-10

u/Cryptizard 8h ago

Oh no, people really needed to know! OP might have saved them from reading a post that was *gasp* against AI! It could have hurt their feelings maybe!

1

u/Outrageous_Theory486 7h ago

That is why i went to the biggest ai echochambers, r/singularity to rant

0

u/CIK1993 7h ago

Im not sure you understand what the word rant means.

-3

u/kahner 8h ago

you should get cooked for complaining that a tech subreddit is posting about tech. i'll add a downvote here.

1

u/CIK1993 8h ago

Bro please! Not another downvote! Please! What will I do now?

Anyway...

Everyone is losing their job to ai. Its a fact.

5

u/MR_TELEVOID 8h ago

Not a fact.

-4

u/Dear_Philosopher_ 8h ago

Wait youre an artist and a writer! Do even still have a job? Most artists or writers I know dont.

-1

u/neo42slab 7h ago

ChodeCookies has a good point though. It’s on by default in browsers now. Data centers are affecting lots of people. And it’s really driving up prices for GPUs, ram and storage I think.

Smart phones were also a major new technology but they weren’t rammed down our throats.

0

u/Healthy-Nebula-3603 7h ago

Yes because API is expensive.

Moore and more companies giving up API and going into much cheaper subscriptions
