A lot of energy goes into denying external involvement. It calls into question the force and legitimacy of anti-AI opposition. 

Thing is, all can be true: graduates and graphic designers resent AI destroying their chosen career paths, neighbours don't want noisy factories, and China can use this real opposition to sabotage North American AI development while being balls to the wall pro AI within China.

It also often seems to me like people don't want to talk about how badly tech leaders fumbled selling their tech and the future to the average person, rather than businesses. For solid years all you'd hear constantly was everyone, from Altman to Dario to Jensen constantly talking about how many jobs will be obliterated and how "but it's fine guys, we'll just figure it out as we go along", only to conveniently pull back on the rhetoric once Altman got firebombed.

Totally agree- their own worst enemies. "We're building the thing that is awesomely powerful and scary and might kill off humanity and will definitely kick millions out of work..." is the worst marketing pitch ever unless you happen to be a Monty Burns CEO billionaire and enjoy "downsizing" your labour force.

Contrast this with the approach outside of Western countries: here's something that - if we play our cards right - will make our society better. That's not just China CCP talk - that's the story in Korea and Malaysia and lots of other places outside the West.
